Funeral service will be held at the Plattsville United Church on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 11am. Spring Interment in Ayr Cemetery.     David Hall

    David Hall, of Plattsville, died suddenly at Woodstock hospital on Sunday. He was 75.

    Born at RR 4, Bright, on the farm now occupied by his son Donald, Mr. Hall moved to his new home in Plattsville 11 years ago after completing 55 years as a farmer and cattle drover.

    Mr. Hall was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hall.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Manson, whom he married in Ayr 49 years ago; two sons, Hugh and Donald, both of RR 4, Bright; a sister, Mrs. David (Margaret) McDonald of New Dundee and nine grandchildren.

    Funeral service was conducted at the Glendinning Funeral Home on Tuesday, Rev. D E. Willis of Knox United Church officiating.

    Burial took place in Ayr Union Cemetery.

    Russell S. Abernethy

    Funeral service for the late Russell S. Abernethy, who passed away at his home in Ayr on Wednesday, May 28, was held from the T. Little and Son Funeral Home, Galt, on Saturday. The last rites were conducted by Rev. W. D. Goodger, assisted by Rev. J. W. Currie. During the service, Miss Bessie Renwick of Galt presided at the organ for a number of Mr. Abernethy's favorite selections, and Marlen Vincent sang, "I Shall Not Pass Again This Way."

    A large number of relatives and friends were present to pay last respects to a man who was outstanding in the textile selling field. Relatives attended from Toronto, Hamilton, Peterborough, Campbellford and Oshawa.

    The pallbearers were four nephews, Walter Bibby, E. L. Wellman, Douglas Trull, Gerald Lebrash, and two close friends, H. C. Springstead and Lemuel LeDrew, Ayr. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.

    Associated With Textile Trade

    The late Mr. Abernethy was born Campbellford, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Abernethy. Early in life he became interested in the textile trade, and was for a time in partnership with H. C. Springstead in the firm of Springstead Knitwear on Water street north, Galt, some 20 years ago. He later moved back to Campbellford, where he established the firm of Aber-Knit, which was well known throughout the province for its excellent product.

    Resided Here for 12 Years

    He removed with his wife and family to Ayr from Guelph about 12 years ago, and at the same time became associated with Bonnie Heather Knitwear, Hamilton, owned by William Little. During his employment with this company he travelled extensively through Northern Ontario, where he made many warm friends. He was possessed of a fine tenor voice, and was in constant demand as a soloist in the northern churches. He suffered a stroke two and a half years ago, and since that time had been confined to his home here. On Wednesday last he suffered another stroke while mowing the lawn and died shortly after. The late Mr. Abernethy was a member of Knox United Church, where he sang in the choir. Although associated with no fraternal organizations, he was an active member of the Commercial Travellers' Association of Canada. Surviving are his wife, the former Helen M. Trull of Toronto; two daughters, Shirley and Gloria, at home, and a son, Russell, also at home. Two sisters, Mrs. A. S. Wreeks of Newburgh, N.Y., and Mrs. R J. Bibby of Campbellford, also survive.

    Mrs. Andrew Hall

    The death occurred suddenly in Ayr on Monday of Jane Gemmell, widow of the late Andrew Hall, in her 74th year. Mrs. Hall was born in North Dumfries Township, on the farm now occupied by Dave Gemmell, and her parents were among the early pioneers of this section. After her marriage she removed to her husband's farm, on the 13th Concession of Blenheim, where they resided for many years, removing to Ayr about eleven years ago. She was a life-long, faithful member of Knox United Church, and was much interested in the work of the various women's organizations of the congregation. Deceased was a lady of many fine qualities and will be greatly missed by numerous friends and relatives in the community. Her husband predeceased her 1-1/2 years ago. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. L. Robson, Ayr, and the following six children: Miss Jessie R. Hall, at home; Mrs. A. J. Wright, Montreal; Mrs. David McDonald, New Dundee; Morton and Dave Hall, Blenheim, and Ray Hall, Galt. The funeral took place to the Ayr Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.

    William Manson - Ayr

    William Manson 70, well-known resident of this district and manager of the Ayr Rural Telephone Company, died early Monday at the Galt Hospital. He underwent an operation four weeks ago. Mr. Manson was a life-long resident of this district. He was born on the Kenneth McKenzie farm on the 10th concession of Blenheim, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Manson. Both his parents were born in this country of pioneer parents. He was married to Elizabeth Gourlay in 1885. Following his marriage he lived on the 7th concession of Blenheim for one year and then moved to the farm now owned by Earl Sharpe, south of the village. He lived there for 32 years. Twenty-one years ago Mr. Manson came to Ayr where he occupied a prominent place, ever since in civic life. He was one of the founders of the Ayr Rural Telephone Company 30 years ago. He was one of the men active in the establishment of rural mail service in this district. He was the first mail carrier on R.R. 3, Ayr, and for the past ten years he had been on R.R. 1, Ayr. Mr. Manson was a councillor for three years and a director of the Ayr Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 14 years. Surviving are his widow, and four daughters.

    William Manson Passes

    Following an operation some four weeks ago, the death occurred in Galt Hospital on Monday of William Manson, age 77 years. He was born on the farm now owned by Kenneth McKenzie, 10th concession of Blenheim, being the eldest son of Adam Manson and Mary Guthrie, natives of Scotland. He was married March 18, 1885, to Elizabeth Gourlay, second daughter of Andrew and Jane Gourlay. Rev. Dr. John Thomson, minister of Knox Church, Ayr, was the officiating clergyman. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 18, 1935. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Manson lived on the 7th concession of Blenheim for one year. They then moved to the farm now owned by Erie Sharp, where they resided for 32 years, retiring to Ayr 21 years ago. He was the first mail carrier on R.R. 3, Ayr, and for the past 10 years he was courier on RR 1. He was manager of the Ayr Rural Company for 29 years. He was a member of Dolman Lodge, IOOF, serving at different periods as Noble Grand and District Deputy Grand Master. Mr. Manson was a member of Knox United Church and Parks Committee and a director of the Ayr Cemetery Company and Ayr Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was also a member of Ayr Council for a three year term. In all, Mr. Manson had truly led an active and useful life, in which he gave freely of his time and talents to the community. Besides his widow, he is survived by four daughters: Mrs. David Hall, Blenheim Twp.; Mrs. S. D. Rendall, Toronto; Mrs. E. F. Cuthbertson, Oshawa, and Mrs. R. B. Hill, Toronto; and two brothers, James of Ayr and David of Inglewood, Calif. He was predeceased by a son, Wyllie, and a daughter, Bessie W. Manson. The funeral took place from Knox United Church this (Wed.) afternoon following a short private service at his late residence. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.
