    Demise of Peter Marshall
    - In the death of Mr. Peter Marshall, which unlooked for event occurred early Monday morning at his home, Northumberland St., Ayr, the community loses another life-long, well-known and highly esteemed citizen. The deceased, who was in his 51st year, had been ill for some time, and had retired from his occupation as a farmer, but he had been improving in health up to a few days before his death, so that his sudden passing came as a shock to the community. He was born in the adjoining township of Blenheim, and lived there all his life until coming to Ayr last spring. Like many of the successful tillers of the soil in this section, Mr. Marshall adhered closely to his calling, seldom taking much interest in political or municipal affairs. He, however, identified himself with the Reform party, and in religion was a Presbyterian - a member of Stanley-St. Church and an ex-office bearer. His partner in life, whose maiden name was Maggie Oliver, survives, together with five children - three sons and two daughters, namely, Anthony, Leslie, Chester, Margaret and Belle, all of whom are at home. Three brothers and three sisters also survive. They are - Stephen, Blenheim; Anthony, Calgary; Ralph, Winnipeg; Maggie, Ayr; Mrs. E. Deans, Paris, and Mrs. Geo. Dickie, London. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, when the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Ayr cemetery by a large number of friends and relatives. The services were conducted by Deceased's pastor, Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Thos. Hall, Cameron Marshall, W. A. Ramsay, T. O. Scott, Wm. Manson and George Gourlay (Paris). Mr. Marshall was an Oddfellow and the members of the Order here attended the obsequies in a body. The cortege was the largest ween in Ayr in some time.

    Passing of John Currie
Lived Upwards of 90 Years in This Community

This week we have to chronicle the passing of the oldest resident of the community in the person of John Currie, who died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Robert Smuck, Paris Road, on Monday, June 20th, at the ripe age of over 95 years. The deceased was born in Roxboroughshire, Scotland, and came to Canada at the age of four years, settling on the farm now occupied by Mr. Stephen Gemmell, afterwards locating at different periods on several other farms in the locality.

Over 40 years ago Mr. Currie discontinued farming and moved into Ayr, where he started a coal yard, being the first coal merchant in the village. During the time he was farming, he also did a lot of teaming between here and Hamilton, and other points from lake to lake.

To have lived upwards of 90 years in one community falls to the lot of few men. The changes he witnessed in that long period can probably be better imagined than described. Suffice it that in his early days the country was in a crude state. There were no railroads and in fact very few and very indifferent roads of any kind. The forests were the rendezvous of Indians, wolves, bears and highway men, and the whole country was passing through the throes of a rebellion. He successfully weathered all these adverse conditions and prospered as the country developed.

Mr. Currie was a Reformer in politics and a Presbyterian in religion, being a member of Knox United Church. His partner in life was Agnes Pringle, who predeceased him some years. A family of five were born to them - two of whom, Isabell and William, have passed on before.

Those living are Mrs. Geo. Swan, sr., Ayr; Mrs. Margaret Bell, Galt; and Mrs. Robert Smuck, South Dumfries. A brother and sister, Peter Currie and Mrs. Christie (Toronto), also survive. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery yesterday, the funeral being very largely attended. Rev. J. J. Brown conducted the services, and the pallbearers were principally grandchildren, viz., Currie Smuck, John, Ewart and James Bell, Robert Smuck and George H. Lawrence.
