David Martin, "son of Abraham and Barbara (Oberholtzer) Martin, was born in East Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, March 16th, 1771. On May 4th, 1794 he was married to Maria, daughter of Christian Guth. She was born in the same township, January 26th, 1775. In 1820, they with their family of twelve children, moved to Canada. On June 6th of the same year they came to Waterloo, and on the 9th of the same month they settled on lot No. 65, German Company's Tract, Waterloo Township. The farm is now in possession of Joseph B. Martin. Many and almost indescribable were the hardships and sufferings of this family in making the journey from Pennsylvania to their new home in this county but no sooner had they fully rested themselves and seemed to enjoy their life in the wilds of Canada, when "King Death" came and claimed the mother of this happy family as his own. After suffering great pain for five days, caused by inflammation of the bowels, she died of mortification, July 5th, 1820. On June 13th, 1824, the father was married again to Catharine, daughter of Samuel Guth (now spelled Good) who was a brother to Christian Guth, father to his first wife. There was no family with second wife. He died September 6th, 1854. His second wife was born November 11th, 1777, and died November 14th, 1848, after an illness of a little more than two months. "
