Dennis Knechtel 26 Jul 1955 - 1 Oct 2021

Dennis Paul Knechtel, born July 26, 1955 in Kitchener, Ontario, the second of seven children. After school, Dennis worked at his father's painting business for a short period of time as well as working on the farm with the Weber's before heading West to fulfil a dream at the age of 18.

He had always been inspired by stories of the big mountains being so high that one could look down upon the airplanes flying, so he loaded his canoe on top of the car and began his grand adventure. Shortly after settling in Osoyoos he attended a church youth gathering in Princeton where he met his future wife Nettie. They were married in August 1974 and made Oliver their home. Over the years Dennis worked at the packing house, worked on the ranch for Doug Winter, and was an employee at a sign company belonging to Albert Lecompte. He would later start his own company, first as a backyard business and then becoming the current Outreach Neon Ltd. Dennis, the adventurer was also a risk taker. He loved the outdoors and was happy when surrounded by nature. Family gatherings were very important to Dennis and there were many. An advocate of Oliver Family Days, he became the chairman of the event. He also sponsored a local baseball team called The Neon Riders.

Dennis is survived by his wife Nettie Knechtel and his children:

Jennifer Hartle (Matt), Amy Encina, Jeremy Knechtel and Melissa Knechtel and his seven grandchildren: James, Jayanna, Ryan, Jayden, Jasmine, Emerrit and Arabella.

His parents: Raymond Alfred Knechtel & Gladys (Scheerer) Knechtel. Siblings: Sharon Knechtel, Doris Klenot (late Larry), Brenda Bushell (late Chris), Maynard (Brenda) Knechtel, Christine (Paul) Black.

Predeceased by his daughter Angela Knechtel and his brother Donald Knechtel.

A celebration of Dennis' life will be held at the Oliver Alliance Church.

Knechtel, Mrs. Edna - Peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 15, 1989, at St. Mary's Hospital, Edna Knechtel (nee Snyder), in her 98th year, of 49 Hampton Place, Kitchener. Beloved wife of the late Ephraim Knechtel, who predeceased her on November 5, 1974. Dear mother of Clifford and his wife Reta, Grace, Orval and his wife Mary, all of Kitchener, Dorothy of Waterloo, Fern of Kitchener, Lila and her husband Clayton L. Martin of Floradale, Alfred of Cambridge, Erma and her husband Gordon Gingrich of Elmira, Carol and her husband Alson Martin of Wellesley. Lovingly remembered by her 25 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Sister of Percy Snyder and Mrs. Ida Hallman, both of New Hamburg. Predeceased by her son, Paul and her sister, Mrs. Avon Witmer. Mrs. Knechtel was a lifelong member of the Mannheim Mennonite Church. A daughter of the late Christian B. Snyder and the former Esther Bechtel. Visitation at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, this evening (Monday), 7-9 pm and Tuesday, 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service at the Mannheim Mennonite Church, on Wednesday at 3 pm, Rev. James Reesor will conduct the service. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Knechtel.-On the 21st of December, 1906, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., , wife of Alfred Knechtel; aged 55 Y., 7 M., 19 D. She was married to her surviving husband Jan. 19, 1875. To this union were born twelve children, of whom two sons and five daughters survive. Buried in the Mannheim Mennonite cemetery on the 24th. Funeral services in German by Solomon Gehman and in English by Noah Stauffer^.

KNECHTEL.-Sister Elizabeth (Hallman) Knechtel was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 20th, 1851, and died at her home in Mannheim, Ont., Dec., 21. 1906; aged 55y. 8m. 1d. She was a member of the Mennonite church for over thirty years. She was united in marriage to Bro. Alfred Knechtel Jan. 19, 1875. To this union were born 12 children, 5 children and 2 grandchildren preceded her to the spirit world. She leaves a sorrowing husband, 5 daughters, 2 sons, and 4 grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind wife and loving mother. She was sick 9 weeks and had to suffer a great deal, but bore it all patiently. She had a desire to go home and be with Christ. In the forenoon she bade her husband and children good-bye, and told them to be faithful and meet her in her home above. Her remains were laid to rest in the Latchars cemetery. The house was well filled with friends and neighbors. Services conducted by Enos Cressman at the home and Noah Stauffer and Solomon Gehman at the church from Phil. 1: 23, "Having desired to depart and be with Christ which is far better."

Snyder-Christian B., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses K. Snyder, was born in Wilmot Twp., Jan. 12, 1862; passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ephraim Knetchel, Petersburg, Ont., April 19, 1944; aged 83y. Bro. Snyder's death was due to a heart attack a few days previous. He suffered from a weak heart for a number of years. He was married to Esther Bechtel who predeceased him June 4, 1940. To this union were born one son and 3 daughters; Percy, Rosebank; Edna ( Mrs. Ephraim Knechtel); Avon ( Mrs. Willard Witmer), Rosebank; and Ida (Mrs. Simon Hallman,) Kitchener, Ont.; who along with one brother (Moses), 28 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren all survive him. Bro. Snyder was a member of the Latschar church for many years. He was a quiet man, but he gave a silent testimony wherever he went because of his consistent life as a Christian. "He being dead, yet speaketh" Funeral services were conducted April 21 at his home in charge of Bro. Lorne W. Schmitt and at the Latschar Mennonite Church by Brethren M.S. Hallman and Lorne Schmitt. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Snyder. --- Esther, daughter of Noah and Veronica (Christner) Bechtel, was born Dec. 5, 1863; died at her home near Petersburg, Ont., united in marriage to Christian B. Snyder Oct. 7, 1885, to which union were born 1 son and 3 daughters: Percy, Edna (Mrs. Ephraim Knechtel) Avon (Mrs. Willard Witmer), all of Petersburg, and Ida (Mrs. Simon Hallman) of Kitchener. She is survived by 27 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild; also by 2 brothers (Moses Bechtel of Winnipeg, Man., and Noah Bechtel of Breslau, Ont.), and a host of relatives and friends. She was a faithful and loyal member of the Latschar Mennonite Church until her death, having accepted Christ in her late teens. Funeral services were conducted by Bros. Manasseh Hallman and Lorne Schmitt, Bro. Hallman using for his test Psa. 27: 1. The services were held at the home and at the Latschar Mennonite Church. The body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Her testimony is well expressed in the following poem:
"Is not even death a gain to those
Whose life to God was given?
Gladly to earth their eyes they close,
To open them in Heaven."

Ernst.-Henry B. Ernst was born at Bamberg, Ont., March 11, 1873; died at his residence in Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 1, 1937; aged 64 y. 7 m. 19 d. He was married to Eleanor Randall who predeceased him 27 years ago. He leaves his beloved wife and 2 sons (Eldon of Embro, Stanley at home), 3 daughters (Mrs. Henry Scheerer and Mrs. John Scheerer of St. Jacobs, and Elma at home). Brother Ernst accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church in which communion he fellowshipped until the Lord called him away. Services were in charge of Bro. J. B. Martin, assisted by Bros. N.. Hunsberger and Jonas Snider. Text, I Cor. 15: 20.
