Fatal Railway Accident - A Boy Meets His Death At The Bruce Street Crossing

A very sad and fatal accident happened on Wednesday forenoon, at the crossing of the G.T.R. on Bruce street, near the Stockwell mills, by which Ellery J. Dykeman, a boy aged about 16 years, eldest son of Mrs. A. Dykeman, St. Andrew's St., lost his life. The youth was driving Mr. George Laird's delivery wagon, and in crossing the track, (going from Hawthorne St.,) at the place mentioned, was struck by the 11:09 express going south. The horse having just cleared the track escaped without injury, the wagon was carried along by the train for about 20 yards and thrown up against a freight car standing on the mill siding, the contents of the vehicle being strewed promiscuously along the track. The driver (Dykeman) was thrown about 15 years, lighting upon his head on the east side of the track. Assistance was promptly at hand and he was carried into the house of Mr. James McAuslan, nearby, medical aid summoned, and everything possible done to restore him to consciousness, but all to no purpose, as he succumbed to his injuries about half an hour after the accident. The boy, we think, must have been struck by the engine, as the mere fact of him being thrown that distance to the ground, could hardly account for the nature and extent of all his injuries. They were mainly on the left side of body and consisted of fracture of the skull and jaw, ribs staved in and piercing left lung, compound fracture of the thigh, and the left ear nearly torn out.

Young Dykeman was a trustworthy boy, had been in his late position for over two years, and was the chief support of his widowed mother, who was well-nigh distracted on receiving intelligence of the fatality.

The crossing where the accident occurred is a very dangerous one, as people going from Hawthorne street, east along Bruce, cannot, on account of the Stockwell mill building, see a train coming from the north, and the noise of the mill running prevents them hearing it.

    Notes:

This locality appears to have always had a weakness for theatricals, for an organization under the modest title of the " Galt Thespian Amateurs" was effected during the summer of 1843, and broke out into open performance towards the fall months. The chief Thespians were Messrs John Dodds, James Allen, John Scott, Dominick Ramore, Henry Smith, James Smith, Archibald Buchanan, Wm. Snow, Wm. Hearle, Jesse Thornton, Henry Aldous, and Washington Wood. These gentlemen took the different characters in the plays, Mr. John McAuslan acted as prompter, and the orchestra, and a capital one it was, was composed of Messrs. Glennie, Pembroke, and Wilsden, who will be remembered by those with good memories, as most excellent musicians.

    DEATH OF MRS. KILGOUR

She Passed Away Friday Afternoon After a lingering Illness

Many friends in Galt and vicinity will be pained to learn of the death of Jane Caldwell, relict of the late William Kilgour. This lady, who was held in much esteem and was widely known, has been ailing since December last and of late was a great sufferer. Her death was not, therefore, unexpected, and came Friday afternoon, at two o'clock, as a release from pain and trouble. Jane Caldwell, the subject of this sketch, was born in the northern part of Ireland and was in the 68th year of her age. She came with her parents to Canada at an early age and first settled in Blenheim Township, near Ayr. Some forty-five or six years ago, she was married to the late William Kilgour, who passed away about thirty-three years since. Mr. Kilgour came originally from Hamilton and at the time of his marriage was a well-known farmer in Blenheim. He removed to Ayr, some years after his marriage and subsequently went to Paris to reside. It was in the latter town that his death took place. Mrs. Kilgour, then left a widow, continued to make her home there for some time. Then she removed to Ayr and some twenty-five years ago took up her residence in Galt, where she has resided ever since. Her death took place at the residence of her son, Joseph Kilgour, Park Avenue. Mrs. Kilgour was the sole surviving member of a family of twelve children, with the exception of one brother, Mr. George Caldwell, who resides at Branchton. Mr. J. Caldwell, of the Central Hotel, is a nephew of the deceased. The family of three sons and two daughters, are left to mourn the demise of an affectionate mother. The sons are, William, Robert and Joseph, all of Galt. The daughters are, Mrs. John McMicken, London, and Mrs. James McAuslan, Galt. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church here and was a loving wife, a faithful mother and a true friend. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, at three o'clock, from the residence of Mr. Joseph Kilgour, Park Avenue, to Mt, View cemetery.
