Arthur R. Matthews

PRESTON, Arthur R. Matthews of 138 Kitchener Rd., died today in South Waterloo Hospital, Galt. He was 88. He was born in Princeton and lived in Paris and Brantford for a number of years. He came to Preston in 1912 and had lived there ever since. He operated a variety store in Preston until 1925, when he went to work for Butler Metal Products Ltd. He retired from Butler in 1954. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church and a member of the church choir for many years. He is survived by his wife, the former Leila Hepburn; by two sisters, Clare and Ruby, both of Brantford and a brother, Ralph of Toronto. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald, who was killed in action overseas during the Second World War. The body is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, Preston, where funeral and commital service will be conducted Monday, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Preston cemetery.

Formerly of 138 Kitchener Road, Cambridge (P), at the Golden Years Nursing Home, Tuesday, August 22, 1978, Leila Hepburn, beloved wife of the late Arthur Matthews. Predeceased by one son, Ronald, in the Second World War. Mrs. Matthews was born in Cambridge and lived here all her life. An active and faithful member of St. Paul's United Church, Preston, where she taught Sunday School most of her life and was a leader of the Golden Rule Bible Class. Mrs. Matthews is survived by one brother, Ernest Rendall, of Cambridge. Resting at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Rd., Cambridge (P), where funeral services will be conducted, Thursday, at 4 p.m. Interment in Park Lawn cemetery.

MRS. THOMAS HEPBURN

PRESTON, July 28. Mrs. Thomas Hepburn, 81, nee Emily Hinderer, passed away at her home early today. The deceased, in poor health for several years, had been confined to her home for the past year. Born in Preston, Mrs. Hepburn was practically a life-long resident of the municipality, being one of the town's oldest and most respected citizens. On March 5 this year, Mr. Hepburn and the late Mrs. Hepburn, were married 57 years, having been married in Preston on March 5, 1884, with Bev. George Haig of Hespeler, officiating. Mrs. Hepburn was a member of Knox Presbyterian church and the Ladies' Aid and Missionary Societies. For many years she was church organist. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Matthews, Preston and a grandson, Ronald Matthews, Preston. The remains will be at the Gordon Pass Funeral Home, 536 King street, until Tuesday, at 7 p.m., at which time removal will be made to the residence, 552 King street, where service will take place on Wednesday, at 2.30. Entombment will be in the mausoleum, Mount View cemetery, Galt.

Recipes:
TOMATO CATSUP.

To one-half bushel tomatoes: One quart best white wine vinegar, one pound salt, quarter pound black pepper, one ounce African cayenne, one ounce cloves, quarter ounce allspice, three small boxes mustard, six onions, two pounds brown sugar, one handful peach leaves. Boil three hours. When cool strain through a fine sieve and bottle.

FLANNEL BREAD

Two eggs, butter about the size of an egg, one pint milk, a little salt, two teaspoonfuls cream tartar, one teaspoonful soda, flour enough so that it will drop off spoon.

DUTCH APPLE PUDDING

One pint flour, one egg, two tablespoonfuls butter, two teaspoonfuls baking powder, one-half teaspoonful salt, three or four apples. Beat the egg light, add the milk to it, put salt and baking powder in flour, sift and then rub in the butter, pour in the milk and egg quickly; spread the dough about half an inch thick on a buttered baking pan, halve and core the apples, stick the pieces into the dough; sprinkle with two tablespoonfuls of sugar. Bake in a quick oven half an hour. Eat with sugar and cream.

SHAVINGS

Two eggs, butter the size of an egg, two egg shells sweet milk, flour enough to roll out; cut the size of a tea plate, cut this into strips, being careful not to cut the edges. Pick up each alternate strip and drop into boiling lard; fry a light yellow, sprinkle with sugar.

DEATH OF MRS. HINDERER -The death is announced of Mrs. Catherine Hinderer, of Preston, who died last Saturday, Sept. 10th, in her 82nd year. Mrs. Hinderer was the mother of Mrs. Geo. Randall, Mrs. Geo. Davidson and Miss Hattie Roos, of Waterloo. Their many friends will sympathize with them in their bereavement.

DEATH OF MR. WM. ROOS' MOTHER

Mrs Catharine Hinderson, of Preston, died on Saturday morning at 11.30 o'clock, after an illness of heart trouble extending over a period of two years. Deceased was born in Alsace, France, now Germany, in 1816, and was consequently 82 years of age. She came to America with her parents, when 14 years old and settled near Buffalo, living there until 1833 when she was married to her first husband, Mr Michael Roos, who predeceased, her some forty years ago. About 1833 she came to Preston to live and has resided there ever since, Those of the first family were George and Jacob Roos, who have been dead for some years, Mrs. George Randall, Waterloo, Mrs. Geo Davidson, Waterloo, and Mina Hattie Roos, Waterloo; Mrs. F E Erb, Berlin, and Mr William Roos, Berlin, still survive her. She was married the second time to Mr John Hinderson, who died some 33 years ago. Of the second family, Mrs. Thomas Hepburn, of Hespeler is the only child. The deceased lady had resided with her daughter, Mrs. Hepburn, for the past 14 years, and to whom together with the other members of the family, extend our heartfelt sympathy in this, their hour of trial and sorrow. The funeral took place Monday afternoon from her son-in-law's residence on King st to the Preston Cemetery for burial. The Rev Mr. Thomas was the officiating clergyman. The pallbearers were Mesars Peter Bernhardt, Fred Wureter, Charles Clare, John Steumpfle, C Erb and J D Wurster.
