Blenheim Youth Killed In Crossing Accident near Drumbo - Henry Scott Riddell, aged 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Riddell, 11th concession of Blenheim, was almost instantly killed at 7.30 on Thursday night when the car he was driving was struck by a west-bound C.P.R. freight train just north of Drumbo where the railway crosses the Washington road. - Tragedy Seen by Friend - The victim of the accident was travelling alone in the old model car, but a friend, Frank Habermehl, of near Plattsville, who was following on a motorcycle, was an eyewitness. With members of the freight crew, he assisted in extricating his companion from the tangled wreckage, but he lived only a few moments. Coroner Dr. H. C. McCaul of Princeton was summoned and advised that an inquest was unnecessary. - Returning from Near Drumbo - Earlier in the evening, Habermehl had driven Riddell to a spot near Drumbo on the 7th concession of Blenheim, where Riddell's car had stalled the previous evening. Riddell succeeded in starting the vehicle and was returning home, followed by Habermehl on the motorcycle. The car was hurled across the track into a fence by the impact, clipping off several posts and completely wrecking the automobile. Riddell, who was employed in the Canada Sand Papers factory at Plattsville, was popular among the younger set of the community, and his tragic death came as a shock to the entire district. He was born in the West in 1933 and moved with the family to their farm in Blenheim some six year ago. Surviving, besides his parents, are two sisters, Constance and Henrietta, at home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Crane, in Alberta. Mrs. Ivan R. Hall, Mrs. I. J. Campbell and Mrs. William Ritchie, of this community, are aunts of the youth. - The Funeral - The funeral took place from the family residence on Saturday, with Rev. Gordon Kaiser of Plattsville officiating. Interment was made In Ayr cemetery. The pallbearers were: Frank Habermehl, Al Ableson, Glen Hofstetter, George Paulnitz, Douglas Poll and Ray Dougherty.
