They resided about two and one-half miles north of New Dundee, on his father's old homestead until about five years ago when they moved to Berlin where he died December 10th, 1893. His widow still resides in their home which he purchased shortly before his death. To them were born twelve children"

HALLMAN.- On the 10th of December, 1893, in Berlin, Ont., of paralysis, from which he suffered about three weeks, Bro. John S. Hallman, aged about 64 years. He was buried on the 13th in the Blenheim graveyard. Funeral services at the house by Moses Erb, Jacob B. Bowman and David B. Sherk. He leaves a widow and a number of children and grand-children to mourn their loss. Bro. Hallman was highly esteemed by all and his loss will be deeply felt.

Mr. John Hallman

Frequent mention has been made during the last few days, of the condition of Mr. John S. Hallman who, a few weeks ago was stricken with paralysis on one side. It was thought he would recover, but lately he had spells of unconsciousness and the stroke resulted fatally on Sunday. Deceased was 64 years, 6 months and a few days at the time of his death, and was one of the old pioneers of the district. He was an upright an upright man and highly respected. Funeral from his late residence, Church St., Wednesday, December 13, 1893, at 8: 30 a.m. to proceed to the United Brethren Church, and thence to the old homestead in Wilmot for refreshments, leaving the old homestead at 2 p.m. and proceed to the Old Mennonite Church in Blenheim, where services will be held.

Hallman. - Mary (Clemens) Hallman was born Sept. 11, 1834; died Jan. 17, 1915, at the ripe old age of 80 y. 4 m. 6 d. She was united in wedlock July 18, 1852, with John S. Hallman, whose beloved companionship she enjoyed for 41 years. He preceded her 21 years. This union was blessed with a family of 5 sons and 7 daughters, all of whom are still living except one daughter who died in 1882. She was converted early in life and was a faithful and consistent member of the Mennonite Church for over 60 years. She was blessed with a wonderful constitution, for besides the cares and duties of raising a large family, she managed many a time to lend a helping hand in the families of neighbors, often succeeding well in the treatment of sick children in those olden days when doctors were few and far away. In her declining years she was afflicted with rheumatism and often longed to depart and be with Christ, but although she suffered much at times, she always seemed to be resigned to the will of the Lord, and we have the blessed hope that He has taken her to Himself. Funeral services were conducted at the Blenheim Church by E. S. Bauman from Jno. 14: 18, 19, in German, and Jonas Snider from Rev. 14: 13, in English. Buried in cemetery near the church

Hallman. - Sister Mary Hallman (nee Clemens) relict of the late John S. Hallman was born Sept. 11, 1834; died Jan. 17, 1915, at the age of 80 y. 4 m. 6 d. She suffered a good deal during the last two years of her life, but died in the blessed hope of a blissful immortality. She was married to John S. Hallman 52 years ago. They had a family of 5 sons and 7 daughters. who all survive her except 1 daughter. Her husband preceded her 21 years. The funeral services were conducted at the Blenheim Mennonite Church on Jan. 20, Bro. E. S. Bauman preached in German from Jno. 14: 19, and Bro. Jonas Snider in English from Rev. 14: 13, to a full house. Interment in the cemetery adjoining.

Rev. Jacob Hallman, "the eldest in the family, was born November 18th, 1803. In 1822 he, in company with Mr. Lutz, walked to Canada and made Waterloo County, Ontario, his home for about two years, then he returned to his native state where he remained until the following spring when he and his father and family moved to Canada. Some time after his arrival he was married to Eva, daughter of Christian and Polly (Ruth) Strome (Then spelled Strohm). She was born September 9th, 1805, and died July 11th, 1886. Soon after their marriage they moved on their farm in Wilmot Township, about two and one-half miles north of New Dundee where they resided until their deaths. In 1837 he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite Church which body he served faithfully for over forty years. His sermons were always plain, practical, and accompanied with a strong appeal to the younger members of the congregation to live up to the teachings of the Scriptures. His great and only desire was that he might pass the rest of his days in the humble yet honorable service in the ministry of the Lord, to which he was so sincerely attached. He died March 23rd, 1878. His family consisted of six children"

HALLMAN.-March 23rd, in Waterloo Co., Ont., of dropsy, Pre. JACOB HALLMAN, aged 74 years, 5 months and 4 days. He served as minister 42 years. He was much beloved by his neighbors, his fellow-ministers, and the whole church. He had peace with God, the church and his fellow man. He was firmly grounded on the Rock and Chief Corner-stone, Jesus Christ. His walk and conversation were what he preached, humility. He bore his sufferings with patience, and leaves a sorrowing widow and three married children to mourn their loss. The entire church and his fellow-ministers also feel that they have sustained a severe loss, but they feel confident too, that their loss is his eternal gain. He was buried on the 25th at Blenheim burying-ground, where a large number of people were present. As he himself had requested, Bro. Amos S. Cressman preached at the house and Moses Bauman and George Schmidt at the meeting-house, from the text which he himself had selected, 2 Tim. 4:6-8. The hymn sung was also his own selection from the Skippack Hymn Book, Page 273,

Benjamin Hallman, "was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as his calling. During the great financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule all these parties in a very few years were the possessors of valuable farms. Such was the case with Benjamin Hallman, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and, finding things to his advantage, he moved to Canada in 1825 (See page 56 for more information) and settled in Waterloo County, two miles west of the town of Waterloo. Here he resided until spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm, then nearly all forest. This farm is now in possession of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old progenitor died full of years, September 10th, 1869. On September 2nd, 1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th, 1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, save the two youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were born in Waterloo County, Ontario"

About the year 1822, Joseph Oberholtzer, a sawyer, and Cornelius Pannabecker, a blacksmith, both sound men, had come to the conclusion that, having regard to the fact that so many new buildings were being put up by the settlers, a saw mill in this locality would pay.

In 1823, Joseph Oberholtzer bought from Christian Strome (Strohm) 24 acres of land lying both sides of the River Speed at some distance below the present D. W. & W. Buildings and on it they erected a small saw mill building, installed sawing machinery and built a dam on the Speed to furnish power to operate it.

After it had been in operation for a time they discovered to their sorrow that their mill was not big enough to handle the huge logs the farmers were hauling in to be sawn, and so, later, when their frail dam went out in a flood it was not replaced; They salvaged what they could and wrote off the rest to profit and loss. They had made the mistake of building too small and they paid the shot.

Abraham S. Clemens, "the youngest son of Abraham and Mary (Steiner) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1790. On May 19, 1812, he was married to Rachel Dierstein who was born November 15th, 1791, and died December 3rd, 1864. In 1825 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, about one mile west of Breslau, on lot No. 123, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until 1837 when he purchased part of lot No. 111, about two miles south of Breslau. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place December 25, 1867. A good many years before his death he was ordained a deacon of the Mennonite Church, a position for which he was well qualified. Many a wholesome advice did he give to his congregation. His practice was to visit all the members of his field of labor twice a year and during such visits he would give words of cheer and comfort to many a weary pilgrim. He encouraged them to look to Christ in all their trials and troubles and reminded them of the many cheering promises given unto all who put their trust in him who died for all. To them was born a family of eight children"

OBITUARY FOR ABRAHAM S. CLEMMENS

Died on the first day of the recent Christmas holidays, that is on December 25th last, Abraham S. Clemmens died in Waterloo township, Waterloo County, Canada West of apoplexy. He was formerly of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1790 in Lower Salford township, in the aforementioned Montgomery county, and died at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 18 days. He entered the holy state of matrimony on May 19, 1812 with Rachel Derstein of Bucks county, and emigrated to Canada with his family in the year 1825. He was happily married for approximately 52 years, and a widower for 3 years and 22 days. He sired 8 children, 6 of whom are still living, namely 3 sons and 3 daughters.

His descendants, with 51 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, number consequently, 89 souls. On the day he died, he arose healthy and happy, sat down to breakfast after he had directed a loud and earnest prayer to the Giver of all good. He shoved aside a coffee cup which was sitting near him, and reached for the jug, to pour himself a drink of water, when suddenly, his hand fell. His son George, who had also just risen from the table, hurried over to help his father; his soul wanted to take leave of his body, and no human effort was of any help to him. He was speedily carried to his bed; but, he did not open his eyes again; his speech became weak and during the night that followed, approximately at 11.30 p.m., he slept away to his Lord. The deceased was generally respected and loved, and after he had accomplished much good, and ,we hope, useful things during his active life, he peacefully paid the debt of nature. For many years, he was the head of the Mennonite congregation there, and his eye was ever watchful over his flock. On the 29th instant, his body was taken to Cressman's Mennonite meeting-house, accompanied by a large number of friends and acquaintances, and committed to mother-earth, on which occasion the Rev. Hagey (at the deceased's house), and the Rev. Enoch Derstein (at the grave), spoke words of comfort and instruction to the crowd present, based on the text in the latter part of Verse 12, Chapter 4 of the Book of Amos: " Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, 0 Israel!"

On the 3d of December 1864, in Waterloo Co., C. W., after suffering several days with Colic, Rachel Clemens, wife of Abm. S. Clemens,(Deacon,) aged 73 years and 18 days. Her maiden name was Derstein. She was buried on the 6th at Cressman's grave yard, when in the meeting house at the same place, funeral discourses were delivered from Jn. 5: 24, 25, and Rev. 14: 13.

Notes:

Jacob Shantz, "the third son of Isaac and Barbara (Reiff) Shantz, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, October 11th, 1781. In 1805 he was married to Mary Yost who was born in the same county, March 12th, 1784, and died near Berlin, Ontario, October 22, 1869. In 1810 they left their native home and moved to Canada. They settled a little south-east of Berlin, on the farm now owned by their grandson, Jacob B. Shantz. This place old Mr. Shantz purchased from old George (Yarrick) Eby who had settled thereon in 1804. Here Mr. and Mrs. Shantz resided until their deaths. He died July 1st, 1867, leaving a family of ten children"

On the first of July, 1867, in Waterloo Township, C. W., Br. JACOB SHANTZ, aged 85 years, 8 months, and 20 days. He was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and removed to Canada with his family in the year 1810. He lived in wedlock sixty-two years, and leaves eight children, eighty-four grand-children, and fifty-six great-grand-children. He took an active part in converting the wilderness of Waterloo Township into fruitful country. He was energetic and courageous in what he did, and is his works were according to the will of God, he is now at rest. DAVID SHERK.

A LARGE FAMILY

The family of the late Jacob Shantz, father of our well-known Mr. Jacob Y. Shantz, was most remarkable for its size and long life. There were eight brothers in this family, named Isaac, John, Joseph, Joshua, David, Jacob, Samuel and Amos - all good scriptural names. They all write Y. as a middle name, after their mother's maiden name, which was Yost. These brothers all lived up to about two weeks ago when Isaac, the eldest, died at the advance age of about 70, the youngest being about 50. They all raised large families, some of them even beyond the orthodox dozen, and we believe all with perhaps one exception rejoice in the possession of numerous grand-children. The family have also been remarkably successful in their business matters, each having not only a comfortable home of his own but a sufficient surplus to start his children on the road to prosperity. These worthy brothers had one sister, wife of the late Abraham D. Clemens, Williamsburg, who is also still living though considerably over sixty years old. It is a very rare thing to find so large a family attaining the ages of these excellent brothers who are most of them yet in the prime of manhood.
