    Notes:

    ACHESON, GEORGE, was born in Galt in 1859, the son of the Rev. Robert Acheson, and was educated at Galt Grammar School. He attended the University of Toronto, graduating in Arts with a gold medal in natural sciences in 1880, and was then appointed Science Master at Toronto Collegiate Institute. In I883 he obtained his Master's degree, (1) in that year publishing a pioneer paper on fresh water algae in Canada (2). He received his M.B. degree with first class honours in 1889, and amongst other appointments, became examiner for the Medical Board and for the University of Toronto and Victoria College (3).

    He returned to Galt late in 1893, purchasing the practice of Dr. Geo. Sylvester, (4), and he remained there for about fifteen years. He then moved to Hamilton, possibly by way of Lucknow and Ancaster. In 1922 he went to New Brunswick practicing first in Kingston, (5), and in 1925, St. Martins.

    In 1929 he developed pernicious anemia and gave up his practice, returning to Hamilton where he died on November 26th of that year. He was survived by his wife, the former Louise M. Phymister of Montreal, one son and three daughters. His interest in military affairs began in 1876 when he joined the University Company of the Queen's Own Rifles, in due course becoming commander of the Company. He joined the 29th, Regiment in Galt and became Lt. Col. commanding in 1899. From 1907 he commanded the 2nd. Infantry Brigade.

    During the War he was attached to Headquarters of Military District #2, and on his retirement from the reserve in 1923 he had the honorary rank of Brigadier General.

    George Acheson, M. A., M. B., Toronto, was born at Galt in 1859. His father Rev. Robert Acheson, is a Presbyterian clergyman. In 1890 Dr. Acheson married Louie M. Phymister, daughter of Jas. Phymister, of Montreal. He was educated in Galt Grammar School under Dr. Tassie, where he won the Dufferine medal for general proficiency. in 1876 he entered the University of Toronto, and graducated in arts in 1880, taking the gold medal in natural sciences. In 1881 he was appointed Science Master in the Toronto Collegiate Institute. in 1883 he took the degreee of M. A. and in 1887 M. B., with first-class honors in the University of Toronto. After graducating in medicine he was house Surgeon in the General Hospital, Toronto. in 1888 he was appointed on the Examining Board of the Ontario Medical Council and Lecturer in the Women's Medical College, and in 1890 Examiner in the Medical Faculty of the University of Toronto and in the University of Victoria College. he is a member of the Pathological Society of Toronto and other medical associations. Dr. Acheson is a staunch Presbyterian.

    George Acheson was born at Galt, Ontario on August 23, 1859, the son of Reverend Robert Acheson and Selena Shain. He attended the University of Toronto where he graduated with his B.A. (1880), M.A. (1883) and his medical degree in 1887. Dr. Acheson soon established himself at Trenton, Ontario and married Louisa Mary Phymister on December 3, 1890 at Westmount, Quebec. While at Trenton he served as a member of the Board of Examiners for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in the subjects of Chemistry and Toxicology and was a lecturer in Pathology and Histology at the Women's Medical College in Toronto. Dr. Acheson was a veteran of World War 1 and attained the rank of Brigadier-General. He practised some time at St. Martins, New Brunswick, but suffered from pernicious anaemia and was forced to retire. Dr. George Acheson returned to Ontario where he died at Hamilton on November 26, 1929, aged 70 years, 3 months and 3 days.

    Notes:

    Mr. Strang's successor as Minister of the United Presbyterian Church in Galt, was the Rev. Robert Acheson, of Galena, Illinois. He was inducted on the 17th June, 1858, and continued pastor of the Church until the year 1873-a period of 15 years. On his leaving his charge in Galt, Mr. Acheson was presented with a purse containing $500 and a most flattering address. His family also received presents. He is now pastor of the United Presbyterian Church at Stamford, near Niagara Falls.
