Death of J.U. Clemens - The news was received here with deep regret that Mr. J. U. Clemens had pasted away early yesterday morning at his home, 15 Margaret Ave., Kitchener. Mr. Clemens had been in poor health for some time, but was able to continue his business here up to a week ago Saturday. Leaving here he took to his bed and although seriously ill hopes were at first entertained for his recovery. Dropsy and heart failure were the immediate cause of his death, but a severe attack of influenza and pneumonia two years ago had greatly undermined his health. The late Mr. Clemens was born near Blair in February 1850 and was in his 71st year. He conducted a general store business in New Dundee for about ten or twelve years, after which he removed to Kitchener where he bought out C. Kranz & Co. About sixteen years ago he opened a general store in New Hamburg which he conducted successfully up to time of his death. Deceased was a valued member of Trinity Methodist Church, Kitchener, and in politics a staunch Liberal. He was well and favorably known throughout this district and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. The late Mr. Clemens was married to Miss Fannie Simpson, who survives him besides three sons and one daughter. The children are: Harry, of Montreal, Charles of Toronto, Reginald, of Detroit, and Miss Millicent at home. Wendell and Harry Clemens, of Kitchener, and John Clemens, of Galt, are brothers. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late residence to Mount Hope Cemetery

CLEMENS

Wendall Clemens was born December 28th, 1823, in the township of Dumfries, Waterloo Co., Ont., and died August 7th, 1897, bringing his aged to 73 years, 7 months and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Catharine Unger (who survives him) on Nov. 25th, 1845, and they lived together 51 years and 9 months. To them were born twelve children, ten sons and two daughters, one of the sons, Adam, having preceded the father to their long home. His end was very peaceful. He gave his heart to God with his companion 47 years ago and then joined the Mennonite church, and had ever since been a faithful member. Services conducted by John McNally.

Wendel Clemens, "was born December 28th, 1823. On November 25th, 1845, he was married to Catharine Unger who was born March 16th, 1829. They resided in Waterloo County for many years where he was engaged in farming. On August 28th, 1879, they moved to Lapeer County, Michigan, within three miles of Brown City, where he followed farming until recently when he retired, leaving the managing of the farm in the hands of his son Allen. To him and his wife was born a family of twelve children"

"It seemed as if the luck of the Clemens's family was ruined. In spite of all his natural talents, the father [Henry] became a squanderer and fell into vice. Later, he stopped drinking, claimed conversion, and was totally poor. He came to the children of his first wife in an insane condition and was taken to the poorhouse where he went totally mad."

Adam Unger, "son of Adam and Elizabeth (Koehner) Unger, was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 6th, 1801, came to Canada when eleven years of age and was raised in Waterloo Township. On October 31st, 1824, he was married to Margaret, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Detweiler) Hallman. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, August 31st, 1805, and came to Canada with her parents in 1824. In February, 1825, they moved to North Dumfries Township, on lot No. 32, one mile east of Roseville. Here they resided until their death. He died August 17th, 1889, and she died March 18th, 1884. They had a family of seven children"

Hallman Meeting House

It is not known just when the first log meeting house of the Hallman congregation was built. However, on June 1, 1847 a one-acre plot of land, for a meeting house and burial ground, was deeded from Adam Unger to trustee, Jacob H. Detweiler. This land was east of Roseville on the northwest corner of Lot 31, Concession 11 of North Dumfries Township, and on the south side of the Blenheim or Roseville Road, which was built westerly from Galt. A stone cairn made up of old tombstones stands on this property today.

A new brick church, called Hallman Mennonite Church, was constructed in 1854 (Burkholder 1935: 104) or 1856 (Taylor 1970: 282) on land on the north side of the road, just west of the old meeting house. The congregation is reported to have disbanded in 1891. The property was sold soon after.

Death of Adam Unger, Esq. \endash One after another the old settlers of our county are passing away. On Saturday evening, August 17th, inst., there passed away this well-known and highly respected resident of Waterloo County at the residence of his son, Mr. Moses Unger, Blair. Mr. Unger, sr., had been ill for some months, suffering from the disease known as dropsy, and his death at the advanced age of eighty-eight and a half years was not unexpected by his large circle of friends.

Deceased was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 7th, 1801, emigrated to Canada in 1812, and in the year 1824 was married to Margaret Hallman.

After their marriage they settled on the farm now occupied by Mr. Noah Bricker, near Roseville, and here carved out for themselves a comfortable home.

In the year 1862 Mr. Unger retired from the farm, moved about a mile near Galt, where he resided a few years, after which he removed to Roseville until the death of Mrs. Unger in the year 1884, when he came to spend the evening of his life with his son, Mr. Moses Unger, at Blair.

Deceased was much respected by all with whom he became acquainted, being of a retiring disposition and a consistent member of the Mennonite Church.

The funeral on Tuesday was largely attended by people who came from far and near to pay the last tribute of respect to their old and esteemed friend.

His family consisted of seven children, of whom six are yet living, viz.: - Mr. John Unger, Waterloo; Mr. Benjamin Unger, Berlin; Mr. Moses Unger, Blair; Mrs. Wendell Clemens, Michigan; Mrs. Martin Grimm, near Milverton, and Mrs. Jacob Bricker, near Roseville. A worthy life ended full of years and enjoying the love of his relatives and esteem of his friends.

A SENSATIONAL SHOOTING MATCH.

An old familiar character in the neighborhood was the late Adam Unger, whom Providence evidently never intended should die an unnatural death. It is said by old citizens that he would frequently be seen walking barefooted through the hot ashes of the clearing apparently as unconcerned as if he were walking upon Brussels carpet. One day Adam bad a miraculously close call from lightning. On this occasion he and his hired man were logging when a thunder shower came up and they sought shelter between two logs. A flash of the electric current instantly killed the hired man, but Mr. Unger was unharmed. The hired man very profane person, and on was a very occasions previous to this in fits of anger would invoke the Almighty to strike him dead. Providence moves in a mysterious way, indeed, and the fact that Unger escaped unharmed leads one, not even superstitiously inclined, to believe that it was an act of Him who controls the elements to satisfy a wish of one of his creatures. The sad occurrence created quite a sensational morsel of news all over the country.

At another time Providence seems to have interfered in behalf of Unger. One day many years ago a shooting match was in progress at the old tavern now occupied by Mr. Knechtel, the weaver, and the contestants were shooting at a target down the road in the direction of Mr. John Perrin's lane. Unger and his wife drove by in sleigh and when they had reached a hundred yards or so distant from the shooters he felt a sudden sting in one of his heels. On examination when he arrived home revealed a wound which plainly told that the heel had received a rifle bullet, the result of careless marksmanship. All efforts to extract the bullet proved useless, and for many years prior to his death he was to a certain extent troubled by the leaden messenger which he carried with him to his grave.

Death Of An Old Resident

Mrs. Adam Unger, a very old resident of North Dumfries, died on Tuesday, in her 79th year. The deceased lady enjoyed very good health up to a little more than a week ago, when she was seized with the illness which caused her death. Her aged husband and family survive her.

Mrs. Unger's funeral will take place today (Friday) from her husband's residence, at 2 o'clock p.m.

In 1776 he received eighty-two acres of his father's old homestead which he possessed for nine years. She was born December 11th, 1774, and died October 13th, 1866. In 1802 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, near the village of Blair where he died. After his death the mother had her home with her son David who resided near Roseville where she died. They had a family of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy and are buried at Blair. There were three Johns, the first died, aged nearly nine years; the second was born a few weeks after the decease of the first; and after second's decease they named a third one John."

…I, John Bricker, senr., of the Township of Dumfries…make and publish this my Last Will and Testament. (First) I will that my funeral expenses and all my other debts, if there shall be any, be paid out of my estate as soon as can be after my decease. I will that my beloved wife Nancy shall have to live in the house which we now occupy during her natural life, and my son David Bricker shall keep a cow for my wife Nancy during her life, which cow he shall in every respect keep in the same manner as he keeps his own cows. I also give and bequeath unto my wife during her life, all my household furniture which I may be possessed of at my decease and that my beloved wife Nancy Bricker, shall yearly and every year as long as she lives, have Twenty five pounds, and if my wife Nancy shall through sickness or otherwise happen to need more than twenty five pounds, then my Executors shall give her so much more as will suffice to keep her comfortable. I will that all the above-mentioned bequests to my said wife shall be instead of her lawful Dower. And it is my will that the real and person property together with the five hundred dollars, together with all I have heretofore given and paid to my eldest son Peter Bricker, shall be taken, and the same really is, the whole share of my said son Peter Bricker's heirship by me bequeathed to him out of my real and personal estate. And it shall be considered, and it is so truly, that my said son Peter Bricker is, by his having receiv'd from me as before said, amply remunerated for which time he has worked for me, after he was twenty-one years of age. And I consider that my son David Bricker and my daughters Nancy and Susanna have their full share of heirship out of my real estate, in the land and their property which they have already received from me, for which reason I exclude them from any further share out of the same. Notes:

In Wilmot, Waterloo Co., C. W, at the residence of Abraham Bricker, son of the deceased, on the 14th October, Nancy, wife of the late John Bricker, at the advanced age of 91 years, 10 months, and 2 days. She came from Cumberland Co., Pa., to Canada in the Spring of 1802, and lived here, respected by all, to the day of her death. She was a sister of Daniel and Jacob Erb, to whom the German Company Tract of Waterloo Township was deeded in 1865, also of Abraham Erb, the founder of Waterloo Village. She was buried on the 16th in the old burying-ground in the village of Blair. This is the oldest piece of ground selected for burying purposes in Waterloo, and she was the one who made the selection. Sixty-two years ago, while her husband was away to the States, one of her sons died, and as there was no place to bury the dead she went up to the hill, a little distance from where they were then living, and found an open little little(sic) place where she decided to bury her dead. She planted a tree at the foot of the little grave which tree is now about ten inches in diameter. She herself gave ground for a public cemetery, and for that reason wished to be buried there. Moses Bowman and Daniel Wismer officiated on the occasion. Only one or two are still living who came to Canada so early as the deceased.- Waterloo Chronicle

Adam Unger, "son of John Unger, a native of Switzerland, was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, about the year 1763. When some twenty years of age he, in company with others, emigrated to America and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near Lititz. Here he was married to Elizabeth Koehner. They had a family of six children, two sons and four daughters, all born in Warwick Township. In 1812 he, in company with his wife and family, moved to Canada and arrived at Preston, Waterloo County, May 31st. For a short time they resided in one of the small log houses on the left side of the road leading from Preston to Blair, about a quarter mile from Cress's Hotel. From here he moved on north-west quarter of lot No. 54, German Company's Tract, near Centreville, part of his farm is now owned by David Thaler. After residing here for some years he sold this property and moved near Preston where he died."

Benjamin Hallman, "was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as his calling. During the great financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule all these parties in a very few years were the possessors of valuable farms. Such was the case with Benjamin Hallman, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and, finding things to his advantage, he moved to Canada in 1825 (See page 56 for more information) and settled in Waterloo County, two miles west of the town of Waterloo. Here he resided until spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm, then nearly all forest. This farm is now in possession of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old progenitor died full of years, September 10th, 1869. On September 2nd, 1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th, 1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, save the two youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were born in Waterloo County, Ontario"
