SNYDER, John Willard Shirk 1915 - 2012 John died peacefully, with family at his side, at Parkwood Mennonite Home, Waterloo, on Sunday, July 22, 2012. He was in his 98th year. John was married to Lena (Martin) who predeceased him in 2007. They were married for 66 years. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Carl), Stuart (Margaret), Brenda and daughter-in-law Peggy. He will also be remembered by his grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian), Brad, Joanna, Kevin (Anne), Kristine, Jeff (Jill), Sheila, Mark (Bev), Greg (Nicole), Brent (Lauren), Nadine and Yves. Also his great-grandchildren Owen, Leah, Cassidy, Addison, Michaella, Bronwyn, Blake, Trent, Ross, Lena, Tyson, Jack, Lily, PJ, Bianca, and Tiana. John is also survived by his in-laws, Valina, Lucinda, Viola, Butch, and Melba Martin. He was predeceased by his son James (1991), son-in-law Peter (1999), and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Eph and Naomi Hoffman, Elmer and Mabel Martin, Willard Martin, Ethleen Martin and Ida Martin. John was the only surviving child of Addison D. and Maria Shirk Snyder. John lived and farmed in Bloomingdale for 80 years until a stroke forced him to retire. He was a lifelong member of Bloomingdale Mennonite Church. He was on the board of directors at the Mennonite Aid Union and also the Waterloo Co-Operative. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the Bloomingdale Mennonite Church on Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 9: 45 to 10: 45 a.m. A memorial service to celebrate John's life and faith will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Barb Smith-Morrison officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Cremation has taken place. She was the beloved wife of John W. S. Snyder, who together joyfully shared 66 years of marriage. She is survived by 24 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Martha (Roy) Goshen, Indiana. Heritage Awards presented to diverse group: Honouring a time of memories-
Alice Koch has been involved in many and varied activities during herlife - education, family, church, community and literary.


She was born Feb. 1, 1913, the d/o Menno and Amelia (Bergey) Nahrgang, and recently celebrated her 92nd birthday at her home on the farm on Haysville Road where she was born.

She attended Haysville Public School, SS No. 6 Wilmot, and passed her Entrance examinations at the age of 12, having completed the eight grades in 6 yrs. Her mother thought she was too young to attend high school, so kept her home for a year. For 3 yrs, starting in 1926, she attended New Hamburg Continuation School. Her fourth and last year she attended KW Collegiate, Kitchener and completed the required form five upper schoolclasses (Gr. 13) and middle school physics. Getting to the Collegiate meant walking the two miles to the train station, commuting on the regular passenger train with students from Shakespeare, New Hamburg and Baden. To return in the afternoon, she had to meet the train at 4 o'clock and ride the freight train with an old style passenger car. This was often a time-consuming ride since freight cars often had to be left atstops along the way.

Alice began attending Stratford Normal School in Sept. 1930 to prepare for a teaching career, her long time dream. (Her mother and grandfather,David Bergey had been teachers). She started teaching in 1931, first at Rosebank, SS8 Wilmot, for one year, and then for 8 yrs at Clachan, SS No.3 North Easthope. Both schools were one-room classrooms with 8 grades,and large enrollments varying from 40-50 pupils - no small challenge for a beginning teacher.

Family responsibilities would occupy the next several decades. On Aug.14, 1940 she married Lester Koch of Conestoga, a partner in Koch Brothers Butchers, in St. Jacobs and later Kitchener. On Dec. 31, 1942 they moved from the city house to the farm of her father. Life on the farm was busier than in the city, with a whole house, garden, lawn, flower beds,field work and chores. By 1956 there were 10 children as well as her father to manage (he lived until 1962 and died at the age of 95).

The education of her family was always a priority. She saw to it that each child was keeping up in school, and encouraged them to go on. It is a tribute to her that all ten of her children graduated from Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School. Most of them have pursued post-secondary education, and some graduate degrees. They are involved in education, nursing, ministry, publishing, silo-building and other agri-business.

By the fall of 1962, all the children were attending school in public, high and university. This gave Alice time to devote to church andcommunity interests. She now was able to teach an adult Sunday School class at Biehn Mennonite church, which she continued to do until she was almost 90 yrs old, help with Summer Bible School at Blenheim Church, and attend sewing circle. She served on the Women's Missionary and Service Commission Executive Committee, including several years as president.Along with Lester she attended Haysville Home and School meetings, and later became involved with the KW Home and School organization, serving several years as president. With changes in education, Haysville Public School was closed and the building purchased by the community.

In April 1976, she began working at 50 Kent Ave., Kitchener, two days a week as supervisor of the Mennonite Cutting Room. It stocked fabrics for quilts and crafts for the MCC Relief Sale held annually in New Hamburg,and various items needed for MCC projects. She was an employee until 1996 and then a volunteer doing the same work as before, until she retired in Oct. 2001.
Piecing tops from an assortment of patches and quilting is a source of challenge and satisfaction that she still enjoys. Many have been given to the Mennonite Relief Sale. She also donated items to Conrad GrebelArchives and to the Archives at Castle Kilbride.

Alice also assisted in assembling family trees for her family. Her familly and friends appreciate her contribution to their lives. In 2002 she published for their benefit, a 75 page book, 'A Time for Memories'."

Mrs. Addison D. Snyder

BLOOMINGDALE, Mrs. Addison D. Snyder, 72, died suddenly, Wednesday, at her home. Born June 10, 1881, in Bridgeport, she was Maria Shirk, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk. She was a member of the Snyder Mennonite Church, Bloomingdale. On June 1, 1904, she was married to Mr. Snyder in Waterloo. Surviving are a son, John W. S., of Bloomingdale; one brother, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport; one step-brother, Norman Krampien of Waterloo; one step-sister, Mrs. Walter Snider of Bridgeport; three sisters, Mrs. Addison S. Snider and Mrs. Benjamin Drudge of Bridgeport and Mrs. Walter Shantz of Baden. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel funeral home, Kitchener, until Friday, at 10 a.m., whenremoval will be made to the residence. Removal will be made from the residence Saturday, at 2 p.m., for thefuneral at 2: 30 p.m., at the Snyder Mennonite Church, Bloomingdale. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. John W. Snyder, pastor of the church, will officiate. Flowers are gratefully declined.

He joined the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church as a young man and remained a member until his death. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Church on Feb. 28, 1956, in charge of Howard S. Bauman, assisted by Noah Hunsberger and Oliver D. Snider. Interment was made in the cemetery at Three Bridges.

CHARLES R. KOCH

Charles R. Koch, 77, of R.R. 2. Waterloo, died Saturday at the K-W Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Conestogo March 16, 1878, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Koch. Mr Koch farmed until 1941 when he retired. He was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church.

In 1904 he married the former Menerva Swartz, who died in 1954. He was also predeceased by one son, Stanley, in 1941; six brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are six sons, Lester and Orton of New Hamburg: Phares of Kitchener, Oliver of Conestogo. Roy of St Jacobs and Charles of Listowel; three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Mabel) Kufske of Kitchener, Mrs. Norman (Gladys) Martin of St. Jacobs and Mrs. Nelson (Vera) Snyder of R.R. 2, Waterloo; three sisters, Mrs. Leah Musselman of Kitchener, Mrs. George Reist of Rosedale and Mrs. Titus Hallman of Rochester; 40 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A private funeral was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m., at the Nelson Snyder home, R.R. 2. Waterloo, followed by a public memorial service in St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Rev. Howard S. Bauman, Bishop Oliver Snider and Noah Hunsberger officiating.

The body was removed from the Dreisinger Funeral Par- lor, Elmira, Monday and taken to the Snyder home.

A son (Stanley) preceded her. In her youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church of which she was a faithful member until death. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, Oct. 19, by Noah Hunsberger, assisted by Oliver D. Snider. Interment was made in the cemetery at Three Bridges.

Nahrgang, Menno S., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nahrgang, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., March 16, 1867; died during his sleep at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., June 30, 1962; aged 95 y. 3 m. 14 d. His wife, the former Amelia Bergey, died in 1936. Surviving are one daughter (Alice-Mrs. Lester Koch, New Hamburg), 2 foster sons (Alfred and Philip Richardson, Wellesley), and 16 grandchildren. He was a member of the Biehn Church, where funeral services were held July 4, in charge of Curtis Cressman and Irvin Cressman.

Nahrgang.-Amelia Bergey, beloved wife of Menno Nahrgang, passed away at her home near New Hamburg, Ont., on Sunday morning, April 19, 1936, after an illness of only a few months. Death was due to a heart attack. She was born in Wilmot Tp., Sept. 20, 1873, the daughter of the late David and Louisa (Bowman) Bergey. At the age of 18 she accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Mennonite Church, of which she remained an active and faithful member to the end. As a young woman Sister Nahrgang followed the teaching profession for a period of ten years. She was a former student of Elkhart Institute and Goshen College. In 1909 she was married to Menno Nahrgang, and since her marriage has resided on the farm near New Hamburg. In the Sunday school she served as a teacher for many years. With the beginning of the women's missionary organization in Ontario she was appointed president, which office she held until her death, besides being the president of the local organization during that entire period. Surviving are her husband, 1 daughter (Alice), and 2 adopted sons (Fred and Philip Richardson) ; also 1 sister (Mrs. Fred B. Miller of Kitchener) and 3 brothers (Gilbert of New Dundee, Milton of Toronto, and Herbert of New Hamburg). A sister (Eva) and a brother (Ezra) predeceased her. In her passing, her home will miss her as a kind and loving mother and companion, the church has lost one who sought to carry forward her program at the cost of sacrifice, and in the community she will be missed as one who was always ready to lend a helping hand. Funeral services were held April 22 from her late home, followed by public services at the Biehn Church and burial in the adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by the brethren, M. Hallman, S. F. Coffman, and C. C. Cressman.
