Genealogy Is Where You Find It
    William A. Schmidt

In 1981, my wife, Dorothy (nee Milatz) became interested in the possibility of compiling her family genealogy. She solicited my help. Unfortunately, by this time, both of her parents were deceased, as were the other relatives of her parents generation. Over a period of time, we were successful in gathering some information from old Family records found in a trunk, and from old copies of The Galt Reporter, which has a Preston section, that gave individual family happenings, such as who had moved into the area, and who was visiting who, etc. We found that great grand-parents, Frederick and Elizabeth Milatz, along with grandfather Frederick William had emigrated from Germany, in 1886, to Preston, Ontario. However, none of the sources showed the name of the town or village in Germany. We decided to question the older first cousins, without success. Finally, in desperation, we visited the youngest of these, Kenneth Schultz, living at Baileyboro, Ontario. Kenneth was able to tell us that great grandparents, Frederick and Elizabeth had lived in a small village, near the Elbe river, about 20 km south of Hamburg, Germany. He also knew that Frederick had been employed as a horse trainer, on a large estate and, from his work, often observed ocean going ships plying their trade on the river. We didn't, however, know the name of the village.

But, how did Kenneth come to know this vital information? It seems, that following the death of my wife's grandfather, Frederick William, in 1934, her parents, Frank, and Bessie Milatz, had occupied the old house in Preston. Grandmother, Anna, stayed on to live with them, but insisted on being semi independent. She maintained her own one room apartment in the house, and made most of her own meals. Over a period of time, the family came to fear that, only cooking for herself, she was not observing the most nutritious eating habits. At the same time, it was found that grandson, Kenneth, whose parents lived nearby, was not doing his home work from School. So, the family conferred, and, as a result, Kenneth was required to report to Grandmother after 4.00 O'clock, and she supervised his studies. He was also encouraged to stay for the evening meal. Now, grandmother, having to prepare for two, was much more careful in the preparation of same. The spin off, of course, was, during spare moments, grandmother related all kinds of family history not told to the other relatives. Now, at least, we had an area to explore. Consulting a map of Germany, we found at least six villages that suited the description Kenneth had given us. We needed more information.

During the early 1920's, my wife's father, Frank Milatz, two of his brothers, Albert and Lawrence, and a sister and brother-in-law had gone to Detroit, Michigan to work. Following the 1929 stock market crash, all but one Milatz, had returned to Preston, Ontario area. In an attempt to locate the family that had remained in Michigan, we consulted the Detroit telephone directory at the Kitchener Public Library. We found a Fred Milatz listed, and wrote to him, hoping he might be a descendant. Fred did answer our enquiry with a genealogy of his family, which did not link up in any way with the Preston family. Fred's family had emigrated from Holland to Michigan. However, he showed that the family had earlier moved to The Netherlands from a small village of Nieuhaus, Germany, just to the south of Hamburg.
Again, Consulting the map of Germany, we found that Niehaus was the likely long sought village. We were later able to confirm this location.
