LIFETIMES: From Old Order Mennonite to nursing instructor, Cindy Bolger broke a lot of moulds
Lucinda (Cindy) Bolger of Waterloo, born: Sept. 25, 1921, in Yatton, Ont., died: Dec. 6, 2017, of age-related illness

Cindy Martin was only 12 years old when she left home to work as a mother's helper, where the jobs usually entailed assisting a pregnant mother around the time of birth. These were all temporary positions and it would soon be time to move on, a total of 40 different households before something stirred in Cindy, something that made her decide to make more of her life.

Born the eldest of six into an Old Order Mennonite family in Yatton, in rural Waterloo near Elmira, expectations for the child were limited by her upbringing.

Cindy wrote in her memoir how her parents thought she might possibly complete Grade 8 but they knew with certainly she would end up being a "submissive wife" with a whole passel of kids.

Cindy had seen her fair share of Mennonite women on the farm, working hard, raising families. She was having none of it and surprisingly, her parents supported their head strong, determined daughter. Cindy would eventually become a nurse and nursing instructor as well as a bit of a mother hen to dozens of student nurses at what was then called Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital School of Nursing.

Cindy's rise to this position came after years of struggle.

In his eulogy, oldest son Jim Bolger recalled how his mother's early days were shadowed by extreme poverty.

"Many would describe her family as 'poor Nelson Martin's family' often dependent on others for food and money," he said.....

    WILLIAM WESTFALL

One of our well known citizens was removed by death on Monday evening in the person of Mr. William Westfall, who had reached the age of 77 years.

Mr. Westfall had been ailing for many months though he was not off work a great deal.

He was a hardworking industrious man making regular weekly trips to the Waterloo market, and preparing for this during the week.

He missed only three or four trips before death took him.

For the past eighteen years he was a respected citizen of our burg.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, one son, John of Elmira, and six daughters, Mrs. John Heer (Magdalena), Breslau, Mrs. Simon Wilkie (Lucinda), Bloomingdale, Mrs. Norman Brubacher (Christina), St. Jacobs, Mrs. Nelson Martin (Mary Ann), Elmira, and Misses Amanda and Katie at home, one brother, John, West Montrose, and one sister, Mrs. Susannah Watson, Toronto.

The funeral takes place today (Thursday) from his late residence where a short service will be held; thence to Martin's Meeting House for service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

William married Catharine Sauder 30 Jan 1883, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Catharine (daughter of Jacob N. Sauder and Barbara Funk) was born 30 Jul 1859, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 23 Oct 1940, St. Jacobs, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , Martin Meeting House Cemetery, Waterloo City, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. • Residence: 1911, Floradale, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; Mennonite
    • Residence: 1921, St. Jacobs, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; Mennonite

    Notes:

Catherine (Sauder) Westfall was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., July 30, 1859; died at her home in St. Jacobs, Ont., Oct. 23, 1940; aged 81 y. 2 m. 24 d.

She was united in marriage in 1883 to William Westfall who predeceased her 6 years ago.

To this union were born 10 children of whom 7 survive: Magdalena (Mrs. John Heer), John, Lucinda (Mrs. Simon Wilkie), Christina (Mrs. Norman Brubacher), Mary Ann (Mrs. Nelson Martin), Amanda and Katie.

She also leaves 25 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers (Henry and John Sauder of St. Jacobs, Ont.).

Early in the morning of July 6, 1940, she took sick with a heart condition and complications which later proved to be internal cancer.

She suffered much pain during her illness but bore it all patiently.

Her desire was to go home. She was much concerned about her soul, was constantly striving to prepare herself, and the bright testimony she left gives us the assurance that she was ready to go.

The last clear words she said were "Vas Gott tuht das ist wohl getan".

She is very much missed, but what is the earthly loss is her gain.

Her favourite chapters were John 11 and 14 and she often asked us to read them.

She was a member of the Old Order Mennonites till her death.

The services at the home and meeting house were conducted by Daniel Brubacher, Daniel Martin, and Abraham Bearinger.
