LEVI ALLEN GEHL

PRESTON, Oct. 9 - Ailing for the past three years and seriously ill for the past six months, Levi Allen Gehl, wellknown Preston resident, died at his home here yesterday afternoon. He was in his 78th year. Born in Freeport, the late Mr. Gehl farmed there until 23 years ago when he came to Preston, making his home here since that time. He was employed at the Otto Homuth and Sons, Ltd., plant until three years ago when illness necessitated his retirement. The deceased was a past noble grand of Cambridge Lodge, 1.0.0.F., Preston and also a member of the Encampment, having been treasurer of the Encampment for a number of years. The late Mr. Gehl was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a former member of the church council. Surviving are his wife, formerly Mary Levandusky; a stepdaughter, Mrs. James Mathieson, Port Credit; a stepson, Harold Levandusky, Preston, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence, 223 Dover Street, Preston, on Sunday at 2: 30. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.

Abram Tohman, "the eldest, was born in 1804. He was married to Mary, eldest daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Eby) Bricker. She was born November 3rd, 1806. After their marriage they resided on her father's old homestead near Freeport, Ontario, until February 25th, 1846, when the moved to Wilmot Township, a little west of New Dundee where they resided until his death which occurred December 12th, 1867. After his death the widow had her home with her son, Samuel, who now possesses the old homestead. She died December 27th, 1893."

On the 12 of Dec, in Waterloo County; Ontario, of palsy, Abm. Toman, aged 62 years, 11 months and 5 days. He was buried at the Blenheim meeting-house Burying-ground, where appropriate funeral discourses were delivered.

TOMAN.-Mary Toman (maiden name Bricker), widow of the late Abraham Toman, was born in Waterloo township, Waterloo Co., Ont., November 3, 1806, and died in the township of Wilmot, December 26, 1893, aged 87 years, 1 month and 23 days. She survived her husband for over 26 years. She leaves a posterity of 9 children, 65 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral on Dec 29th, 1893, on which occasion M.S. Bowman preached in German from John 14: 3, and Noah Stauffer in English from Isaiah 28: 29. Buried in Blenheim cemetery. Her end was peace.

Tohman, "The Tohmans were among the early settlers of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and according to tradition were natives of Saxony, Germany, from which place the old progenitor came about the year 1770. It is not known to whom he was married, neither what family he had. All we have is the name of one son named Samuel, (Mr. William Honsberger informed the writer that he was under the impression that Mr. Tohmans name was Samuel and he left or disappeared about the year 1815) who was born in 1769 and was married, January 9th, 1804, to Mary Derstein, (Mrs. Elizabeth Clemmer informed me that her name was Mary Derstein) sister to Mrs. Jacob Clemens and Mrs Abraham Clemens. She was born October 9th, 1771. After being married about ten years he disappeared. (After the family had moved to Canada he returned to Montgomery County where he was again married) In 1825 the wife and children moved to Canada with her sisters and settled in Waterloo County where she died many years ago."

There is a problems with the children of Valentine Tohman and Sarah Derstein. Some have the children listed with Samuel Tohman and Mary Derstein. Samuel supposedly abandoned his family and it is possible that Valentine became a foster parent. More research is needed.

Samuel Bricker,"the youngest son of Peter and Mary (Bear) Bricker, was born July 25th, 1776. He, in company with his brother John and family, Joseph Bechtel and family, and others, came to Canada in spring, 1802. They took up land in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Blair. In autumn, 1802, more than a dozen families had settled within the county. In March 1803, Mr Bricker was obliged to visit "Little York" (Toronto) to transact some private business. While there he received the sad intelligence that the whole of the township of Waterloo was mortgaged.† On his return to Waterloo he informed the settlers of the fact, and in order to prove the report of their friend, the settlers appointed Jacob Bechtel and Samuel Betzner to go to "Little York" and make a though investigation in regard to the mortgage. To their great surprise, they, in making inquiry at the Registry Office, found the report too true and that the amount of the mortgage was $40,000. covering 60,000 acres of land. Mr Samuel Bricker and Joseph Shirk were appointed by the settlers to return to their friends in Franklin, Cumberland, and Lancaster Counties, Pennsylvania, to make arrangements in raising sufficient money to lift the mortgage, upon which the company still known as the "German Company" was formed. The stockholders entrusted the required sum of money to extinguish the mortgage to Samuel Bricker and Daniel Erb who carried it all the way to Canada on a conveyance. At their return to Canada the money was paid over to the proper parties and thus the mortgage was cancelled. In 1801 Mr. Bricker was married to Rebecca, eldest daughter of John and Rebecca (Hershey) Eby. She was born April 14th, 1781, and died November 4th, 1861. They settled near Chicopee, a little north of Freeport, Ontario, on the east side of the Grand River. Their farm is now in possession of Richard Gehl who is married to a grand-child of old Samuel Bricker. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place November 15th, 1868, aged 92 years, 3 months, and 29 days. Their family consists of eight children"

On the 15th of Nov., 1868, in Waterloo co., Ontario, Samuel Bricker, aged 92 years, 3 months and 29 days. He was buried at Eby's burying ground. Funeral sermons were preached by Abm. Weaver and John Bear, from 1 Thess. 5: 9, 10 and Rom. 6: 7. He was born in Pennsylvania.

The earliest Crown grants in the area were issued, beginning in 1803. to Samuel Bricker (lot 34. concession 8), Philip Saltberger (lot 35, concession 8). and Benham Preston Pots 32- 35. concession 9). Along with seven other families of the Mennonite faith, these settlers took land grants in Whitchurch Township because they were having difficulty obtaining dear deeds for land they had hoped to buy in Waterloo County near Kitchener. Ontario. Bricker was able to borrow enough money from relatives in Pennsylvania to form joint stock company known as the German Company, and this enabled the families to buy the land in Waterloo County. Eight of these families merely cleared the land in Whitchurch, as required, and sold the acreage within a few years. Samuel Bricker, however, held the property until 1847, when he sold the east half to William Graham. In 1852 he sold the remaining west half of his land to John Grose, whose descendants are still there.
