    Louis Weber Dies in West

Well Known Young Man, Son of Roadmaster Weber, Victim of typhoid Fever

Very sad was the intelligence that came this morning to Mrs. P. K. Weber, Queen street, north, telling her of the death last evening, at Fairmount, Sask. of her second son, Louis, after four weeks illness from typhoid fever. On Monday last word reached Mr. and Mrs. Weber that his illness was very serious, and he was not likely to recover. Since his thoughts during his illness had all been of home, it was thought that he might rally if he saw someone from home. On Tuesday morning, therefore, Roadmaster Weber left for his son's home. He will reach there this evening.

Deceased was a well-known young man, having been born twenty-one years ago, in this place, where he spent his life, until last October, when he left for the west. He was married in September to Miss Emma Biesel, of Baden, and the happy young couple lived in Fairmount where deceased owned a farm, and also was proprietor of a livery stable.

He was of a quiet and retiring disposition, and a great lover of his home. He attended the Suddaby School, after which he did teaming work for his father. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church.

The remains will be brought to Berlin where interment will be made.

A sorrowing wife, Mr. and Mrs. P. K. Weber, his parents, and two brothers, Philip and Aldie survive, and mourn the loss of one who was very dear to them. The bereaved have much sympathy from their friends, in their hour of sorrow.

    An Old Pioneer Dead.

Another of the oldest settlers of the Township of Woolwich passed away at Ennira, in the person of Mr. Louis Weber, who after having received a apoplectic attack several weeks ago, succumbed to its effects at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. M. H. Hemmerich, last Friday noon. Deceased was born in Hutchenbausen in Rhinish Bavaria, Germany, in the year 1827, and came to Elmira with his wife and three children in the year 1857. He settled on the farm now owned by Mrs. Braeuchle, about-one mile north- west of Elmira. Later he sold this farm and bought one about two miles west of Elmira, now owned by his son Charles. About 15 years ago he re moved to Hawkesville, where he entered into a general store business with his son Daniel. About 7 years ago he returned to Elmira where he lived with his daughter on William street. He was known as an industrious and respectable citizen. Like many of the first settlers of this neighborhood he was of a hardy constitution and was seldom indisposed until stricken by the disease of which he died. He was a kind husband and leaves a widow, six sons and four daughters to mourn their loss. The sons are: Louis, of Hawkesville, August and Charles, of Woolwich, Philip of Berlin, Daniel of Manitoba, Henry of Salt Lake City, Utah, and the daughters are: Mrs. L. Schmaermund, Mrs. M. H. An Old Resident Gone

One by one, the old pioneer residents with their salutary influence, pass into the great beyond leaving behind them a generation which is prone to underestimate the work done and the influence wielded by their lives.

Death last Monday removed from a sphere of active life that extended far beyond the allotted three score and ten, Mrs. Louis Weber, sr. who had lived in this neighborhood about 40 years. Born in the Rheinish Palitinate, in a small hamlet named Gries, about 79 years ago, she came to America with her husband and three children in 1867 settling on the farm now owned by Mr. Israel Braeuchle, and situated about a mile north west of Elmira. Later the family removed to the farm now occupied by Mr. Karl Weber east of Elmira, then they lived a few years at Hawkesville after which they removed to Elmira where they lived with their son-in-law, Mr. M. Hemmerich where three years ago, Mr. Weber died. Ten children, all of whom are still living, had blessed the union of deceased and her husband, viz: Louis of Hawkesville, Caroline (Mrs. L. Sohmaermund), Karl and August of Woolwich Township, Philip of Berlin, Phillipina (Mrs. H. Hemmerich), Elizabeth (Mrs. Schraer), and Katie of Elmira, Daniel of Battleford, Sask., and Henry of Salt Lake City, Utah. Besides these, one brother, Mr. Charles Klinck, sr., three sisters, Mrs. A. Blatz, Mrs. P. Jansen and Mrs. Hy. Dunke, and thirty grandchildren survive her, to mourn the loss of a kind hearted active and provident mother and sister.

The funeral will be held today (Thursday) at 2 o'clock pm from the residence of Mr. M. Hemmerich to the Elmira Union Cemetery.

    Notes:

John Bramm was Berlin's first brickmaker, his factory being located on the land on which Zion United Church, Weber Street, was built. He started the factory in 1845, the year in which he came from Germany.

The bricks for wells, houses and stores were taken to their location by a team of oxen. 500 bricks sold for $3.75. In 1880 Bramm employed six men, their weekly wages totalling $40.

In 1898 Bramm purchased the Doering steam grist mill on Queen Street South and operated it with his sons. Hundreds of cords of wood were purchased from local farmers for the operation of the mill and brickyard. The Bramm brothers operated the mill until 1907 and it is, in 1972, the Kissner Milling Company.

Bramm was also a private banker, lending money at interest rates of 6 ½ to 7%.

    __________________________

John Bramm, the first, came here in the early sixties, and opened a brickyard at 58 West Weber Street. Afterward he owned yards in other parts of the town. Mr. Bramm married Miss Elizabeth Wenzel and was the father of six children: Anna, Henry, John, George, Adam, and Marie Elizabeth. "Betty" was married to P. K. Weber, long city roadmaster. Harry once conducted the American hotel. For many years, John Jr.. and George had a brickyard in Wilmot Street. Next they bought the flour-mill in S. Queen Street, operating it till 1906, when they sold it to Irvin Master. The brothers were noted fishermen and hunters. After the sale of the mill, John lived in retirement. George, four years later, opened a coal-office at 568 S. Queen Street. In 1892 he married Miss Anna (Ash) Huehn, a sister of Christian Huehn, who was accountant for the Breithaupt Leather Co., and who built the Huehn Block in West King Street. Mrs. Bramm has lived at 560 S. Queen Street ever since her marriage. The district east of South Queen Street, between the mill and Schneider Avenue, was then given over to apple orchards and potato patches. Mr. Bramm continued the coal business until his death in 1928. Since then his daughter, Mrs. Kreiner, has managed the office.
