More scandalous still, an affair was discovered between two of the missionaries, a single teacher named Mary Teall and Thomas Vipond, a married man and father of five. Teall, it turned out, was pregnant with his child. The settlement responded by pulling their children from the school. Rev. Brown, concerned with leading an industrious and morally upright congregation and community, informed the American Missionary Association.
