BAUMAN. - Enoch S. Bauman, eldest son of Martin H. and Rebecca (Shantz) Bauman, was born July 18, 1860; died Jan. 16, 1918; aged 57y. 5m. 29d. In 1883 he was married to Veronica Martin, which union was blessed with 11 sons and 2 daughters, of whom 3 sons have preceded him. For several months he had been failing in health, and on Nov. 21 an operation was attempted but not performed, because the number of cancers they found at once showed that it would be of no avail. From that time on he gradually failed until the end. He took it all very patiently, was completely resigned to the will of the Lord, and looked forward with joy to the glad reunion with the many loved ones gone before. Nearly 24 years ago he was ordained to the ministry, and filled his office faithfully, preaching the Word with great earnestness and power. He occupied a place that will be hard to fill, and a sorrowing congregation craves the prayers of the Church at large. A sorrowing companion, 8 sons, 2 daughters, step-mother, 5 brothers, 1 sister, with a large number of relatives and friends remain to mourn his departure. Funeral Jan. 19, 1918, conducted at the house and grave by Abram Gingerich, and at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church by Oscar Snider and Jonas Snider. Menno M. Brubacher

Bauman.- Veronica E. Bowman (nee Martin) was born May 18, 1863; died Aug. 27, 1922; aged 59 y. 3 m. 10 d. She was married to the late preacher Enoch S. Bauman with whom she lived 35 years, he having preceded her about 5 years. Strong in the faith, hopeful and cheerful, she was a great help to her husband in his responsible calling, and to all others with whom she came in contact. She united with the Mennonite Church early in life and remained true to the end leaving a bright hope and kind words of advice, for which we are thankful indeed as well as for her exemplary life, for she was a model of industry, sobriety, and separation from the world. She was the mother of 13 children, 8 sons and 2 daughters of whom survive, as well as 2 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services Sept. 1 at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church conducted by Bro. Abr. Gingerich from Jno. 19: 27 and Moses M. Brubacher from Jas. 4: 14.Transcriber's note: Bauman was also spelled as Bowman in the original.

Bauman - Martin H. Bauman was born Dec. 21, 1834; died Jan. 21, 1915; aged 80 y. 1 m. He was married to Rebecca Shantz. This union was blessed with 10 children, of whom 7 are still living; also 66 out of 80 grandchildren, and 7 of 8 great-grandchildren. He joined the Mennonite Church early in life and remained faithful to the end. He was one of those who could give good advice on many subjects, and his advice and example many do well to follow. Services and burial at Martin's Church near St. Jacob's Ont., Jan. 24, conducted by Ezra Martin and Tobias Martin.

Joseph Baumann, "the second son of Wendel Baumann and his wife Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796, came to Canada in 1819 and settled three miles north-west of the town of Waterloo, where he died December 21st, 1864. They had a family of seven children. "

Joseph Baumann, "son of Wendel and Mary (Huber) Baumann, grandson of Christian Baumann, and great grandson of the old progenitor, Wendel Baumann, was born in the Alleghany Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796. In May, 1819, he left his native home and came to Canada, arriving at old Abraham Erb's place in Waterloo, some time in the month of June. After being here for a few weeks he engaged himself to Abraham Erb to manufacture flour barrels, and other ware belonging to the coopering trade. He had his home with old Christian Schantz who resided on a large farm, about one and one-half miles south-east of Berlin, now in possession Aaron B. Shantz. Here he formed the acquaintance of Anna, the eldest daughter of Christian Shantz, whom he married September 23rd, 1821. She was born October 19th, 1801, and died October 19th, 1822, aged 21 years. This union, although of but thirteen months duration, was blessed with one child, a daughter named Anna, who was born July 16th, 1822, and died August 10th, 1822, aged 25 days. After the decease of his wife he still continued in the services of old Abraham Erb, and had his home with his father-in-law. Some time during the year 1824 he formed an acquaintance with Elizabeth, daughter of George and Barbara (Good) Hoffman. She was born February 12th, 1795. On February 20th, 1825 they were married. In the spring of the same year they moved on their farm, being composed of lot No. 27, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until their deaths. He died December 21st, 1864, and she died May 6th, 1879. Their family consists of seven children,"

Henry Shantz, "the second youngest son of Christian and Hannah (Paul) Shantz, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, November 3rd, 1804. In 1810 he came to Canada with his parents and spent his boyhood days on his father's farm on the west side of the Grand River at the Toll Bridge (Freeport). On September 23rd, 1828, he was married to Lydia, daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, August 2nd, 1810, and came to Canada when nine years old (1819). In 1829 they moved to North Dumfries Township, about two miles south of Roseville, where they resided until his death which took place October 4th, 1877. He was a minister of the Mennonite Church for a number of years and later on he was ordained bishop which position he filled with honor unto his end. He had a family of ten children"

Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.

She is quite well and seems to enjoy life, but of late, through a mild stroke of paralysis, she lost the use of her lower limbs.":

A-1-86 Probate of the Will of Daniel Martin, late of the Township of Woolwich, granted the Twenty sixth day of January, 1856, on the petition of Levi Martin and Joseph Martin, and Samuel Weber, the Executors named in said Will.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Daniel Martin, of the Township of Woolwich, Yeoman, being weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do make publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all writings in the nature of Last Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made. My Will is first, that my funeral charges and just debts be paid by my Executors. The residue of my Property I give, devise and dispose of as follows, to Wit:- I will that my beloved wife Veronica shall have and keep the Homestead, being part of Lot number Eighteen of the German Company Tract of Woolwich, containing One Hundred and Sixty two acres, more or less, until my son Daniel becomes of the age of Twenty one years, when he, said son Daniel is to have said Homestead, together with Four acres of Cedar Swamp, being part of lot Fifty three of said German Company Tract, to have and to hold the same forever (Excepting the hereinafter mentioned reservations) by paying Two Thousand Dollars ; namely One Thousand Dollars without Interest, in Two equal annual payments, which are to date and commence from the time he, said Daniel becomes of age, or take possession of said homestead, and which payments are to be made to my Executors. And the remaining One Thousand Dollars, the Interest thereof, he, my said son Daniel is to pay annually, in each and every year to my said wife during her natural lifetime; and immediately after her death, the said principal of One Thousand Dollars to be paid to my Executors, in Trust - however, should my said wife die before the expiration of the two years granted to my said son Daniel for the payment of the first mentioned One Thousand Dollars, and he desires a longer time for the payment of the last mentioned One Thousand Dollars, then in such case, he, my said son Daniel to pay the other One thousand Dollars in ten equal annual installments in the manner of the first, and commencing from the time the said first mentioned Thousand Dollars are fully paid up. And when my said son Daniel becomes of Age, my Executors shall sell by Public Auction, all my personal effects (Excepting such as my said Wife wishes to retain for her own use; my Executors shall at the same time, or at the time my said son Daniel takes possession of the homestead, build or cause to be built a comfortable dwelling separate, or attached to the one now occupied by us, on any part of the said farm and of such dimensions, together with Garden, and out houses, as my said wife may desire. And my said son David is yearly to deliver to my said wife, during her lifetime, one half of all the fruit which said Farm produces, and should she die before my son Dilman has fruit of his own, then said Daniel is to give him one twelfth of the Fruit, yearly produced on said farm; but not longer than fifteen years after said son Dilman becomes of the age of Twenty one years. Further my said son Daniel is yearly and every year, from the time he takes possession of said homestead - during the lifetime of my said wife, to give or cause to be given to her fifteen bushels of wheat, three hundred pounds of port, and one hundred pounds of beef, and all the firewood ready cut and fit for the stove, delivered to her door; also to keep two cows in pasture during the summer and feed them in the winter with and like his own. Further I give and devise to my son Joseph, to his own use forever, the South part of Lot Number Sixty five, of the German Company Tract of Woolwich, containing One Hundred and eighty two acres and a half ; by him the said Joseph paying to my Executors the sum of Two Hundred and Twenty one Dollars without Interest, in manner following, namely, in two equal annual payments, the first of such payments to be made on the first day of January 1861 - Should my said son Joseph stand in need of or desire it, my Executors are to lend or loan him about Five Hundred Dollars of my Estate for say Five Years, without Interest. My Executors are also to procure for my said sons Daniel, Joseph and Dilman, horses, cattle, farming implements, and other necessary things to enable them to commence farming, and charge these severally at the same rate as their Brother Levi is charged in a Book kept for that purpose. Further I will and bequeath unto my son-in-law Benjamin L. Eby, his heirs or assigns the North part of Lot number Sixty Five of the German Company Tract of Woolwich, containing One Hundred and Sixty acres, and my said Executors are to loan or lend said Benjamin L. Eby Two Hundred Dollars for five years without Interest. Further I will and bequeath unto my son Dilman, part of Lot number Forty six of the German Company Tract of Woolwich, containing One Hundred and Forty seven acres, more or less, and Four and a half acres of Cedar Swamp, being part of Lot number ninety six, of the Germany Company Tract, by him paying unto my Executors the sum of One Thousand Dollars without interest in ten equal annual Installments, to date and commencing when he the said Dilman come of the age of Twnety-one years.l Further I will and devise unto my daughters, Veronica, Mary and Judith each Four Hundred Dollars, to be paid them severally when they get married. I do hereby nominate and appoint my sons Levi Martin and Joseph Martin, and my son-in-law Samuel Weber, all of Woolwich, Executors of this my Last Will and Testament…And I further will that my said Executors shall have One Dollars and Twenty five cents per day each, while or whenever employed in business connected with my Estate.

They resided in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, where they followed farming. In their old age they lived in St. Jacobs, Ontario, where he died February 23rd, 1888. They had a family of thirteen children,.."

EBY.-On the 24th of March, in St. Jacobs, Waterloo county, Ontario, of old age, Peter Eby, aged 83 years. He was a member of the Mennonite church and was buried at Martin's Meeting-house on the 26 th., in the presence of many relatives and friends.
