    ______________

Menno H. Hallmann, Warden of the County of Waterloo, died on Sunday in his residence near Roseville. He was stricken by influenza in the autumn of 1898 and had been in poor health ever since. He was born May 15, 1844, was one of the best-known farmers in the County and was very involved with the cattle trade. For several years, he had been a member of the County Council, and a year ago, was named Warden, an office he very seldom exercized, because of his illness. His widow is a sister of Mr. S. Groff of Berlin. She, as well as three sons and two daughters, survive him. The burial took place yesterday, on Wednesday, at the Hallmann Cemetery near Roseville. The news of Mr. Hallmann's death reached Roseville on Sunday at the hour when the funeral service for Daniel D. Knechtel, another respected citizen of the area, was taking place.

    M. HALLMAN.

A short distance further east down the road, and we come to the home of the above named gentleman. Mr. Hallman has lived here nearly all his life, and has for a number of years been one of the most extensive cattle buyers in North Dumfries. He is also a Justice of the Peace and a member of the county council, and his constituents look upon him as one of the honorable and worthy members of that body. He buys thousands of cattle annually, many of which he fattens and fits for the English market, and at the time of my visit he had thirty-four head of fine animals on band. His farm of 350 acres can not be surpassed by any other of like extent in the Dominion. Mr. Hallman is seldom found at home during the day, being either on the road buying cattle or attending to his official duties as member of the county council. He is a very busy man 365 days in the year.

Across the way on another part of the farm lives his son, E. J. Hallman, also a practical young farmer. This farm is also noted for its fine horses, and while on the latter place I was shown a handsome beast, "Dash wood," a two-year-old, and a pacer from Billy Clay, the dam having a record of 2:22 On this farm an average of 1,500 bushels of wheat annually are raised. Both Mr. Hallman and his son are members of the Farmer's Institute. They take a deep interest in any subject that has for its purpose the maintenance of a practical system of farming and one that has a tendency to encourage the farming community in general. That they are amply capable of offering valuable suggestions on farming will convince the skeptic that it is the case if he will make a personal inspection of their large and well managed estate.
