Elmira - Aaron W. Hoffer of Elmira, who served on town council for 20 years, 14 as reeve, died Sunday at K-W Hospital. He was 85. Mr. Hoffer was reeve of Elmira from 1926 to 1940 and he became warden of Waterloo County in 1933. He was a member of the first Elmira high school board. In 1913 Mr. Hoffer went into the shoe business and by 1917 was the first manufacturer of felt bootees in Canada. The A. W. Hoffer Stork Brand Bootees were still on the market in 1960. The company supplied the T. Eaton Co. with a line of bootees for many years. Mr. Hoffer was born in Floradale, Jan. 4, 1885, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hoffer. His wife, the former Urana Esch, a foster daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Steddick, who he married March 28, 1910, died in 1962. Since 1913, he had been a member of the Elmira board of Trade, and was an honorary member of the board when he retired. He was a member of the board of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and a member of Elmira recreation committee.

When he moved to Elmira in 1913, he bought a home on the southwest corner of Arthur and Water streets where the post office is now located. In 1924 the government chose his corner lot as the site for the post office. The house was moved by horsepower and windlass with the furniture in place and oil lamps left on tables. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Stewart (Lloy) Reichard of Elmira, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) McLaughlin of Belmont, Mrs. Franklin (Trudy) Klink of Elmira, Mrs. Stewart (Vivian) Huehn of Elmira and Mrs. Carl (Jean) Wagner of Beamsville; one son John of Winnipeg, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Two sisters and three brothers predeceased him. The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Wednesday noon, when removal will be made to St. Paul's Church for a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be made in Elmira cemetery. Rev. D. A. Fritz will officiate.1a
