    Sudden Death of Jonathan Kropf

The people of the town were shocked last Sunday to learn that our esteemed townsman, Mr. Jonathan Kropf, died very suddenly at four o'clock that morning. Mr. Kropf had been to Berlin on Saturday, and arriving home in the evening retired apparently in the best of health. About four o'clock he awoke and complained of feeling unwell, passing away a few minutes afterwards. The late Mr. Kropf was in his 64th year and a life long resident of this township, residing for many years on a farm at Pinehill, and was also a well known contractor, making a specialty of moving large buildings, in which he had in late years made himself prominent in this locality. A few years ago he left his farm to a son, and moved to this village. Deceased was of a genial and kindly disposition and beloved by all who knew him. He was twice married; his first wife, (nee Mathilda Hostetler) predeceased him about ten years ago. He is survived by his second wife, one daughter and four sons. The children are: Norman, of Michepecoten; Edwin, of Earl Grey, Sask.; Herbert on the old homestead; Jacob, at home, and Lavina, of Guelph. The funeral took place from his late residence on Wednesday morning to Geiger's Cemetery, Bleam's Road, and was very largely attended.

    Death of Moses Hostetler

One by one the old pioneers of the township are being called away, and in the death of Mr. Moses Hostetler, which occurred at his home on Wednesday evening, August 26th, Wilmot loses one of its very earliest settlers, and also one of the few ones of these to remain. Mr. Hostetler reached the ripe old age of 95 years, 7 months and 14 days, and was at the time of his death the oldest man in Wilmot, and perhaps in the County of Waterloo.

The late Mr. Hostetler was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on the 12th of January, 1813, and came to Canada in 1834. He settled in Wilmot township in 1836, when this part of the country was yet a dense forest, and with the ambition of perseverance, characteristic of these early settlers, he yewed out a home for himself adjoining the present village of New Hamburg, and transformed it into one of the best farms in the county. On this he carried on his agricultural pursuits and lived continually thereon until death claimed him on Wednesday last, covering a period of over 70 years. On the 4th of July 1842, he was married to Margaret Latschaw, and the union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, four of who predeceased him. They were Lavina, William, Moses and Matilda (Mrs. Jonathan Kropf). His wife died about twenty-one years ago.

The remaining children are: David, Christian, Levi, Mrs. Solomon Shantz, and Mrs. Emanuel Hamacher, Wilmot; Isaac, of New Hamburg; Daniel, of Berlin, and Henry, of Wellesley. The late Mr. Hostetler was in active service during the rebellion of 1837, and took part in several skirmishes on Pelee Island and in the western peninsula of Ontario. In politics he was a life long Liberal. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, from his late residence to Christner's Cemetery.

    _______________

    MOSES HOSTETLER.

Before concluding my sketch of the business interests of Hamburg I feel it my duty to pay tribute to this grand old man of the neighborhood. The walk to his home afforded me ample compensation for the time taken up. A stroll of a half mile north on the "Dundas Road" brings you to a long lane that leads down to his residence, a solid stone structure surounded with fruit trees and ornamental foliage. The lane is bordered on both sides by young maples, and it is positively the most inviting approach to a farm home that I have entered for many a day. The farm contains two hundred acres and is one of the most valuable in this section. A greater portion of it was a dense bush when Mr. Hostetler settled on it October 26, 1836. He was born in Pennsylvania on January 12, 1813, being now near the end of his 86th year. His parents and several brothers came here at the same time, but when the Canadian rebellion broke out, the father, being opposed to the Government, induced all the members of his family, but the subject of this sketch, to return to the States. Several of his brothers are now living in the West. The father died here several years ago. Mr. Hostetler says he never regretted remaining in Wilmot as his life here has been crowned with prosperity and his health has been exceptionally good He was married July 5, 1842, to Miss Margaret, daughter of the late Isaac Latchau. She died March 3, 1887, after a happy married life of nearly forty- five years. They raised a family of ten children, all of whom are now well provided for Levi, one of the sons, is now living on the old homestead, and is working the farm. Mr. Hostetler is remarkably active for one of his years and makes almost daily trips on foot to town, a distance of a mile and a half. As a pedestrian he will hustle many of the young men of to-day. His eyesight is yet good with the aid of glasses, and in conversation his mind gives no evidence of weakness usually the case in persons of such an advanced age. He uses the pipe and the weed, but does not indulge to excess in this habit. He also chewed tobacco, but be suddenly abandoned that habit at a moment when his wife was on her deathbed, she having convinced a dislike to his breath on account of the habit. In early days Mr. Hostetler was a hunter of considerable note, and related to the writer several thrilling adventures he had with bear and buck deer. On one occasion he had a close encounter with a large black she bear and her two cubs. Not being armed at the time, he attacked him with a club. The bear suddenly turned upon him, and would undoubtedly have made a subject for a funeral in the neighborhood had it not been for his faithful dog "Smoke," who attacked the enemy in the rear; but "Smoke" was knocked out in the first round by a well directed blow from the paw of bruin. By this time, however, Mr. H. was relieved from his perilous predicament by the arrival on the scene of one of his sons with the old family rifle, and bruin was soon made to bite the dust. The carcass was skinned and the hide afterwards sold to Benjamin Davitt, of Waterloo. Mr. Hostetler has been a member of the old Mennonite creed for the past twenty years, and is a Reformer in politics. He is openly opposed to the prohibition movement. The extent of his drinking is a glass of beer now and then, and while he does not tolerate intemperance he is inclined to the belief that absolute prohibition is contrary to constitutional rights and not in keeping with our much vaunted liberty and freedom. In his home Mr. Hostetler makes the stranger feel at ease by his generous hospitality, and the happy vein in which he recites events of the past.
