    MCKELLAR, ANGUS

Death of a Very Old Resident of Puslinch

Of Puslinch, near Killean, January 29, 1886. He had been ailing for some time, so that his death was not unexpected. He was in his 71st year. Mr. McKellar came to Canada from Argyllshire, Scotland, sailing the day Queen Victoria was crowned, 20th June 1837. He spent a short time about Peterborough, coming soon to Galt, however and buying the land on the 1st concession of Puslinch. He cut almost the first tree along the line. As soon as his preparations were completed, he removed his young family to the house which he had erected and there he, with some of them, continuously resided until his death. During the forty-four years of his residence, he had the satisfaction of seeing the wild lot gradually put under cultivation. Handsome and commodious buildings replaced the humble ones of early days and prosperity prevails, where for many years nothing but the most active exertions kept the wolf from the door. Mr. McKellar was a genial, warm-hearted man and enjoyed the respect and friendship of all who knew him thoroughly. He leaves a family of six sons and four daughters, John McKellar, postmaster at Avonton, Downie Twp. ; Walter McKellar of Michigan; Archibald and William, still residing on the homestead; Alexander McKellar of New Mexico; Duncan McKellar of San Francisco; Mrs. A. Young of Michigan; Mrs. David Jardine of Galt; Miss Janet, residing with her brothers on the farm; and Mrs. John McCormick of Puslinch. His aged widow resides with her sons, also on the homestead. Mr. McKellar was buried in the pretty little cemetery at Killean, a very large gathering accompanying his body to its last resting place.

MCKELLAR written by Mrs. Angus McKellar of Killean

I was born in Dumfries-shire in 1821, and came to Puslinch with my father, the late Walter Bone, in 1835, and in 1840 married Angus McKellar. When Killean and district was near all forest we settled on lot 7 on the first concession, where we have lived ever since, and raised a family of 5 daughters and 6 sons, who have homes in different parts of U.S.A. and Ontario. I am one of the very first settlers that is left. Not one other is left to remember the early days on the first concession, and the trials that the first settlers had to bear, carrying our flour on our backs from Galt. Our neighbours were Archibald Ramsay, Neil Thomson, Neil Currie, Archibald McMaster, Alex Ramsay, and Norman Ramsay. I can remember when the old log school was built, and the contract was let to one William Lamont, and in size 28 x 36 feed, one door and five windows with rough boards for seats and desks. The trustees were A. McMaster, Angus McKellar and Matthew McPhatter and the first teacher was Neil Currie. Wolves, bears, and deer were numerous in those days around Puslinch and Mill Creek and the wolves were very destructive sometimes.

    BARTELS, FREDERICK

Early on Friday, at his home in Hespeler. He was in his 73rd year, having been born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany on August 6th 1843. On July 16th 1869, he married Sophia Schlueter and emigrated to Canada in the same year, settling in the vicinity of Hespeler and a short time later moving to lot 5, 1st concession, Puslinch, where he farmed successfully until his retirement a number of years ago. Mr. Bartels was highly thought of in the community where he resided so long. Upright and honest in all his dealings, a regular attendant of the Hespeler Lutheran Church, of which he was a life-long member. Independent in politics, voting Conservative chiefly but many times Liberal according to the choice of candidates. A good neighbour in the truest sense of the word, he will long be kindly remembered. He was quiet and unassuming and through his thorough knowledge of farming, amassed a considerable of this world's goods. Mr. Bartels took part in the 90-day war between Prussia and Austria-Hungary in 1866, being present at and taking part in the great battle of Konigratz or Sadowa in 1866 and holding a medal for that campaign. He served as a captain in the German army at the siege of Paris in 1871(maybe 1861?). His brother, Charles served with him in that war. The funeral on Sunday afternoon was very largely attended, the service being conducted from his residence by Rev. Fiebelhorn, pastor of the Lutheran Church. Pallbearers: his sons, Charles and Fred; his sons-in-law, Herman Prestien and Archie McKellar; and his nephews, Fred and Joseph Bartels. The many friends, who gathered to follow his body to its last resting place, attested to the respect and esteem in which he was held. Besides his aged widow, he is survived by a family of two daughters and two sons, Charles in Hespeler; Frederick on the homestead; Mrs. Herman Prestien and Mrs. Archie McKellar; two brothers, Charles in Clearview and William of Preston.
