    Notes:

    Death of Wyllie Manson

Long ago we had exhausted the triple adjective phrase sad, sadder, saddest, in describing the inroads of Influenza and still those pathetic words continue to apply with increased significance.

Of all the sad cases in this community which we have been called upon to report in connection with the prevailing epidemic, perhaps the saddest so far occurred on Saturday, when a young newly married man in the person of Adam Wyllie Manson, who had just entered upon the duties and responsibilities of citizenship, was snatched from a sphere of usefulness in which he gave promise of more than average aptitude.

Though his case was viewed with alarm from the first, the outcome was in the nature of a shock, and the deepest sympathy of the entire community goes out to the disconsolate bride, father, mother and sisters.

Deceased was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Manson of Ayr, who had just transferred their homestead to Wyllie and moved into town. Under the circumstances his death creates a situation that will be difficult to adjust. What the solution will be time alone will determine.

Wyllie Manson, who was in his 27th year, was born on the farm on which he died. Two months before his death he married Miss Ella Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Marshall.

From his boyhood the deceased was prominent in Sabbath school work, and at the time of his death was sec.-Treas. Of Knox United Sunday school, and was also an enthusiastic worker in other departments of the Church of which he was a consistent member. He was interested in agriculture and prominent n the Junior Farmers' club. In athletic sports he gave most attention to bowling and hockey.

Besides his wife, father and mother, the deceased is survived by five sisters. They are - Gladys, teacher at Plattsville, (who is ill with "Flu"), Bessie, St. Catharine's, Jean, Mary, Edna, and Stella, at home. The funeral, which took place to the Ayr cemetery on Monday, was well attended, and a wealth of beautiful flowers attested the esteem in which the deceased was held. Rev. J.J. Brown conducted the service, assisted by Rev. D. (?), Toronto, formerly pastor of Stanley St. Church, Ayr. The pallbearers were Messrs. Rolland Maeder, Filshie Cuthbertson, John Edgar, Wm. Marshall, David Hall and Alex Gourlay.

    Passing of a Great Grandmother

On Thursday last there passed to her reward one of the pioneer settlers of this district in the person of Mrs. Alex. Scott of Blenheim, who had attained the ripe age of 90 years. The deceased, whose maiden name was Elspeth Oliver, was born in Scotland and came to Canada at the age of 11, settling with her parents on the Old Oliver farm just east of the village. Ayr was then a mere hamlet and the whole countryside was a little better than a howling wilderness. The changes she witnessed during 80 years residence in a young and constantly developing country can possibly be better imagined than described. Suffice it that she was not only an eyewitness but a participant in the development of the country and had the honor of living to be a great-grandmother. In early womanhood she was united in marriage with the late Alex Scott, who predeceased her 11 years, at the age of 90. To them four sons and three daughters were born, all of whom survive, viz., Mrs. Geo. Henderson, San Francisco, Cali.; George and James, South Dumfries; William and Mrs. Stephen Marshall, Blenheim; Mrs. E. Elkington, Paris, and Thomas O., Ayr. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Peter Hope, Ayr, and Mrs. Geo. Hope, Brantford. Two brothers and a sister predeceased her - Thomas of Manitoba, William of Ayr and Mrs. Geo. Ausbrook of Paris Plains. The funeral took place on Sunday, interment being made in the Ayr cemetery. Deceased was a member of Stanley-st. church, Ayr, and the services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Anderson, assisted by Rev. .Mr. Grant and Dr. Thomson. The pallbearers were grandchildren - viz., E. R. Scott, Galt; Wm. Marshall, Blenheim; Bert Scott and Scotty Elkington, Paris; Leslie Kelly, Paris Plains, and John McGill, Burford.
