Snider. -- Maylinda, daughter of George and Veronica Hallman, was born in Waterloo Co. , Ont. , May 1, 1896; died July2, 1936, at the General Hospital at Galt, Ont. , after an illness of five weeks. She was in her 41st year. At the age of 14 she confessed Christ as her personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church, being a member of the Blenheim congregation. She lived a consistent Christian life in all these years, having a desire to magnify the name of her Lord. her testimony was: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. " She was resigned to the will of the Lord in the last trying hours of her life, and expressed a desire to depart and to be with the Lord. On Dec. 25, 1918, she was united in marriage to Omar Snider of Waterloo, Ont. , which union was blest with 5 sons and 3 daughters. She was a devoted wife and mother, having always a deep concern for her family. She is sadly missed in the home, community, and congregation. She leaves her husband, 3 sons, and 3 daughters; also her mother, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 4 from their home in Wilmot Township and to the Blenheim Mennonite Church for services in charge of M. H. Shantz assisted by C. C. Cressman. Text, Phil. 1: 21. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

    "Mother was tired and weary,
    Weary with toil and with pain;
Put by her glasses and rocker,
She will not need them again.
    Into heaven's mansions she's entered,
    Never to sigh or to weep;
After short years with life's struggles
    Mother has fallen asleep."

    Notes:

Rev. George R. Schmidt "son of John and Catharine (Riehl) Schmidt, was born in Muhlhausen, Alsace, November 23rd, 1809, and died September 12th, 1882. His death was caused by the upsetting of his buggy, at the railway crossing a little east of Baden, from which he received injuries proving fatal a few hours after its happening. He had an older brother named John and a sister named Catharine. His parents suffered greatly during the wars of Napoleon I and again during the year 1817 when there was almost a total failure of crops in Europe and America, thus causing great scarcity of food for both man and beast. During these trials the father died. His death took place August, 1817. In 1819 the mother was married again to Jacob Linhart. After the old homestead which the father had erected was sold, the parents moved to a place called Bischols, some miles distant from their former home. The second union was blessed with four children, named Jacob, Margaret, Christian and Maria. On March 6th, 1828, they left the old country and emigrated to America and arrived at Buffalo, New York on May 6th of the same year. From Buffalo they came to Canada where the father rented a farm. The two sons, John and George, worked among the neighbors to earn money to assist their step-father. In January, 1829, these two sons with but 50 cents in their pockets, made a journey on foot over 100 miles. They came to Waterloo (their parents resided in Welland County, not very far from Buffalo) where John engaged himself to Jacob Schneider (farmer and miller at Waterloo) for one year and George engaged himself to Joseph Goldschmitt of Baden for 3 months at the rate of $8.00 per month. He worked on the saw mills situated where now the Baden woollen mills are. After being in the county for several months he returned home with his and his brother John's wages. This money was given to their parents. In October, 1829, he returned to Waterloo and engaged himself to Rev. Benjamin Eby for one year at the rate of $10.00 per month. Later on he and his brother John purchased lots Nos. 12 and 13, in the township of Wilmot, consisting of four hundred acres, of which they gave one hundred acres to their father. George was engaged in clearing land for various parties at the rate of $10.00 per acre. In August, 1831, he returned home where he was married on the 14th day of the same month to Salome Becker. After his marriage he again came to Waterloo and finished the "chops" he had commenced the previous spring. In October he and his brother John who had been in the services of Jacob Schneider for several years, returned home, George to fetch his wife and John to get married to the woman of his choice, namely, Margaret Roth who resided in Buffalo. This marriage took place November, 1831. In 1832 they all returned to their farms in Wilmot Township where the mother died in July, 1851, aged 68 years. Catharine, the only sister of George and John Schmidt, was born March 25th, 1814, and was married December 25th, 1835, to Martin Anthes. She has a family of five children, of whom three are still living. John was born November 1st, 1806, and died March 12th, 1882. He had a family of twelve children, of whom seven are still living. George was ordained minister of the church of his choice, the Mennonite, April 12th, 1840. He was a true and faithful worker for His Master. Many an eloquent sermon did he preach and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. It proved a great loss to the church to lose such an active and able worker as he was, but let us hope that our earthly loss may prove to be his eternal gain. He was married to Salome Becker who was born February 28th, 1811, and died November 21st, 1887. They had a family of thirteen children"

Died, on the 14th of September, near Baden, Waterloo Co., Ont., Pre. George R. Schmit, in the 73rd year of his age. He had been to the Post office to get his paper, and as he was ready to return, his horse became frightened by a passing train of cars, threw him out of the buggy against a fence, with such force that three of his ribs were broken, from the effect of which he died in about three hours. He was buried on the 17th, followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Services were held by M. Bowman at the house, and by J. Woolner, and Jacob Mensch (The latter from Montgomery Co., Pa.,) at the meeting house, from the text Heb. 13: 17. He leaves a sorrowing widow, four sons and five daughters to mourn his sudden departure.Bro. Smith was a zealous Christian, and an active laborer in the vineyard of the Lord. He was a man of forethought and decision of mind. When he preached, the gospel gave no uncertain sound. He was a bold, fearless speaker and one who carried his audience with him while at the same time his heart was filled with love toward all. He was one of these men who could not be driven about by every wind of doctrine, but amid all the overturnings and religious convulsions which characterized his day. Bro. Smith remained steadfast and faithful in his calling, and immoveable in his faith. In the death of Bro. Smith and Bro. Sherk, the church in Canada has lost two veterans in the cause of Christ, two pillars in the church, whose active and devoted labors will be long remembered. May their successors in their respective places, labor for the cause with the same devotion, the same zeal, and the church continue to prosper and be blessed.

    Schmitt, George R. (1809-1882)

George R. Schmitt: minister and farmer; born in 1809 in Mulhausen, Alsace to Lutheran parents. In 1828 he came with his parents and at least one sibling to North America, first living in Welland County, Ontario. In August 1831 he married Salome Becker and they settled on a farm near what became Baden, Ontario. One of his grandchildren was Jacob B. "J.B." Smith , Bible scholar and first president of Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg, VA. George R. Schmitt died in an accident on 14 September 1882.
Although of Lutheran heritage, it is said that George Schmitt worked for a time as a farm laborer for Bishop Benjamin Eby, and then embraced the Mennonite faith. For some years he was a farmer and schoolteacher. He was ordained as the first minister for the Shantz Mennonite Church congregation near Baden on 12 April 1840 or in February 1847; the date is uncertain because of conflicting evidence.
George Schmitt was apparently a remarkable orator; one biographical sketch said "his clear ringing tones, with 'silver-tongue' effect could readily be heard by overflow audiences which frequently greeted his public ministry." Others also referred to him as a "forceful" preacher. Because of his oratorical gifts he often spoke in Amish and Lutheran congregations in the area. During the U.S. Civil War, George Schmitt, together with David Sherk, made preaching visits through Pennsylvania and Virginia; and later he made a similar tour through the Central States.
Schmitt died as the result of an accident when in town to fetch a newspaper at the Baden post office. His horses became frightened by a passing train, and threw him from his buggy against a fence. He died of his injuries within three hours.
George R. Schmitt's major service occurred at a time when pastoral activity was not well documented. Nonetheless he had a ministry that extended far beyond his local community. Several times he participated in ministerial delegations from Ontario that sought to bring peace to other parts of the Mennonite Church that were in conflict. This role indicates his ability, and the stature he had within the church's leadership.

    Rsrch. Note:
Following: "The Trail Of The Conestoga" !

*Our pioneer ancestor,JACOB HECKENDORN journeyed to Canada from a depressed Pennsylvania in 1822, as a bachelor with other hardy, adventurous Mennonites travelling, some by horseback, some walking on foot and others by their covered wagons, known as 'the Conestoga Wagon', named after the locale in Pennsylvania where they were first built. They were hoping to find good rich, low cost farming land on which to settle and build their new farms. It would be out of the virgin forests along the banks of the Grand River in Waterloo County.

*It was here that young Jacob decided to 'set his roots' and purchased 224 acres of land located in the German Company Tract from Peter Eby in 1825. The farm lot, known as GCT31S (German Company Tract,Lot 31, south half) was located partly on what today is known as Fischer-Hallman Road in Waterloo, Ontario.

*Jacob and his young wife MARY MILLER, raised their seven children on this farm which in 1971, at the time of the publishing of "The Heckendorn Family History and Genealogy" book by Vera Hallman Hunsberger, was still standing. The home, famed for it's high narrow windows in the upstairs and it's large wooden frame barn on the west side of Hallman Road, would certainly be out of place with the commercial plaza now on the west corner and the suburban homes surrounding the area today.

*The David Eby Cemetery, located on the south-east corner of Erb Street West and Fischer-Hallman Road, contains several Heckendorn markers, some with their inscriptions wiped out by weather and time, but two are yet very readable. They are Joseph Heckendorn's and that of his wife, Elizabeth Reist. Joseph, b. 07 Sept. 1836 d. 15 Nov. 1886 ,2nd. son of Jacob and Mary Miller, has inscribed on his marker below his name, the following, "Infant Heckendorn" and below "dau.Heckendorn" . Next to his marker is that of Elizabeth his wife, on which is inscribed; "Elizabeth Reist 1841-1936 wife of Joseph Heckendorn and Samuel S. Snider."

The grave site of the author Vera Hallman Hunberger is also located here in the front row, next to a short driveway, just a few head-stones north of the Heckendorn markers.

    I. JACOB HECKENDORN b. 02 June 1803 PA. d. 16 May 1892, Waterloo Co.. *Jacob met Mary MILLER, from Cumberland Co. PA., in Waterloo Co., married her 10 Nov. 1833. PA., d. 1853 Waterloo Co. Ont. Canada. Jacob Miller and Magdelena Bricker had five children, and the family emigrated to Waterloo Co. in 1825.

*The JACOB HECKENDORN/MARY MILLER family, of seven sons and one daughter are listed within this Family History, as recorded in "The Heckendorn Family History and Genealogy" compiled by the Late Vera Hallman Hunsberger,(except for two sons), with additional information and comments by yours truly.
The children of Jacob Heckendorn and Mary 'Polly' Miller (Muller)
were: John, Joseph, Jacob M., Veronica, Christian, Menno, Danie.

BIRTH DATES HAVE BEEN REMOVED THROUGHOUT THIS LISTING, FOR THE PERSONAL SECURITY OF THOSE DESCENDANTS CONSIDERED TO BE LIVING AT THE INCEPTION OF THIS "FAMILY HISTORY".

    II.JOHN HECKENDORN b.*22 Jan. 1835 d. 08 Dec. 1916. married Mary Huber Good, 27 June 1856; b. 29 Dec. 1837, d. 28 Feb. 1921. *John and Mary were my ggrandparents.

John and Mary lived on his father Jacob's farm for a few years as a day-labourer, and several of their children were born there. After leaving the home-farm, they moved to Maryborough township just above Moorefield where they farmed. Later, they lived in Conestoga for some time and finally retired near Breslau. There were twelve children born to this family and all were faithful members of the Mennonite church. They were as follows: Anna(Nancy); Veronica(Franey); Moses *(my grandfather); Barbara; Mary Ann; Leah; Noah; Ezra; Susannah; Lydiann; Israel, and an infant son born and died 23 March 1874.

Mary Huber Good's mother, was Barbara HUBER, b.6 June 1809 in PA, and she at the young age of thirteen, travelled with her parents and other families also from Pennsylvania, to Waterloo County in 1822. There is the possiblity that our Jacob may have travelled with the same group.
Mary's father, Benjamin GOOD b. 24 Nov. 1809, arrived in Waterloo Co.in 1831 at the age of twenty-two and two years later he and Barbara were married. There were two children born into this union, Mary and her older brother Peter, b. 28 Dec. 1835. Mary was at the very tender age of three weeks, when her mother died in Jan. 1838. Benjamin remarried to Barbara Berge b. 19 Sept. 1813 and they had ten children between 1840/1856. The large Huber home located in the present city of Cambridge, was located between the then towns of Preston and Galt, and it was later renovated into apartments and was still inhabited in the mid 1970's.

After Joseph's death, Elizabeth married Samuel S. Snider. *Both Joseph and Elizabeth are buried side by side in the David Eby Cemetery in Waterloo. We only know of and surmise that there were just the two children as listed on Joseph's headstone.

    II. CHRISTIAN HECKENDORN b. 04 June 1843 d. 28 Aug. 1922. m. Annie BEARINGER, 21 May 1868, b. 09 Sept. 1848 d. 15 July 1902, d/o David Bearinger & Catharina Lorenz. One daughter, Lydia was born to Christian and Annie, 02 May 1869 d. 28 Aug. 1922.
    Christian remarried to Sarah Litchy Bauman, 16 Oct. 1910. She was b. 08 Apr. 1858 d. 04 Sept. 1938.

II. VERONICA HECKENDORN b.18 March 1841 d. ? Married Isaac STAUFFER and they had three children; Albert; Mary Ann; Isabelle. There is a listing for a Veronica interred at the Detweiler Mennonite Cemetery, Roseville, Ont., but it is Veronica (Franey), daughter of John and Mary (Good) Heckendorn, who married George Hallman.

II. * DANIEL HECKENDORN b. 13 Dec. 1847 d. 20 Sept. 1867. Buried in Martin's Mennonite Cemetery, Waterloo, Ont. with parents and other members of family. At this time, we have no information regarding Daniel other than the above as he was not listed as a member of the family in the 'original' genealogy history book.

We will proceed with the descendants of JOHN, CHRISTIAN, *JACOB (what little information we have), and MENNO HECKENDORN families, *and if possible VERONICA (HECKENDORN) STAUFFER'S family.
JOSEPH, as earlier mentioned, died at 50 yrs. and was buried with the two children and we know of no others. DANIEL was just "discovered" and we assume he died unmarried, as he died at 19 yrs. old.

*Eddie was a well known individual, working at the Carling Breweries retail store in Waterloo. Got to know him when I worked at Carlings in 1958. I recall my last meeting with Eddie in 1983, in Kitchener at an 'Honourarium Dinner' for the 25 Year Club employee's, given by Labatt's Brewery, successers to Carling's. My wife and I supplied the music for their evening dance. Donald Eitel, an old neighbour and the chap that was hired to replace me when I left Carlings, was awarded his 25 Year pin that evening. Jokingly, I reminded him it was because of me that he was able to receive it.
