    Notes:

Dr. William Lovett Dies In His 96th Year - It was with genuine regret that the citizens of Ayr were informed on Sunday of the death in Detroit of Dr. William Lovett, one of Ayr's grand old men, who had practiced medicine for so many years in this village. Dr. Lovett was in his 96th year, and Ayr experienced its period of greatest growth during the 37 years Dr. Lovett practiced here. Dr. Lovett was born in Ancaster May 29, 1842, and was educated at Ancaster Grammar School. Later he attended the Provincial Normal School, Toronto, and in 1866 received his matriculation at McGill College, Montreal. He graduated in 1870 with the degree of M.D.C.M.. Upon the establishment of a Provincial Board of Examiners Ontario in 1870, Dr. Lovett was among the first to be examined and the first to register. He commenced his practice in Ayr in that year, and continued until 1907, when he retired on account of poor health. The Doctor was one of McGill's first medical students, his medical diploma being No. 2. He was the oldest member in the Medical Council. The Doctor was appointed associate coroner and medical attendant for the CPR at Ayr in 1880 and continued to hold that position during his residence in Ayr. He was an honorary member of the Oxford Medical Association. Dr. Lovett removed to Regina, Sask., with his family in 1907 and remained there until 1912. He returned to Ayr that year, and latterly had been residing with his daughter in Detroit. A son, the late Dr. A. S. Lovett, practiced for many years in Paris. Surviving members of the family are: Mrs. D. C. Petrie, Toronto; A. Morton Lovett, Maclean, Sask., and James H. Lovett, Toronto. A daughter, Mrs. O. T. falls, and a son, William, died some years ago. - The Funeral - The funeral was held Tuesday with service n Knox United Chruch and interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    _____________

    LOVETT, WILLIAM
was born in Ancaster in 1842. He was educated there, and attended the Normal School in Toronto. He entered McGill University and graduated in medicine in 1870. He settled in Ayr immediately after graduation.

He was highly regarded, and in 1889 a discussion regarding possible candidates for Reeve said of him in the Dumfries Reformer:

"Among those mentioned is the name of Dr. Lovett. The Doctor unquestionably possesses quick perception and sound discernment, a lively fancy and a powerful intellect, while at the same time his mind is distinguished in a remarkable degree both for the justness of its conceptions and the accuracy of its reasonings. The powers which he has inherited from nature have been improved by arduous and incessant cultivation, and have raised him at length to a rank in his profession which we are justified in saying can only be attained and supported by uncommon strength of judgement and originality of genius. Should the Doctor allow himself to be nominated for the office it is very doubtful if he would have any opposition."

One account gave the date of his retirement as 1907, on account of ill health. He sold his house and moved to Woodstock in October, 1919. He died in Detroit at the home of his daughter on March 18, 1938 in his 96th year. Besides his daughter he was survived by two sons.
