WINDSOR— Mrs. Lillian Clemens, 76, of Windsor died Sunday at her daughter's home in Windsor. A native of Waterloo County, she lived in Guelph until 1925 and resided in Windsor since that time. Surviving are three sons, D. H. Clemens, Los Angeles, Calif.; J. B. Clemens, Detroit; Dr. R. L. Clemens, Kitchener: six daughters, Mrs. R. M. Kilpatrick and Mrs. D. Sneddon, both of Windsor; Mrs. L. J. Johnson, Hamilton; Mrs. F. A. Hubbell of Roseland, Ont.; Miss Joan Clemens, Bermuda; Mrs. E. B. Tovee, York Mills; and three sisters, Miss Nellie Clemens, Miss Mary Clemens and Miss Ethel Clemens, all of Kitchener. The body is at Ellison's Funeral Home, Windsor, where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Crystal Wedding Near Preston
A Jolly Gathering and a Good Time

(Special to the Telegraph) Speedsville, Fri 28th - Mr. And Mrs. Isaac B. Clemens of this place celebrated their "crystal wedding" last evening, 27th. The happy couple have a wide connection of friends and relatives and their residence presented a joyous and animated appearance when a host of these gathered to help them properly observe this anniversary of their marriage day. As on such occasions there was a happy re-union of old friends and acquaintances and a most enjoyable wedding dinner. Happy speeches and songs followed the repast and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the "wedding" The following are the names of those present: - Rev. Mr. Pomroy and wife, Joel Clemens and wife, J. W. Martin and wife, Jas. Hunt and wife, John Sauder and wife, Samuel Hilborn and wife; Jos. Sauder and wife; H. Turnbull and his wife; Wm. Hunter and his wife; Chas Huber and wife; S. C. Maloney acted as Master of Ceremonies. Suitable presents were bestowed on the hospitable couple and good wishes for their long life and future happiness.

After the confederation of the four provinces of old Canada in 1867 it became necessary to establish both Dominion and Provincial Legislatures. At the elections held in 1867 Mr. Isaac Clemens was elected as member to represent South Waterloo in the Provincial Legislature. In 1871 he was again elected as the representative of the Reform party. Failing in health and that combined with age, caused Mr. Clemens to retire, in 1875, from political life. He now settled down on his old home near Speedsville where he spent the few remaining years in retirement. His death occurred September 24th, 1880. He was married to Mary Ann Brower who was born August 13, 1811, and died March 27th, 1888. To them were born three children"

THE HYDROPHOBIA CURE

LETTER FROM MR. EMERY, OF WILMOT

A few weeks ago, when the details of the horrible death of a man in Dundas fresh is the minds of the community, wrote to Mr. John Emery, of Wilmot, who has for years been in possession of a cure for Hydrophobia, asking him to furnish us with such particulars of his experience in the treatment of the disease as he might be disposed to give, and also pressing upon him the necessity of placing such a valuable remedy within the reach of the public generally. The remedy is known to himself alone, and has been the means of saving human life in a great number, and besides has proved effectual in curing farm stock to the value of thousands of dollars which has boon afflicted with this terrible disease. The name of John Emery is known in connection with this cure throughout all this section of the country, and he cites instances from Goderich, London, Toronto, Hamilton, Long Point, and other places, in which his treatment has proved successful in counteracting the effects of the virus, which had been communicated by rabid animals. We give an extract from his letter which speaks itself. Mr. Emery says :- " There have been endeavours made by many persons to obtain the cure from me, but until now I have refused to sell the receipt to any person. However, I feel at liberty to dispose of it, and if I receive a sufficient remuneration from a respectable person will make the cure known * * * As you wished me to give some instances where persons had procured medicine from me for the bits of a mad dog, or other rabid animals, I would refer you to Mr. John Grummett of Beverly He had nearly all his stock bitten, I gave him medicine for and ox only. All the other animals bitten went mad. Also to Mr. Isaac Clemens, M. P. for South Waterloo, bitten by mad dog. A. J. Peterson, Registrar County Waterloo, bitten by his own dog, which was raving mad beyond a doubt; James Dunam, of Dundas; Jacob Aument, of Queen's Bush, who had a piece bitten out of his nose by a mad wolf. In 1860, Mr. Wm. Noon, of Beverly, got medicine from me for himself and son, had been bitten by mad dog. In 1862, two children sons of Mr. Trow, M. P., Co. Perth, were bitten, and Mrs. Trow had also been bitten 15 years before when a girl, all use used my medicine and were saved. In looking back to 1846 I find two cases - one a child of Ladwick Adit, Wilmot, four years old and a son of Joseph Loetsinger, of North East Hope, 15 years old. These children were literally chawed up, one of them had thirteen holes in the hand and arm and a long cut on the head. In all cases the medicine proved effectual. I shall not write any more at present, but subscribe myself,

In addition to these cases, we know of several instances in Galt and vicinity where the medicine has been used. In Beverly, Mr. Charles McKilligan informs of one case of a mare which had been bitten by a horse which was raving mad and had to be shot. The mare was covered with wounds, medicine had not only to be given internally, but rubbed into the sores. Mr. Emery was so confident that his medicine would effectual that he agreed to be responsible of the stock on the farm, over one thousand dollars worth, and allow the bitten animal run among them only stipulating that the medicine would be given faithfully. The result proved that his confidence was not misplaced, as the mare recovered. This alone is testimony that the remedy is a radical cure, and worthy of attention.

We have corresponded with Mr. Emery for the purpose of inducing him to place the medicine within reach of the public throughout the country, but instead of adopting this new method he now offers to sell the receipt for a consideration. We believe this is the first time has expressed a willingness to dispose of his secret, and in the interests of humanity we think the opportunity should be taken advantage of either by private enterprise or by the action of the Local Government Mr. Emery's address is Baden P. George Clemens, "younger son of George and Elizabeth (Carlisle) Clemens, was born in Pikeland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, July 17, 1777. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm and during the winter months he attended the public school and received such an education as the times afforded. It is well known that the facilities for obtaining a good common school education were at that time far inferior to what they now are. While visiting friends in Montgomery County during the winter of 1799 and 1800, Mr. Clemens was informed that numerous families intended to move either to the western part of the state or to Ohio, and even some were meditating of moving to Canada, the way-out-of-the-world country. No sooner was he in possession of this information than he hunted up such parties who were making preparations to move to Canada in order to receive all the information that could be obtained of this country at that time. Upon his return home he informed his father of what he had heard in regard to Canada. After listening to his son for some time, his father said: 'Well George, if all be true that you have heard in regard to Canada, it truly must be a good country to go to in order to seek one's fortune, but take my advice, first go and see the country for yourself.' During the winter of 1800-1 seven families of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, made arrangements for moving to Canada which company Mr. Clemens joined. He drove one of the teams (see Historical notes on pages 22, 23, and 24 in regard to Mr. Clemens)and in May, 1801, he arrived where now the village of Blair is situated. After making a thorough inspection of this country he found everything beyond his expectations and immediately selected his land on which he settled. This was about one mile east of Preston, near Speedsville, on the farm now owned by his grandson, Isaac B. Clemens. After having cleared several acres of his land he erected a small log house and commenced housekeeping. In course of time he found the words recorded in Genesis 2: 18 to be true, he therefore amended or improved his condition in life by taking to himself a wife in the person of Esther Stauffer who was born December 18th, 1790, and died August 17, 1836. After her decease he was married to (October 27th, 1840) Elizabeth, the widow of David Histand. She was a daughter of old George Bechtel and was born August 8th, 1792, and died July 21st, 1885. old Mr. George Clemens died August 10, 1863. To him and his first wife was born a family of eighteen children"

Henry Bower,"one of the original settlers of this family, came from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born May 3rd, 1780. On November 23rd, 1806, he was married to Elizabeth Marias who was born November 29th, 1783. In the year 1822 they moved to Canada and settled at Preston, Ontario. He was both a carpenter and mechanic by trade. During the summer months he was engaged in putting up buildings in and around Preston, many of which are still standing as a memorial of our worthy old ancestor, Mr Brower. During the long winter months he was busily engaged in making spinning wheels for the young ladies† (now our grandmothers) of Waterloo. The writer's mother used to have a spinning wheel made by Mr Brower. His initials "H. B. 1831" were stamped on the end of frame. Some years after his arrival in Canada he took up auctioneering at which he did quite a business for a number of years. His advantage over other auctioneers was that he was capable of conducting sales in either English or German language. After their arrival in this county they settled at the lower end of Preston where they resided until her death which took place March 8th, 1861. After the death of his aged partner he made his home for a few years with his daughter, Elizabeth. From here he went to the home of his daughter, Mary (Mrs. Isaac Clemens), where he spent the evening of his life in comfort. He died December 10th, 1874, aged 94 years, 7 months, and 7 days. To them was born a family of nine children"

Abraham Clemens L., "the eldest son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Lederach) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, July 3rd, 1781, and when four years of age his parents moved to Chester County where he was raised. In 1807 he was married to Magdalena, daughter of John and Hester (Steiner ) Miller. She was born February 8th, 1786, and died February 1st, 1847. In 1809 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, a little north of Preston on the farm owned until recently by their son Joel Here they both died. His death took place January 26th, 1845. In 1815 he was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Hagey field of labor. This position he held until his death. To him and his wife were born ten children, "

Mennonite families suffered misfortunes, such as childbirth deaths of women, accidental work deaths of men, frequent deaths of infants and young children, and the scourges of cholera, typhoid and tuberculosis. Cholera epidemics of the 1830s especially in July-August 1834 - could be devastating. Funerals were usually arranged by neighbours and friends, but the community was so demoralized in 1834 that, as Deacon Abraham L. Clemens wrote to his brother in Chester County in 1836, "the neighbours did not go out to assist one another as in any other disease so that there was no funeral held."

Magdalena Miller, "daughter of John and Hester (Steiner) Miller, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, February 8th, 1786. She was married, in 1807, to Deacon Abraham L. Clemens who was born in the same place, July 3rd, 1781. In 1809 they moved to Canada and settled a little north of Preston where they both died. He died January 26th, 1845, and she died February 1st, 1847. See No. 1830. (Could not ascertain whether Magdalena and Margaret Miller were any relation to I Jacob Miller)."

Jacob S. Shoemaker, "the eldest of John Shoemaker's children, was born April 24th, 1798. He, after quitting school, entered his father's mill where he was engaged until 1820 when he became desirous to seek his fortune in the then much-spoken-of Canada. He came to Abraham Erb, Waterloo, some time during the spring of 1820. He, being a practical miller, and just the man required to manage the grist mill of this place, remained in Abraham Erb's service as miller for nearly two years when he and William Hunsberger returned to Pennsylvania to visit their parents and friends. After making a sojourn of a few months they returned the same spring. Mr. Shoemaker again assumed the management of the Waterloo Mills. On July 2nd, 1822, he was married to Elizabeth Schneider (See Schneider record for her family history) who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 2nd, 1802, and died in Preston, November 26th, 1876. Some time after their marriage he and his wife went home to Pennsylvania on a visit. During this visit he ordered the large clock, now in possession of his daughter, Elizabeth. His father brought it with him when he paid a visit to Canada in 1826. Some time during the year 1827 or 1828 he purchased lot No. 59, German Company's Tract and afterwards became the founder of Bridgeport. In 1829 he constructed the large dam and erected the sawmills still standing. In 1830 he erected the large roller mills now in possession of Messrs Shirk and Snider. He resided in the town of Waterloo until 1830 when he moved to Bridgeport. Here he soon became proprietor, besides the extensive mills and sawmills, of a store, woollen mills and distillery. In 1840 he built the large house now possessed by Mrs. Veronica Horst. During the great financial depression all over the province in 1851, besides other difficulties never fully investigated, he is said to have failed. He then moved to Preston to his son-in-law, Joel Clemens, from there to Blenheim Township, Oxford County, where he erected a sawmill and did a successful business. His last days were spent with his daughter, Barbara (Mrs. H. Huber of Berlin), where he died March 20th, 1875. Both he and his wife are buried in the Mennonite burial ground at the east end of Berlin. They had a family of eleven children"

Died, In Berlin, on Saturday, 20th instant, Jacob S. Shoemaker, aged 76 years 10 months and 26 days. Funeral on Wednesday, 24th inst., at One o'clock P.M., from the residence of Mrs. Huber, Queen-st., to the Mennonite Burial Ground. Berlin, March 22nd, 1875

As we know the Family Compact's misrule stirred up the Rebellion in 1837, and that William Lyon Mackenzie was the leader. After the clash of arms at Montgomery's tavern. near Toronto, he fled to Buffalo, N.Y., via Bridgeport. The late Allen Huber asserted.
A large reward was offered for his capture, alive or dead. and Dr. Scott of Berlin and J. U. Tyson of Bridgeport watched to seize Mackenzie. My grandfather, Jacob S. Shoemaker, a miller and Reformer at Bridgeport, And out scouts to warn Mackenzie. He was taken across the Grand River and guided to the Bush Inn near Doon. From there he reached Buffalo in safety. Jacob Shoemaker often rode over to Buffalo to consult with his leader. When local sympathizers wished to send Mackenzie a message, my grandfather placed the letter under his saddlecloth. Thus when searched at Hamilton or elsewhere nothing incriminating was found on his person

Historic Building:
Built in 1840 by Jacob S. Shoemaker across from the mill he constructed in 1830. In 1969 the house with stone foundation and handmade brick walls was listed in fair to poor condition. The roof was framed with mortise and tenon joining. The house was a combination of Georgian proportions and classical decorations. The large dormers were reminiscent of early buildings in Pennsylvania. In 1850 the house was sold to Elias Eby together with the mill complex. The house was been renovated a number of times. The porch was removed and the house converted into a tri-plex by 1969.<sup>1a
