    Notes:

His most difficult and troublesome undertaking was the payment of the debt for the new church. At every step he had to listen to all the mistakes, real and imaginary, of his predecessors. At that time the years of bad harvests and poor markets had not quite passed. However, perseverance and his unruffled good nature gradually overcame all difficulties. On his rounds for subscriptions to the new church Father Foerster came to Martin Goetz, a good man, who subscribed $100.00 without coaxing. This man said that he had subscribed $4.00 to the first church built in 1847-48, but that the payment caused him no end of worry and work to get the $4.00, while the $100.00 subscribed now would not trouble him. In those early days cash was extremely scarce, because trade was almost entirely carried on by barter.

    Obituary - Martin Goetz

After lengthy suffering from consumption, Martin Goetz died on November 8th in Woolwich at age of 68 years, 2 months and 25 days. He was born in Sufflenheim in Alsace, lost his mother when he was 3 years of age, and his father when he was 9 years old. A friend took the orphaned child in and provided him with some education. At the age of 15, he left this place, because it didn't please him and wandered around the world alone. At the age of 20, he married a girl of the same age and emigrated to America with his wife. He came to Canada and settled in Woolwich, in the forest 2 miles east of the spot where West Montrose is now located. That was in the autumn of 1847. He constructed a log hut, where he spent the winter. Since he had brought only a small amount of money with him, he soon lacked food and when spring arrived, he was forced to seek help. He found work with the Old Mennonites in and around Bloomingdale, and had employment with them the entire summer.

Monday mornings he left his cabin and Saturday evenings he went home with a load of food which he had to carry 7 or 8 miles.

He and one of his neighbours carried the first plough which they used 6 miles on their shoulders to the place, because there still wasn't any road through the forest. Gradually, things began to go better. When he had been on the land for 6 years, however, his wife died and left behind 4 children, which, of course, was a hard blow for him. He married for a second time and had 9 children from this marriage.

He took a great interest in churches and schools and whenever there was anything that needed to be done in these areas, he was always called upon for advice. He was a councillor in his church for over 20 years and only resigned from the office recently. For 25 years, he was Justice of the Peace. He is survived by his second wife and 7 children (4 sons and 3 daughters), as well as 47 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Six children have pre-deceased him. The two oldest sons, Martin & Joseph, have large farms in Arthur township; Joseph is a member of the township council; the third son has a wagon-building business in Nichol township; the youngest brother is on the old homestead. The oldest sister is in West Branch, Michigan, where her husband, Stephan Wieges, has a butcher and grocery shop.

The funeral took place on November 11th, his name day, in New Germany, and was attended by a large crowd of mourners. Very Reverend Father Foerster conducted a solemn requiem mass and touching sermon in which he stressed the exemplary life and zealous works of the deceased. May he rest in peace!
