    W. J. McRuer Passes

    William J. McRuer, Piper Street, Ayr, died in Willett Hospital, Paris on Saturday. He was in his 80th year. He was born in South Dumfries Township, a son of the late William McRuer and Elizabeth Gillam. He farmed all his life in the township, south of Ayr, prior to moving to the village two and one-half years ago. Mr. McRuer had been an active member of Knox United Church, Ayr. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Cochrane; a daughter, Mrs. John Dorothy Henderson, RR 3, Ayr; a grandson, Jeffrey Henderson; and a brother, Robert McRuer, RR 3, Ayr. Mr. McRuer was predeceased by three sisters, Mrs. Andrew (Rachel McRae, Mrs. Wylie Jessie Guthrie; Mrs. Morton Elizabeth Hall. Funeral service was conducted Monday from the William Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, by Rev. D. E. Willis of Knox United Church. Ayr. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harvey Brown, Robert Perry. Keith Hall, Cordon McRuer, Douglas Hall and Neil McRae.

    Mrs. William J. McRuer Mrs. William J. McRuer of RR 3, Ayr, passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, Brantford, on Tuesday, February 14th. She was in her 85th year. The former Dora Cochrane, she was born in Elma Township, a daughter of the late John Cochrane and Isabel Deans. The family moved from Elma Township to Keglane, RR 2, Paris. Upon marriage to William McRuer, the couple took up residence on his farm, Ayr-Paris Road, RR 3, Ayr. Mrs. McRuer was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Predeceased by her husband in 1970, a brother Deans and sister Mrs. Isabel Hall. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, John and Dorothy Henderson; grandchildren Jeff and Beth, all of RR 3, Ayr; and three brothers Ernest of Brantford, Scott of Keglane, RR 2, Paris and Donald of Paris. Rested at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, where funeral service was conducted on Saturday afternoon. Rev. George Saunders of Knox United Church. Ayr, of ficiated. Interment in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brian, Bruce and Irvin Cochrane, Keith Hall, Dale Rutledge and Gordon McRuer

    Death Claims Prominent South Dumfries Farmer

    The death occurred on Saturday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Morton Hall, Blenheim township, of William McRuer, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of South Dumfries, aged exactly 77 years, his demise having occurred on his birthday. He was born at Lachute, Quebec, and when a lad of eleven came to Ayr with his family and settled on a farm one-half mile west of the White School. The family was induced to remove to this section on account of an uncle of the deceased, Rev. Duncan McRuer, pastor of Knox Church, being located here. Deceased was married in 1882 to Elizabeth Gillow of Norwich, who predeceased him in 1919. He was a lifelong and valued member of Knox United Church and was a member of the Session for many years. He is survived by the following two sons and two daughters: William J., Robert A., Mrs. Wyllie Guthrie and Mrs. Morton Hall.

    Passing of Mrs. Wm. McRuer - Here and there throughout the country that terrible scourge, the Spanish Influenza, is still claiming its victims. On Tuesday morning another well-known and highly esteemed resident of this community, in the person of Mrs. William McRuer, was called after about ten days illness. The death took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wyllie Guthrie, near Paris. While nursing the "flu" patients in the family, both at home and at Mr. Guthrie's, she contracted the disease, but was thought to be recovering when a relapse set in and in her run-down condition she was unable to rally. The deceased was a very estimable woman, and a wide circle of friends will sincerely regret her demise. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Gilliam. She was born in North Norwich tp., Oxford County, over 61 years ago, and was married on April 5, 1882. She was a member of Knox United Church in Ayr and a worker in church organizations. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters and two sons, viz.: Mrs. (Rev.) Andrew McRae, Gobles; Mrs. W. Guthrie, Paris; Mrs. Morton Hall, Blenheim; Wm. John and Robt. Alex, at home. The sympathy of the community goes out to the sorely bereaved husband and family. The funeral takes place from her late residence, lot 31, con. 5, South Dumfries, today (Thursday), at 2:30 p.m., to the Ayr Cemetery.

    Death of Mrs. McRuer - The death took place in South Dumfries on Wednesday, 21st, of an estimable early settler, in the person of Mrs. John McRuer, at the age of 70, years. Deceased, whose maiden name was Janet Drew, was born at La Chute, Quebec, and came to South Dumfries in 1866. She was a consistent member of Knox church, Ayr, and highly respected wherever known. Her husband and three sons and a daughter survive, one son, James having died 18 years ago. The living children are John in Blenheim, Willian in South Dumfries, Duncan, and Mrs. Janet Kingsburgh, the latter in Ayr. The funeral takes place tomorrow (Friday) afternoon.
