Hawkesville - It is our sad duty to record the death of one of Hawkesville's business men in the person of Mr. Levi Bricker. The deceased had been in the Galt Hospital for about five weeks having undergone an operation for cancer of the bowels. He died on Friday evening at six o'clock. The funeral service was held here on Monday at 1 p. m. and the remains were taken to the Union Cemetry [sic], Elmira, for burial. He was 32 years, 2 months and 22 days old and leaves a widow, four brothers and three sisters to mourn the loss. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in the time of their bereavement. Many from here attended the funeral of Levi Bricker, Hawkesville. He was well known in St. Clements and highly respected and the his [sic] untimely death is deeply regretted here.

John Bricker," the youngest son of Peter and Elizabeth (Cress) Bricker, was born near the town of Waterloo, October 9th, 1825. In 1846 he was married to Sallie Wideman who died in 1857. In 1863 he married to Elizabeth, daughter of Ephraim and Susan (McMahon) Cress, She was born October 18th, 1829. Mr. Bricker's family consisted of eleven children, five of whom were born unto his first wife"

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Peter Bricker," the eldest son of John and Anna ( Erb) Bricker, was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, November 26th, 1793. In 1802 he came to Canada with his parents who settled near the present village of Blair. He was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Simon Cress, who settled in this county in 1806. She was born February 17th, 1792, and died November 14th, 1854. He died January 25th, 1856. After their marriage they moved on the farm known as young "Daniel Snyder's" farm, within the corporation of the town of Waterloo, now possessed by the descendants of John E. Brubacher. Here they resided for twenty-five years when they moved south of "Huron Road," Wilmot Township, where they resided for two or three years, then they purchased the beautiful farm situated on the township line between Wellesley and Woolwich, now in possession of their son, John. Here they resided until their death which took place as stated above. They had a family of six children"

John Bricker," the eldest son of Peter Bricker, was born December 28th, and died February 19th, 1854. He was married to Anna, daughter of Christian and Mary (Scherch) Erb. She was born December 11th, 1774, and died October 13th, 1866. In 1802 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, near the village of Blair where he died. After his death the mother had her home with her son David who resided near Roseville where she died. They had a family of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy and are buried at Blair. There were three Johns, the first died, aged nearly nine years; the second was born a few weeks after the decease of the first; and after second's decease they named a third one John."

A-1-29 John Bricker Snr.: Last Will and Testament of John Bricker, Sen. of North Dumfries, deceased.

…I, John Bricker, senr., of the Township of Dumfries…make and publish this my Last Will and Testament. (First) I will that my funeral expenses and all my other debts, if there shall be any, be paid out of my estate as soon as can be after my decease. I will that my beloved wife Nancy shall have to live in the house which we now occupy during her natural life, and my son David Bricker shall keep a cow for my wife Nancy during her life, which cow he shall in every respect keep in the same manner as he keeps his own cows. I also give and bequeath unto my wife during her life, all my household furniture which I may be possessed of at my decease and that my beloved wife Nancy Bricker, shall yearly and every year as long as she lives, have Twenty five pounds, and if my wife Nancy shall through sickness or otherwise happen to need more than twenty five pounds, then my Executors shall give her so much more as will suffice to keep her comfortable. I will that all the above-mentioned bequests to my said wife shall be instead of her lawful Dower. And it is my will that the real and person property together with the five hundred dollars, together with all I have heretofore given and paid to my eldest son Peter Bricker, shall be taken, and the same really is, the whole share of my said son Peter Bricker's heirship by me bequeathed to him out of my real and personal estate. And it shall be considered, and it is so truly, that my said son Peter Bricker is, by his having receiv'd from me as before said, amply remunerated for which time he has worked for me, after he was twenty-one years of age. And I consider that my son David Bricker and my daughters Nancy and Susanna have their full share of heirship out of my real estate, in the land and their property which they have already received from me, for which reason I exclude them from any further share out of the same. I will that after the decease of myself and my wife, all the household furniture then belonging to my estate shall be equally divided between my three daughters, Mary, Magdalena and Lydia, except my Clock, which I have already given to my son David Bricker. I will that they residue of my real property of whatever kind or nature it may be, shall after the demise of myself and my wife be equally divided between my sons John and Abraham, and my daughters Mary, Magdalena and Lydia, share and share alike. Nevertheless I give, devise and bequeath all that legacy left to me by my brother Peter Bricker of Cumberland County, State of Pennsylvania, deceased, to be equally divided between my children now living likewise including my son Peter, and likewise the share that would have come to my daughter Nancy, if living shall be equally divided amongst all her children, share and share alike. I will that for the above legacy of my brother Peter Bricker, as said before, I have executed a power of Attorney to Wendell Bowman, Esq., and my son John Bricker to settle that part of my estate. And lastly I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my son John Bricker and Samuel B, Bowman to be the lawful executors.

In Wilmot, Waterloo Co., C. W, at the residence of Abraham Bricker, son of the deceased, on the 14th October, Nancy, wife of the late John Bricker, at the advanced age of 91 years, 10 months, and 2 days. She came from Cumberland Co., Pa., to Canada in the Spring of 1802, and lived here, respected by all, to the day of her death. She was a sister of Daniel and Jacob Erb, to whom the German Company Tract of Waterloo Township was deeded in 1865, also of Abraham Erb, the founder of Waterloo Village. She was buried on the 16th in the old burying-ground in the village of Blair. This is the oldest piece of ground selected for burying purposes in Waterloo, and she was the one who made the selection. Sixty-two years ago, while her husband was away to the States, one of her sons died, and as there was no place to bury the dead she went up to the hill, a little distance from where they were then living, and found an open little little(sic) place where she decided to bury her dead. She planted a tree at the foot of the little grave which tree is now about ten inches in diameter. She herself gave ground for a public cemetery, and for that reason wished to be buried there. Moses Bowman and Daniel Wismer officiated on the occasion. Only one or two are still living who came to Canada so early as the deceased.- Waterloo Chronicle

Simon Cress, "the progenitor of this family was a native of Pennsylvania, U. S., where he was born about the year 1764. In 1806 he and his wife and family moved to Canada and located temporarily near Preston, Ontario. A few months later they moved to where they resided for some years. In 1819 he purchased the lot now forming the farms of the late Absalom Martin, Peter Cress, Levi Cress, and others near St. Jacobs, Ontario. Here the old progenitor resided until his death. His family consisted of five children"

So far those mentioned have, of with the exception of Capt. Smith, been situated along the road which follows the general course of the river northward. There was only one other spot, so far as can be learned, where a settlement had been made up to the year 1825. Simon Cress and his wife, Rachel, with their two sons and two daughters, came to Waterloo along with Mr. Erb, in 1806. They settled on land upon part of which the village of St. Jacob's stands now. In doing this they followed the rule by going up the Conestogo river. Simon Cress died in October, 1863, and his wife twenty years before him. Those in their family were : Ephraim, the oldest ; Polly, who married John Beatty ; Jacob, died at Port Elgin, and Rachel, the wife of Elisha Hewitt. In the family of Ephraim Cress were: Simon ; Levi, now living retired in St. Jacob's ; John, also in St. Jacob's ; Elizabeth,,. Mrs. Bricker ; Polly, Mrs. John Whiteman ; Rachel, Mrs. Bernard Meyer.

A son of Jacob Cress, who died at, Port Elgin, is Peter Cress, living in St. Jacob's, and a daughter is Mrs. David Puttock, living at Blair, near Preston. Henry, son of Levi, is now on the old Cress farm at St. Jacob's.
