    Notes:

    Mr. Donald Fraser

This well-known resident of Dumfries died on Friday morning last, in his 88th year.

Mr. Fraser was a native of Inverness, Scotland, and emigrated along with his parents of America in the year 1803. The family first settled in New York State, but in 1817 the gentleman of whom we write came to Dumfries, taking up and clearing the land on which he died. In 1818 he married, his wife still surviving him, their married life extending over a period of 66 years. Their family consisted of three sons and two daughters viz.: Mr. Thomas Fraser, Mr. Donald Fraser, one living on the homestead and the other on a farm contiguous; Mr. Jas. Fraser, supposed to have died in St. Louis; Mrs. James Stevenson, living with her husband on the homestead; and Mrs. McIntosh of Brucefield.

Mr. Fraser bore the heat and burden of a pioneer's life well. Scant clearings and widely separated houses threw upon our early settlers duties of hospitality and relief such as residents of these days have little idea of, and foremost in the good work, with open doors to all, were Donald Fraser and his family, and there are many families living n this vicinity and elsewhere in the Province who will long bear in mind the cheerful aid received at his hands.

Mr. Fraser was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of British North America, and was one of the principals in the early steps which led to the formation of a congregation in Galt. He remained a steadfast adherent of that denomination, and it was only a short time since that his infirmities compelled him to relinquish his regular attendance.

His funeral took place on Monday last, and was very largely attended. Rev. Mr. Duff conducted the services, and feelingly referred to the many prominent acts of Mr. Fraser's life, his kindly course to all with whom he had been brought into contact, and his rectitude as a consistent religious man.
