    Notes:

The Late Dr. J.L. Brown - As reported in our last issue of the Independent, James L. Brown, M.D., was drowned while bathing in the river last Thursday. He left his home shortly after dinner for his daily dip in the cool water of the Nith which he greatly enjoyed. His absence from his home occasioned no alarm until about six o'clock when his clothes were found on the river bank and a sad tragedy seemed evident. A large number of people were soon on the scene of the sad fatality, and the body was recovered in the center of the river, just opposite where his clothes were lying, about 8 o'clock in the evening after two hours of searching. The water was very cold in places and it seemed quite evident that he was seized with cramps. An inquest was deemed unnecessary by Corner Dr. Feick. The late Dr. Brown was born near Chesterfield where he spent his boyhood days. After passing his Medical exams he followed his profession in Plattsville for a large number of years. About twelve years ago he retired from his profession and removed to New Hamburg. The late Dr. Brown was an adherent of the Presbyterian faith and a member of the Masonic order. Since coming to New Hamburg he made a host of friends who deeply mourn his sad death. There are left in deep bereavement his sorrowing widow, two daughters, Mrs. (Dr.) R.L. Anderson and Mrs. Jessie Jenkins, of this town, and one son, Dr. Brown, of Winnipeg, Man. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon from his late home to the Chesterfield Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Dale, pastor of the Baptist Church owing to the absence of his pastor, Rev. Johnston of Chesterfield.

    __________________________

BROWN, JAMES LANDSEER is more properly regarded as a Plattsville physician, as he practised there from the time of his graduation from McGill in 1879 until his retirement in 1916. He must have engaged in practice on a limited basis in New Hamburg, as Dr. K. Mathies as a child was treated by him.

On July 11, 1929, while taking his daily swim in the Nith river, he was drowned. He was then 75 years of age. He was survived by his widow, two daughters, and a son, Dr. Brown, of Winnipeg. Dr. R. W. Anderson of New Hamburg, his son-in-law had formerly been associated with him in Plattsville
