    Death of David Brown

Oldest Native-Born Resident Passes in His 88th Year

The death occurred in Galt Hospital on Saturday morning of David Brown, oldest native-born resident of this community, in his 88th year. Mr. Brown was removed to the hospital for treatment in September of last year, his death resulting from pneumonia which he contracted a day or so prior to his demise. Deceased was born on Nov. 13, 1849, on the 11th concession of Blenheim, son of David Brown and Isabella Lillico, original settlers from Scotland. There were twelve children in the family, which was one of the most prominent in this locality. On April 6, 1883, he commenced farming for himself on the farm now occupied by Leslie McDonald, 10th concession of Blenheim, where he remained for a period of almost half a century, removing to Ayr on June 17, 1931. Mr. Brown devoted much of his time to furthering the interests of the church in this community. He was ordained to the eldership of Knox Church on the 27th day of July, 1879, along with the late David Goldie and John Edgar, under the ministry of the late Rev. Dr. John Thomson. He was a member of the session for a term of 58 years, a record which has seldom been equaled in the Province. During the following ten years much progress was made by the church, and in 1887 it was decided the old building was inadequate and a new church was necessary. Deceased, along with other members of the session and board of managers of that period, accepted a full share of the heavy labor thus involved, and the new place of worship was completed and opened for worship in 1888. His main interest, however, was centred in the Sabbath School, of which important, organization he was superintendent for about 30 years, resigning his duties in 1914 upon the occasion of the union of Stanley Street congregation with Knox. In addition to acting as superintendent of Knox Sunday School each Sabbath morning, he conducted Sunday school each Sabbath afternoon in the school house on the 10th concession of Blenheim. He was thus in control of the early religious tuition of hundreds of scholars who are now scattered far and wide throughout the continent. Mr. Brown never married, his household duties being under the capable direction of Miss Kate Teller for a period of 48 years. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Thomas M. Brown and Mrs. George Mitchell, Ayr; John J. Brown, South Dumfries; Mrs. John R. Hall and Miss Minnie Brown, Toronto.

    The Funeral

The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from Knox United Church to Ayr Cemetery, preceded by a private service for the family at his late residence on Hall street. A large number of friends, relatives and neighbors were present at, the church service, which was in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, assisted by Rev. Dr. Richard Davidson, Principal of Emmanuel College, Toronto. During the service, two favorite psalms were sung, led by the choir. The pallbearers were six nephews, as follows: David Brown, Pringle Brown, David Mitchell, David Reid, Leslie McDonald and Norman Hall. Among those present were relatives from Toronto, Brantford and Drumbo.
