    Notes:

Death of a Well-Known Resident of North Dumfries

There passed away suddenly on Saturday morning last, a well-known and respected resident of North Dumfries, Mr. Wm. Abra, sr. Mr. Abra got up apparently quite well on Saturday morning and took a walk out on the farm. Returning after a little while, he complained to his wife that he had fallen down and hurt his shoulder while out. Mrs. Abra got him a drink of water, and as he complained of his head being very hot, she bathed it with cold water. He then said he thought he would like to lay down and Mrs. Abra took him by the arm, and as he seemed feeble one of his daughters took him by the other arm and assisted him. He had scarcely passed into another room before he said he could go no further, and asked them to get him a pillow and he would lie down on the floor there. This was done and he was scarcely laid down before he became insensible, and in the course of a very short time, breathed his last. Medical aid hastily summoned finding the cause of his death to be extravasation of blood in the brain.

Mr. Abra was English by birth, and came from near Swatham, in the County of Norfolk. He was born in 1815 and landed in Canada on the 1st of July, 1842. Making for a location in Upper Canada, he reached the neighborhood of Haysville, where he worked for four years, then marrying Miss Elizabeth Wismer, and the young couple purchased the farm on which they have since resided. Their family consisted of thirteen children, of whom ten are yet living , viz.:- Mrs. B. Wismer, of Waterloo, Miss Hannah, unmarried, Mr. Joseph Abra, farming about a mile north of Roseville, Mr. Moses Abra, farming near the old homestead, Mr. Wm. Abra, carpenter and builder, of Toronto, and Henry, Jacob, Julia, Lizzie and Mamie, the younger members of the family residing on the homestead.

    Notes:

GOODFELLOW - On Friday evening last, a melancholy and fatal accident occurred in our own immediate vicinity to a well known and respected farmer, late of Dumfries, and more recently of Waterloo; viz., Mr. Andrew Goodfellow, a man of about 60 years of age. It appears that Mr. G. with his own team and assisted by several others, as well as Mr. Lamb of Carlisle, had that day been moving his (Mr. G's) nephew from Dumfries on to a farm in Beverly, and on returning home by way of Galt in the evening about the darkening, and when in the neighbourhood of Hunter's Tavern, Mr. Goodfellow slipped from a newly painted box on which he was sitting in the act of driving, and fell headlong into the road, fracturing his skull, and sustaining other severe injuries, causing concussion of the brain. He was immediately lifted into the waggon by his companions and conveyed towards Preston, and although he continued for some time to breathe he was quite insensible and no doubt expired long before the party reached that village. A drink of water was offered him at Groff's Creek, but the poor man was beyond recovery and unable to swallow it, if not actually dead at the time. An inquest was held in Preston and the jury by their foreman, Mr. W. Chapman of Galt, returned a verdict that he died of accidental fall from a waggon. We are sorry to state that evidence was given to show that the deceased was under the influence of liquor at the time and the party were driving rather rapidly, although it was alleged he was capable of taking care of himself. He has left a widow and family to mourn his sudden and deplorable end.
