On November 7th, 1843 he was married to Susannah, daughter of Abraham and Rachel (Dierstein) Clemens. She was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, August 23rd, 1821, and died February 19th, 1874. In 1877 he sold his farm to Mr. J. Rellinger and moved to the town of Waterloo where he died suddenly, February 27th, 1887. Their family consisted of nine children, three sons and six daughters."

An Old Resident Gone

The Berlin News of Tuesday had the following: - "Mr. Moses Bowman, of Waterloo, died yesterday at the age of 71. He was an old and highly esteemed citizen of the county, native in fact, and leaves a large family of grown up children. He was up to eight or ten years ago one of our largest and prosperous famers, when he sold out to spend the remainder of his days free form the toils and cares of business, residing in Waterloo. His death will be regretted by a large number of friends and acquaintances."

Baumann, "the eldest son of Christian and Magdalena (Weber) Baumann, and grandson of Peter Baumann who was the second son of Wendel Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, February 9th, 1793, and came to Canada with his parents in 1807. He was married to Nancy, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Erb) Schneider. She was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, June 4th, 1792, came to Canada with her parents in 1806, and died at Bloomingdale, May 11th, 1837. He died at Bloomingdale on his old farm, afterwards owned by his son Moses Baumann, July 8th, 1850. They had a family of eleven children, .."

Abraham S. Clemens, "the youngest son of Abraham and Mary (Steiner) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1790. On May 19, 1812, he was married to Rachel Dierstein who was born November 15th, 1791, and died December 3rd, 1864. In 1825 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, about one mile west of Breslau, on lot No. 123, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until 1837 when he purchased part of lot No. 111, about two miles south of Breslau. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place December 25, 1867. A good many years before his death he was ordained a deacon of the Mennonite Church, a position for which he was well qualified. Many a wholesome advice did he give to his congregation. His practice was to visit all the members of his field of labor twice a year and during such visits he would give words of cheer and comfort to many a weary pilgrim. He encouraged them to look to Christ in all their trials and troubles and reminded them of the many cheering promises given unto all who put their trust in him who died for all. To them was born a family of eight children"

OBITUARY FOR ABRAHAM S. CLEMMENS

Died on the first day of the recent Christmas holidays, that is on December 25th last, Abraham S. Clemmens died in Waterloo township, Waterloo County, Canada West of apoplexy. He was formerly of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1790 in Lower Salford township, in the aforementioned Montgomery county, and died at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 18 days. He entered the holy state of matrimony on May 19, 1812 with Rachel Derstein of Bucks county, and emigrated to Canada with his family in the year 1825. He was happily married for approximately 52 years, and a widower for 3 years and 22 days. He sired 8 children, 6 of whom are still living, namely 3 sons and 3 daughters.

His descendants, with 51 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, number consequently, 89 souls. On the day he died, he arose healthy and happy, sat down to breakfast after he had directed a loud and earnest prayer to the Giver of all good. He shoved aside a coffee cup which was sitting near him, and reached for the jug, to pour himself a drink of water, when suddenly, his hand fell. His son George, who had also just risen from the table, hurried over to help his father; his soul wanted to take leave of his body, and no human effort was of any help to him. He was speedily carried to his bed; but, he did not open his eyes again; his speech became weak and during the night that followed, approximately at 11.30 p.m., he slept away to his Lord. The deceased was generally respected and loved, and after he had accomplished much good, and ,we hope, useful things during his active life, he peacefully paid the debt of nature. For many years, he was the head of the Mennonite congregation there, and his eye was ever watchful over his flock. On the 29th instant, his body was taken to Cressman's Mennonite meeting-house, accompanied by a large number of friends and acquaintances, and committed to mother-earth, on which occasion the Rev. Hagey (at the deceased's house), and the Rev. Enoch Derstein (at the grave), spoke words of comfort and instruction to the crowd present, based on the text in the latter part of Verse 12, Chapter 4 of the Book of Amos: " Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, 0 Israel!"

Jacob (Yoch) Schneider, "the seventh member of his father's family, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 24th, 1764. In 1790 he was married to Mary, daughter of Christian and Mary (Scherch) Erb (No. 2777). She was born March 2nd, 1766 and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Bloomingdale, August 27th, 1835. In 1806 he, with his wife and family, his brother Christian and family, and others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County. Old Yoch, as he was generally called, settled on the east bank of the Grand River, near Bloomingdale, on the farms now possessed by Benjamin S. Snyder, Josiah S. Snyder, and Rev. Menno B. Bowman where he was engaged in farming and acquiring real estate so as to be able to give a large farm to each one of his children. His family consisted of ten children and were all married save one, and resided within the same neighborhood. He died February 6th, 1853,."

Jacob Snider: The Last Will and Testament of Jacob Snider, late of the Township of Waterloo.

… I, Jacob Snider, Sr. of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, being of sound and perfect mind and memory…I give and bequeath to all my sons and daughters, share and share alike, all my freehold and personal property of what kind and nature soever, except my farm, Levi Bechtel now living on for which I hold the deed for which is Lot No. 69 in Waterloo aforesaid, the said Levi Bechtel is to have the benefit of the said Lot during his natural life, then the said lot is to fall to his children, and all the share and shares arising out of my property after my decease which falls to my daughter Magdalene, wife of Levi Bechtel and will remain for the heirs of daughter Magdalene, except for the yearly interest, which Levi Bechtel was to have during his natural life. Should my said daughter Magdalena die, and Levi marry again, he should still have the benefit of the farm, but not the interest of any money out of the estate. .Further, I order and desire and it is my Will that the share that falls to 'my' daughter Elizabeth Snider shall remain on interest during her life, for which interest my daughter Elizabeth Snider shall be kept during her life with good and sufficient meal and drink, washing and lodging and other things necessary for her comfortable support during her life, and after her death, her share is to be divided amongst the other sons and daughters, except Magdalene, wife of Levi Bechtel, who is to have the interest or he as long as he does not marry again, and after hid decease all shall fall his children the heirs of my daughter Magdalene, the Lot No. 69, which I hold the deed will be seen by the receipts after my decease aled also notes signed by Levi Bechtel as well as by others so that all my estate will be made equally share and share alike as before mentioned, always to save her share for her and her children only the benefit of the farm during his natural life and the interest of all moneys till he married again, then that is to be stopped for his first children…And I do nominate, constitute and appoint in full power, as my own person, my son Christian J.
