Thomas Taylor was a millwright born in Dalkeith, Scotland and the great-grandfather of Andrew Winton Taylor. While working in New York state, in 1818, Mr. Taylor was engaged by the Honourable William Dickson to supervise the building of the Dumfries Mill, Galt's first grist mill. The mill opened in 1819 and later that same year, Mr. Taylor purchased Woodside farm on the East River Road on Concession 9 in Dumfries Township. Mr. Taylor returned to Scotland in 1826 where he married Margaret Winton. He returned to North America where he built several mills in upper New York state. In the fall of 1832, he returned to Canada and settled his family at Woodside farm. Mr. Taylor died on August 14, 1845 and was buried in the United Presbyterian Cemetery, now Centennial Park. That cemetery was closed in the 1880's and his remains were removed to Mount View Cemetery. Mr. Taylor's original tombstone can be found in the Pioneer Pergola in St. Andrews Park.
