    John Tanner

The death of John Tanner, one of the oldest residents in the vicinity of Hawksville, occurred at his home near that place, on Wednesday, Jan. 2nd, at the ripe old age of 76 years. Death came after an illness of one week and was due to hemorrhage of the kidneys. The remains were interred in the Hawksville cemetery, on Jan 6th, when a large concourse of friends turned out to pay their last tribute of respect to a man who had been universally esteemed as a man, a citizen, a Christian gentleman. The funeral services were conducted by Rev._____, singer ,pastor of the Methodist Church, of which Mr. Tanner had been an active and consistent member for half a century, having filled the important positions of class leader and Sunday School superintendent. During his later years, his hearing almost completely failed him and he was unable to take much part in social life. He was, however, an intelligent reader and kept well informed to the last, on affairs of church and state. John Tanner was born Aug. 14, 1823, at Fenteden, Kent Co., England. In 1833 he removed with his parents to Aurora, York Co., Ont. He learned the trade of a tanner and in Sept.,1850, married Miss Ann Currey, of North Gwillimbury Township. Soon after they removed to the "Queen's Bush", settling in the village of Glenallan, Peel Twp., where he built a small tannery and carried on business until 1874, when he removed to Hawksville. Here he continued the tanning business in partnership with two of his sons, up to the time of his death. He leaves a widow and six surviving children. The latter are : Stephen ; Walter, Chicago ; Mrs. McKay, Palmerston; and Glover, Currey and Mrs. Chas. Bulmer, Hawksville.
