In 1856 the Central School was erected on the site between Frederick and Lancaster streets, before referred to as the joint property of the Grammar and Common School Boards. The County Council made a grant of 50 ($200) to the Common School Board towards the completing of the building. The newly elected members of the Board this year, to take the places of two retiring, were Mr. John A. Mackie, who remained on the Board for 24 years, and was chairman a great portion of the time; and Mr. Henry S. Huber, who was a member and secretary-treasurer for the next 17 years. Mr. David Knox was the last principal in the old Frederick schools.

1857 to 1871.
The next year (1857), in January, the new Central School was opened. Of the two retiring trustees one was re-elected and the place of the Other was taken by Mr. A. J. Peterson, thereafter a trustee for 20 years. The first teachers in the Central were Mr. Alexander Young, principal, salary 150 ($600) per annum; Mr. John Strang, salary 90 (360) per annum; Miss Elizabeth Shoemaker, and before the end of the year, Miss Eliza Wait (now Mrs. W. F. Chapman, Toronto). The same year the Grammar School was removed from the old printing office on King street into an upstairs room in the Central School building.

Death of Mr. Alex Young

We regret to state that the illness under which this gentleman suffered for the past six weeks terminated in his death on Saturday afternoon last. About three weeks ago it was thought Mr. Young had passed the crisis of his disease and would recover; but a relapse set in and he slowly sank to his long rest.

Mr. Young's name has long been a "household word" in this County. Coming to Dumfries with his parents when a mere lad, he early developed a love for study, and at one time thought seriously of entering the Ministry. He afterwards, however, relinquished this long cherished idea, and adopted teaching at his profession. In this he was eminently successful. He taught for the first few terms in Dumfries, afterwards removing to Galt, where he in the first place established a private school in the large frame house on South Water Street, opposite the residence of Mr. Thos. Sparrow - then known as "Isaac Sours' Chapel." Very shortly after this he accepted charge of the town school and in this capacity he taught for many years. He afterwards, removed to Berlin, where he had been offered the Principalship of the Central School, which position he occupied for a number of years with great acceptance. Seeing, as he then thought, an opportunity to better his position, he entered into the flax business at St. Thomas in company with Mr. Perine; but after several years of hard struggling, the enterprise proved a failure, and Mr. Young returned to Berlin and again assume his old position as Principal of the Central School in that town. This position he continued to occupy until the new regulations of the Minister of Education, regarding the qualification of teachers, deprived him of his position. Mr. Young felt this a great hardship; but his many friends rallied around him and after some delay secured him a position under the Weights and Measures Act. This position he held up to the time of his death; and it is not too much to say that the Government never had a more thoroughly honest or diligent officer or one in whom more implicit reliance could be placed.

The deceased was engaged in his official duties in the County of Brant when, not feeling well, he thought he would take a run up to Galt for a change. Arriving here he went to the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. William Graham; but the hope that he would be able to throw off his illness proved fallacious, and it developed into typhoid fever. Under this he eventually sank and the funeral ? Monday was attended by many friends from Berlin, Galt and surrounding places.

Mr. Young married early in life, his wife being Miss Annie Keachie. She still survives him, and throughout his long illness proved a helpmate indeed. Two children, Mrs. H.A. Jackson and Mrs. Wm. A. Young, both now of Montreal, ? left to mourn his loss. Mr. Young was aged 62 years.

DIED SUDDENLY IN TORONTO
A number of older residents of Galt assembled at the CPR station on Monday afternoon last to meet the 4: 20 train from Toronto, on which were brought the remains of Mrs. Alex Young, widow of the late Alex Young, for many years school-teacher in Galt, but more lately of Berlin and Montreal. The deceased lady was a daughter of the late Hugh Keachie, of Galt, her surviving sisters being Mrs. Brodie, of Ingersoll, and Mrs. Wm. Hespeler, of Winnipeg, with a brother, Duncan, living in Brantford. Mrs. Young for the past few years has been residing in Montreal, and was on her way west to pay a visit to her sister in Ingersoll. She remained over in Toronto to visit relations residing there, and while doing so was taken ill. From the first her illness assumed a serious turn, and on Friday evening she calmly passed away. The funeral took place at Galt on the afternoon mentioned, the remains being interred beside those of her husband in Mount View Cemetery.
