No One Blamed In Mishap Death

Inquest Decides George Nyland Fatally Hurt by Walking Into Bus

A finding of accidental death with blame attached to no one was returned last night at an inquest into the death of George Nyland, 76, of Bridgeport, who died of injuries received in a traffic mishap March 22.

The jury found Mr. Nyland came to his death by stepping into the path of a P.U.C. bus at Victoria and Waterloo Streets.

The finding recommended that "all drivers involved in accidents in which there is personal injury should notify the police first."

"The police in turn to summons an ambulance if requested to do so and arrangements be made with the ambulance authorities to honor the police request."

    Request of Testimony

The recommendation regarding notification of police apparently stemmed from testimony by Traffic Sgt. Wilfred Henrich that the first report the police had on the accident was from The Record checking on a tip.

Driver of the bus involved. John Laverty, Blucher St., previously had testified that a passerby had been told to call an ambulance and police.

The phase of the finding dealing with the calling of ambulance apparently referred to testimony by John Cohen, 271 Victoria St. South.

Mr. Cohen, in describing his call to the hospital for an ambulance, said he felt better time could have been made by the latter. if the siren had been used.

    "Blew My Top"

The witness said that he had to describe the situation twice in asking an ambulance. He conceded, however, he might have been talking rapidly and that at one point "blew my top."

Witnesses agreed Mr. Nyland was struck after he stepped from the curb on the northwest corner of the intersection. It was indicated the mishap victim was hurrying toward a passing north-bound bus.

Witnesses described Mr. Nyland walking rapidly or trotting down Waterloo St. to Victoria. He stopped at the curb to allow a southbound car to pass and then stepped from the curb into the path of the southbound bus.

    Bus Going Slowly

Testimony showed the bus was proceeding slowly and that the driver honked the horn, applied the brakes and then swerved in attempts to avoid the mishap.

Witnesses agreed the bus was all but stopped at the time of impact and that Mr. Nyland appaently was toppled and fell heavily to the pavement. Indications were the fatal head injuries were the result of the latter.

Coroner C. C. Belyea congratulated members of the jury on their work. The latter included A. Frank Bernardo, foreman, Leo Reinhart, G. Leo Roberts, Lloyd Christner. A. I. Rosenburg.
