He was married to Sarah Hembling who was born July 11th, 1797, and died of cholera, at Bridgeport, Ontario, July 8th, 1832. In 1832 they, with their family of six children, together with William Howlett and family and James Howlett and family, emigrated to America, arriving at Hamilton, Ontario, during the third week in June. While at Hamilton they, for several days, resided in a house in which the former residents had died of cholera. Here they contracted this dreadful disease which proved fatal to so many of the small number immediately after their arrival at Mr. Peter Erb's, a little north of Bridgeport, in the evening of the 28th day of June, 1832. They came from Hamilton with Mr. Peter Erb who was there on business. No sooner were they in possession of their new home when one of their children took sick and before morning proved a victim to cholera. In less than ten days eight of the party died of the same disease. Some are buried on Dilman Moyer's farm near Bridgeport while the Howlett's are buried at Snyder's, Bloomingdale. Noah Hembling and his wife, relatives of those who came in 1831, also died of the same disease. They are buried on Mr. Moyer's farm. After the decease of the mother of the named family, the father, Isaac Woolner, was married again. His second wife was Bridget Connor, widow of Mr. Connor. There were six children of the second wife, namely: Ann, married to Samuel Rowney, Abraham, William, married to a Miss Moore, George, James, and Mary Jane, married to Joseph Carr.

North of the village of Bridgeport, on the corner of two adjoining farms, lie, the bodies of cholera victims. Mr. Wilfred Roedding of Bridgeport in 1966, can remember seeing at least 2 large crosses and 4 or 5 small crosses. The people buried here are: Mrs. Isaac Woolner (Sara Hembling) born Jul 11 1797 died July 8, 1832. One Woolner child June 29, 1832, Noah Hembling (brother of Sarah), Noah Hembling's wife Hannah, their daughter Mary Hembling 1825-1832.

These people are buried in the corner lots ot two farms, the Dilman Moyer farm and the farm of John Brubacher, later Roedding and 1965 Angus Snyder farmer, now sold for development and the property of the present Brubaker farm. The house of the Dilman Moyer was across the road, and the barn where the Oswald Mink Farm is. Mr. Wilfred Roedding remembers (1966) seeing wooden crosses in 1905, and the date on the crosses was nearly faded, but could make out he the date of 1832. Dilman Moyer sold the farm to Pomeroy, J. B. In 1906 and moved Disbury, Alberta. He remembers 2 larges crosses and possibly 4 or 5 small crosses. The mounds of the graves could still be seen in -1940 and possibly there are still a few mounds today (1966)

    • Land: Bef 1831, Waterloo Township - Beasley's Old Survey Lot 03, Waterloo County, Ontario

    Notes:

Beside the many hardships, labors and sufferings in getting here and making themselves homes, quite a few settlers along where Blair is now situated were visited by a fire this spring of 1806.

On the 6th of May fire was set to a Job [a tract of land with timber slashed down ready to be burned so that the land could be farmed later] of 10 or 15 acres, soon after which a great wind arose, and swept through the new clearings and destroyed fences, houses and barns.

Abraham Stauffer had his barn burnt.
Abraham Bechtel had his house and barn burnt.
Jacob Bechtel's house was saved but his barn and everything else were consumed.
Nathaniel Dodge who was the last of the settlers along the river, had two barns with all their contents burnt.

The fire went on making the most fearful destruction of all kinds of valuable timber. Thus those settlers who were probably the most advanced with their new homes were suddenly left without house, food or clothing, and were obliged to go below Dundas through mud, water, swamp and forest for provisions and other necessaries, which were not obtainable from their neighbors.

...No one was exempt from non-combatant duties, although some resisted at times. Some were fined heavily in court. Cornelius Pannebecker removed the wheels from his wagon to save it, although his horse and son were still conscripted. Elizabeth (Gabel) Bechtel was threatened at sword-point by an officer who knew she was hiding oxen, which he sought for a massive-scale transport operation to the Detroit River.

    Notes:

Benjamin Hallman, "was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as his calling. During the great financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule all these parties in a very few years were the possessors of valuable farms. Such was the case with Benjamin Hallman, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and, finding things to his advantage, he moved to Canada in 1825 (See page 56 for more information) and settled in Waterloo County, two miles west of the town of Waterloo. Here he resided until spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm, then nearly all forest. This farm is now in possession of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old progenitor died full of years, September 10th, 1869. On September 2nd, 1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th, 1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, save the two youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were born in Waterloo County, Ontario"
