    Martin, Jesse Bauman (1897-1974)

    Jesse "J. B." Martin (1897-1974) was the son of Daniel E. and Blandina (Bauman) Martin, members of the Martin Old Order Mennonite congregation, north of Waterloo, Ont. With the permission of his parents, Jesse joined the St. Jacobs Mennonite congregation of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario in his late teens. His attendance at Hesston College and Bible School, 1919-23, and a short term at Goshen College in 1924, prepared Jesse for a life of service to the Mennonite Church (MC). He married Naomi Collier in 1926.

    Ordained in 1925 as pastor of the Weber congregation at Strasburg, Ont. (now Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship, Mennonite ), he was transferred to the Erb Street Mennonite congregation, Waterloo, in 1929, where he served until 1964. Ordained bishop in 1947, he served in the Central District, in the Niagara District, and at Clarence Centre, N.Y. His activities in the Mennonite Conference of Ontario included: home evangelist, 1929-34, 1937; Ontario Mennonite Bible School faculty, 1932-65 (principal, 1957-66); assistant moderator of the conference, 1936-45; moderator of the conference 1946-60.

    He served the larger Mennonite Church (MC) on a wide variety of committees dealing with peace and conscientious objection, youth work, conference administration, and publications. Martin also worked with several committees and programs of the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities (MC), including time spent establishing a Mennonite presence in Israel, 1953-54. He was in charge of local arrangements for the Mennonite World Conference (MWC) assembly at Kitchener, 1962, and a member of the MWC presidium, 1964-66. He served the Conference of Historic Peace Churches of Canada as a member of the Peace Problems Committee, 1941-58, and of the Military Problems Committee 1941-64. He served on several Mennonite Central Committee committees, 1944-68, including a term as chairman of the board, 1955-61.

    J.D. Martin, Mennonite bishop, dies

    Rev. Jesse D. Martin, pastor of the Erb St Mennonite Church for 35 years, died at K-W Hospital Monday. He was 76.
    Funeral services will be held at the Erb Street Mennonite Church Thursday at 3 p.m. He will be buried in the church cemetery.

    Mr. Martin, 80 Jackson Ave., Kitchener, was moderator of the Ontario Mennonite Conference and moderator of the general conference.
    He was vice-chairman of the general mission board and former principal and teacher at the Ontario Mennonite Bible School and Institute.
    He was also one of the founders of the Craigwood Home for Boys near Ailsa Craig and was chairman of the home for 15 years.

    During the Second World War, he and Rev. E. J. Swalm of Duntroon negotiated with the federal government for alternate service for Mennonite men.

    Last year he was one of four Canadians honored at the annual meeting of the International Mennonite Central Committee.
    Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters and a brother.

    Martin, Jesse B., son of Daniel E. and Blandina (Bauman) Martin, was born in Waterloo, Ont., Dec. 22, 1897; died at Kitchener, Ont., Mar. 4, 1974; aged 76 y. 2 m. 10 d. On Aug. 15, 1926, he was married to Naomi Collier, who survives. Also surviving are one son (James), 2 daughters (Mary - Mrs. Conrad, and Grace - Mrs. John Cornick), 7 grandchildren, and one brother (Enoch B.). He was ordained to the ministry on Sept. 15, 1925, and served Strasburg and Erb Street Mennonite churches. He was ordained as bishop on June 1, 1947. He served as moderator of Ontario Conference from 1946-1961 and as moderator of General Conference, 1959-1961. He was a member of Erb Street Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Mar. 7, in charge of Galen Johns and E. J. Schwalm; interment in Erb Street Cemetery

    Jesse was born into the Old Order community; ordained by the Mennonite Conference in September 1925 for the Weber Church, Strasburg [Kitchener]. In 1926 he and Naomi were married. She left a teaching job in Missouri. J B, as he was known, assumed the pastorate of Erb Street in 1929 \endash living in the first Mennonite parsonage in Ontario, three blocks from the church \endash and in 1947 was ordained as bishop. He worked part-time in a dairy, and for 34 years taught at Ontario Mennonite Bible School (later the Bible Institute), being principal from 1957 \endash 1966. Naomi grew vegetables, canned them and fruits and jams. She reworked second-hand clothes for her children, took in boarders and did housecleaning for other families. During the Second World War, in November 1940, J B was one of a delegation of eight Mennonite leaders which sat down for discussion with senior officials of the Department of National Defence to negotiate with the federal government for alternate service for Mennonite young men. J B spent many months away from home, negotiating with government officials and visiting the young men in camps. In his absence, Naomi carried on \endash at home and at church. She had to respond to the cares and concerns which would have come to J B.In 1953 Naomi and J B spent six months visiting mission personnel in Belgium and France and helped set up a mission program in Jerusalem. J B semi-retired in 1964, preaching at various locations until 1972. After J B's death, Naomi volunteered at Fairview Mennonite Home helping residents.

    Martin.- Daniel E., son of Daniel S. and Magdalena (Eby) Martin, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Oct. 23, 1868; died at the Fairview Mennonite Home, Preston, Ont., June 9, 1968; aged 99 y. 7 m. 17 d. He was married Oct. 20, 1896, and his wife died Nov. 1, 1929. He is survived by 2 sons (Jesse B. and Enoch B.). Two daughters, 7 sisters, and one brother predeceased him. He was a member of the St. Jacobs Church, where funeral services were held June 12, with Glenn Brubacher and Walter Brubacher officiating; interment in Martin's Cemetery.

    MARTIN. - Blandina Bauman was born Nov. 27, 1870; was married to Daniel E. Martin Oct. 20, 1896, with whom she lived a little over 33 years. During the last three years she was afflicted with cancer of the liver from which she died Nov. 1, 1929; aged 58 y. 11 m. 3 d. She leaves a sorrowing husband and three children (Jesse, minister at Waterloo, Ont.; Enoch, and Lucinda, at home). One daughter (Minerva) died in infancy. She united with the Mennonite Chruch in her youth, and lived a quiet, exemplary life to the end. Funeral services Nov. 3 at the Martins Church near St. Jacobs, Ont., conducted by Bros. On February 24th, 1852, he married Rebecca, daughter of Christian and Magdalena (Shantz) Schneider. She was born August 13th, 1831. On March 16th, 1852 they moved on their farm, being composed of lot No. 84, German Company's Tract, Woolwich Township, two miles north of the village of St. Jacobs, and about the same distance south of Elmira. Here they are still residing and spending the evening of their lives in peace and comfort. Their family consists of twelve children, of whom three died young"

    Bauman.-In Waterloo, Co., Ont., Mrs. Eli Bauman, aged 90 y. 2 m. 27 d., her beloved companion preceding her four years ago. To this union were born 12 children (8 surviving), 69 grandchildren (51 surviving), 144 great-grandchildren (126 surviving), 2 great-great-grandchildren (both surviving).This family is spread all over Canada and the United States. Both were faithful members in the old order Mennonite Church. May we as their family seek to spread the name of Jesus wherever we are. One of the Grandchildren.
