A Short Sketch of Mr. J. G. Buchhaupt.

It was just one week ago Friday that Mr. J. G. Buchhaupt the popular chairman of the Berlin Public School Board celebrated the 25th anniversary of his wedding, his fellow members of the Board making it the occasion of a presentation of a handsome silver water set to him and his good wife. Mr. Buchhaupt affords us a striking example of what can be accomplished by persevering industry.

Mr. Buchhaupt was born in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany, emmigrating alone to Canada when a lad of fourteen years. He spent some years working as a mason and then entered a furniture factory in Walkerton, where by rigid economy he managed to lay aside sufficient of his earnings to enable him to take a half interest in a small German weekly newspaper, which he, in company with the late Casper Hett started in 1886 under the name of the "Freie Presse." He was only at the newspaper business a short time however when he decided to open a shoe shore on King St., in the present Weseloh stand. Here he carried on business with marked success for ten years, selling out to Mr. Weseloh a few years ago, to engage in a manufacturing business, but from this he was compelled to retire on account of ill health. Naturally a gentleman of his disposition and temperament could not remain long inactive and he has since opened up another shoe shore on Frederick street where he is doing a good business, Mr. Buchhaupt has been in public life only a few years but in that time has occupied the highest positions in the gift, of his fellow citizens. He has been councillor and for seven years a member of the School Board, being elected chairman at the beginning of the present year. It was mainly through his efforts and influence some years ago that it was decided to hold the election for school. trustees at the same time as the annual. municipal elections thereby effecting a considerable saving to the town.
