The House of Industry and Refuge. In 1868, 141 acres was purchased on Frederick Street in Berlin (now Kitchener) and the house opened on June 15, 1869. The original building housed 100 and operated as an industrial farm, which raised crops and livestock. The residents worked for their keep if possible, those most did not. The House eventually became a strictly a residence of the aged and later relocated and renamed Sunnyside.

      ___________________

This writer, traced Susan down to The House of Industry and Refuge, 1887-1947. Susan was admitted in 1899 at the age of 42. The records state she was from Maryborough Township and admitted by her father. She was "weak of mind". she lived there and died there. The building then became the Home for the Aged. There are no stone markers for her grave but an overall large stone marking all those who passed away at this institute. There are no other records I found. There are no death notices in either the Drayton, Elora newspapers. Her shawl is on display at the museum in this building which is now the Wellington County Museum & Archives... 2a
