Musselman, Abner, son of the late George Musselman, was born near St. Jacobs, Ont., June 23, 1900; passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home near Elmira, Ont., on Nov. 14, 1956; aged 56 y. 4 m. 22 d. On May 9, 1925, he was married to Gladys Burkhart, who survives. Also surviving are a son (Marshall, at home), a daughter (Erla-Mrs. Mervin Bauman, St. Jacobs), a brother (George, Floradale, Ont.), 2 sisters (Salome-Mrs. Angus Martin, New Hamburg, Ont., and Mrs. Edna Francis, Kitchener), and one grandchild. He accepted Christ in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church of which he was a faithful member until the Lord called him home. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Church on Nov. 17 in charge of Roy S. Koch, assisted by Jesse b. Martin, with burial in the St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.

Musselman. - George I. Musselman was born July 12, 1873; died Nov. 12, 1931; aged 58 y. 4 m. On Jan. 5, 1896 he was married to Hannah Good who died March 25, 1919. This union was blessed with 6 children - 4 sons and 2 daughters. Two sons preceded him in death. He was later married to Malinda Bauman, who with 4 children, 4 grandchildren, 4 brothers and 2 sisters, remain to mourn the departure of one who will be greatly missed in the home, the neighborhood and the church. He united with the Mennonite Church in his youth and remained true to the end. For many years he was one of the trustees. Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 15, 1931, conducted by Oliver Snider, at the home and at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church by Jonas Snider and Moses M. Brubacher. Texts, Matt. 24: 44; Ecel. 12: 5.

Musselman. - Hannah, only child of Peter and Veronica (Weber) Good, was born Dec. 21, 1874; died Mar. 25, 1919; aged 44 y. 3 m. 4 d. She lived in matrimony with Geo. L. Musselman, which union was blessed with four sons and two daughters. Two sons preceded her to the spirit world. She joined the Mennonite Church in early youth and lived a quiet, peaceable, and consistent Christian life to the end. She leaves a sorrowing husband, two sons, two daughters, an aged mother and many relatives and friends. It is a great loss to the family, and also to the church. She was resigned to the Lord's will, and we look forward to a happy reunion where sorrow and sighing will be no more. Funeral services Mar. 28 conducted by Abr. Gingrich and Moses Brubacher at the Martin meeting house, buried in adjoining cemetery.

Musselman, "The two old pioneer settlers of this numerous family were David and Frederick who were no relatives to each other. They came to Canada in 1819 and settled in Waterloo County. The former, Mr. David Musselman settled in Woolwich Township, near Conestogo, on the farm now possessed by David Koch, while Frederick Musselman settled on the farm known as Rev. David Musselman, "was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was born April 18th, 1799, and was married to Esther, daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, August 29th, 1803, and died July 31st, 1872. He died October 25th, 1870. To them was born a family of twelve children".

All lands in the early days was in the hands of large holders. Where the village now standing was part of a large holding belonging to David Musselman who himself lived on the western side of the village[Conestogo]. It was this man Musselman who started the wheels of Conestogo running by beginning the very important business of flour milling. This was urgent owing to the extreme distance that settlers had to hand for their supplies as all these were brought in on horseback from Dundas.

The Milling Industry

In 1845 the flour mill was built, also a saw mill, both run by waterpower, obtained from the waters of the Conestogo River diverted to these plants thru a raceway nearly a mile in length, the building of which was a colossal piece of work.

Mr. Musselman did not continue long as a miller, for in 1850 he sold the saw and grist mill with the property belonging to them to Henry Snider who conducted both for some years. The saw mill was finally abandoned and the mill taken away. More time was devoted to the flour mill which had attained wonderful proportions so much so that a new building on a far larger scale was put up equipped with more machinery.

About this time it was a common occurrence for farmers to come 40 and 45 miles with their wheat, so that very often from 20 to 30 teams stood waiting at this mill for their chance to unload. After a very successful term, Mr. Snider turned over his interests here to one of his sons Menno who remained at the head until about 1916. During this time he suffered reverses and a severe fire in 1904 wiped out the mill with its contents together with the storeroom for wheat all of which was lost.

CONESTOGA

A pioneer named David Musselman is credited with having founded Conestoga. He first purchased 700 acres of forest in the vicinity. In 1830 he bought a parcel of land where the village stands from Abram Martin. It was watered by the Conestoga River and Spring Creek, on which he built a sawmill. In 1844 he built a dam across the Conestoga River and erected another sawmill and a flourmill. A hamlet sprang up. Among the first buyers of lots in Musselman's survey were: John Miller, Adam Heller, Stephen Washburn, John B. Eby, Christian Stuernagel, James Merrilees, H. von Trilera, Theodore Spetz, Henry Snider, Jacob Grosz, Philip Oswald, Joseph S. Weaver, George Davidson, Peter Eby, S. B. Eby, Peter Buchanan, Michael Oswald, Jacob Kuntz, Charles Hendry, Solomon Kaufman, and Jacob Lippert.

After their advent a cooper shop, blacksmithshop, a store, an hotel, and a post office followed. In time a brickyard, a school, and a church were added, and the place was called Musselman's Mills. Later Perine Brothers built a flaxmill on Spring Creek, while on the same stream Goodworth & Sills constructed a paint mill.

The hamlet was known as Musselman's Mills until 1852, when it was renamed Conestoga, after the Conestoga River or the town of Conestoga in Lancaster County, Pa., from which county many of the pioneers had come. David Musselman operated his mills until 1856 and then sold them to Henry Snider, who carried on the milling till his death in 1885. His executors sold the mills to Menno Snider, who operated the flourmill until his own death in 1916. During his closing years he was assisted by his son Walter J. Snider, who succeeded to the property. Walter Snider afterward purchased the flour-mill at St. Jacobs from W. W. Snider and operated the two mills as the Snider Flour Milling Company, Limited. After his decease, his son Russell became head of the industries..

Lichty. - On the 17th of June 1903, in Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., George Lichty, aged 84 Y., 1 M. Buried on the 19th at the Snyder M. H. Funeral services by Enoch Bowman at the house, and by Daniel Wismer and Joseph Gingerich at the M. H. He leaves one son, two daughters, and many grandchildren, besides two sisters and other relatives, to mourn their loss.

GEORGE LICHTY.

Go to the old Lichty homestead on a pleasant day and you will invariably find this veteran of pioneer days moving about outside. He is now in the seventy-ninth year of his age and is yet physically strong, but has also retired from active farm work. He is of Swiss extraction, his grandparents having emigrated from Switzerland to Pennsylvania some time prior to 1760 He was the first of a family of ten children, first seeing the light on May 10, 1819. He has always worked on the farm and it is likely that he will end his days on the farm where he has labored so many years. He was married in 1811 and is the father of five children. His son in-law, Henry M. Martin, who was married to the daughter Nancy, lives in an adjoining portion of the old homestead and has charge of the farm. The subject of this sketch came to this section from Pennsylvania with his parents in 1822, they being among the first families to settle here. The present farm contains 182 acres and is in a fine state of cultivation. Mr. Martin the son-in-law, is a son of the late Henry Martin, who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 16, 1794, and died June 8, 1853. Selina, the daughter of the former, is married to Ephraim Betzner, who also lives at the old homestead, all live in harmony and peace together, each one doing his or her share towards making the work on a large farm an easy task, a feature not always the case where three families are domiciled beneath one roof. The old gentleman says he has used tobacco since he was twenty-one years of age, but has been temperate so far as alcobolic stimulants are concerned. Adjoining the Lichty estate is the fine farm of Solomon Koch.

Daniel Good, "son of Peter and Elizabeth (Schowalter) Good, was born near Muddy Creek, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, June 30 1798. He left Pennsylvania in 1826 and came to Canada, arriving in Waterloo in May of the same year. He was a cabinet maker by trade and must have been a number one mechanic as all his works are executed in the most skilful manner. At his arrival here he made his home with old John Lichty who then resided in Waterloo, later on he had his home with Jacob S. Shoemaker. On January 7th, 1829, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born December 27th, 1808, and is still quite smart and healthy for a person of her age. She has her home with her daughter, Elizabeth. After their marriage they moved on their farm in Woolwich Township, near the Martin Mennonite Meeting House. The farm is now owned by Elias Martin. Here they resided until his death which took place May 24th, 1881. They had a family of sixteen children"

Isaac Weber," the eldest son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Cressman) Weber, was born January 30th, 1816. In 1838 he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Bechtel) Eby. She was born January 26th, 1820. Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm now possessed by Eli Horst, situated on the line between Woolwich and Waterloo Townships, about one-half mile east of the Martin Mennonite Meeting House. Here they resided until their deaths. He died October 14th, 1889, and she died June 19th, 1889. They had a family of seven children"
