At the beginning of the First Great War he joined the Harvard University Medical Unit and served overseas for four years. After the war he located in Galt and became known as one of the leading surgeons of the area. He was popular professionally and built up a large practice, but later when he developed a chronic heart condition, he was forced to limit his practice. Apart from his profession, his chief interest was in the realm of sports, both as a supporter and as a part-icipant.
