Stauffer - Mary, daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Shiry-Betzner, was born Aug. 4, 1843; died June 23, 1924; aged 80 y. 10 m. 19 d. On May 23, 1865, she was married to Benjamin Stauffer. To them were born 5 sons and 3 daughters, 6 of whom survive: Norman, Isaac, Fred, Mrs. Noah Weber, Mrs. Jonah Baer, and Mrs. A. L. Shantz. Beside the children there remain to mourn 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 5 brothers (John, Isaac, Samuel, Moses, Aaron) and 3 sisters (Mrs. Noah Stauffer, Mrs. Aaron Cressman, and Mrs. Ephraim Cressman). Sister Stauffer made her peace with God early in life, joined the church of her choice, and remained a faithful, consistent member until God called her home. Funeral services were held June 25 from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Noah Weber, Waterloo, to the Kitchener Mennonite Church for service and burial in adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by Brethren Noah Hunsberger, Jonas Snider, and Oscar Burkholder.

Oldest Berlin Citizen is Dead
Jacob B. Betzner Passes Away on Monday in His 98th Year
Was Born Near Doon

Berlin's oldest citizen, Mr. Jacob B. Betzner, passed peacefully away on Monday afternoon at the advanced age of 97 years, 1 month and 26 days. The decease enjoyed good health almost until the end. Two months ago he became quite feeble but his mind was clear up to about two weeks ago when the infirmities of old age weakened his constitution until the Grim Reaper summoned him.

The late Jacob B. Betzner was one of the pioneer native-born residents of Waterloo County. He was the youngest child of John and Mary (Bechtel) Betzner, and was born September 5, 1818, on the first settlement in Waterloo township, east of Doon, now known as the old Betzner Homestead. He began farming when a young man on the Springbank farm, near Breslau, now owned by Mr. A. C. Hallman. He later moved to Port Elgin where he purchased the flour mills of that village which he operated for a number of years. He sold those mills and then bought the New Dundee mills which he run several years. He retired later and moved back to Breslau. Since the death of his second wife he has been living with his children in Berlin and vicinity.

On April 15th, 1842, he was married to Magdalena Scheirich, and the union was blessed with four children, viz: Mary (Mrs. Benj. Stauffer), High River, Alta.; Barbara (Mrs. (Rev) Noah Stauffer), Waterloo; John, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Isaac, New Hamburg. After her decease in 1849, the late Mr. Betzner married Maria Bretz and the union was blessed with six children, viz: Mrs. Aaron Cressman, Vineland, Ont.; Aaron, Berlin; Moses, on the Breslau Road; Samuel, Yukon Territory; Mrs. Eph. S. Cressman, Berlin. The youngest child, Mrs. Ozias Snyder, died at Breslau in 1893.

The late Mr. Betzner was industrious and successful in his various undertakings, whether as a farmer or a miller. He was of a retiring disposition, but has always been held in the highest esteem by all his acquaintances. During years of his retirement he kept himself informed regarding the events that were announced from time to time. He was particularly interested in the automobile enterprise and greatly enjoyed rides throughout the country. He was a Mennonite in religion and a Liberal in politics.

The funeral will take place from the residence of his son, Aaron Betzner, 148 Weber Street E., Berlin on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd at 1: 30 p.m., to the Breslau Mennonite Church for service and internment.

Betzner - Bro. Jacob B. Betzner was born Sept. 5, 1818, in one of the early settlements of Waterloo Co., Ont.; died at the home of his son, Bro. Aaron Betzner, in Berlin, Ont., Nov. 1, 1915; aged 97 y. 1 m. 26 d. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. On April 15, 1842, he was married to Magdalena Scheirick. This union was blessed with four children, all of whom are yet living. She died in 1849. On Sept. 28, 1851, he was married to Maria Bretz, which union was blessed with 6 children, all living except one. His second wife died in 1899. He leaves a posterity of 10 children, 9 of whom are living; 45 grandchildren, 42 whom are living; 53 great-grandchildren, of whom 7 died, and also 2 great-great-grandchildren. Bro. Betzner was a member of the Mennonite Church from his youth. The funeral was held on Nov. 3. Services at the house by Bro. Isaish Wismer and at the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by Bro. Jonas Snider. (Text, Dan. 12: 13) and Bro. Isiah Wismer. (Text, Job 19: 25). Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Historic Building:
The Betzner Farmstead, composed of a farmhouse, drive shed and cultural heritage landscape, is located at 437 Pioneer Tower Road, in the southeast end of the City of Kitchener. The two-storey farmhouse was designed in the Mennonite Georgian style by John Betzner, and the accessory drive shed was designed in the utilitarian and vernacular style typical of pioneer farmsteads. Both buildings were constructed in circa 1830.

"... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."

Samuel Betzner, "the old progenitor of this highly respectable family, was born near the little village of Merspurg, situated on Lake Constance, about eight miles north-east of the city of Constance in the kingdom of Wurtenburg, Germany, in 1738. His parental residence was a humble cottage situated about a mile from Merspurg, and his parents were plain, honest wage-earners, and members of the German Reformed Church. When Samuel was about three years of age he had the misfortune of losing his father, and in less than a year hereafter his mother died, thus leaving him an orphan at the age of four years. * A kind and tender-hearted neighbour in whose service the lad's parents had been for many years, being animated to sympathy for the poor orphan, adopted him as his own son. Being naturally of a bright mind, young Samuel availed himself of the opportunity thus afforded him and he soon became a favourite among his friends and neighbours. He had so well gained the love and esteem of his foster-parents that they had him appointed sole heir to all their large estate worth thousands of dollars. All went well until Samuel was about sixteen years of age, when an heir was born unto his foster-parents. After this young heir had made his appearance in the family, it became evident to Samuel that sooner or later his lot would prove to be something like young Ismael's, however he did not wait until the pitcher of water was handed to him, he left for America when seventeen years of age. He arrived at Philadelphia in 1755 and settled in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It is said that he made the journey from Philadelphia to Franklin County on foot and that he slept in barns or on straw in the fields whenever night overtook him.

Mr. Betzner was subjected to many severe trials, partly arising from the military operations then harassing the country and partly from his former co-religionists in forsaking the German Reformed Church and joining that of the River Brethren (Dunkards), but all these trials were endured with patience. He was of a cheerful disposition and engaging manners. In social conversation he was pleasingly instructive. His only aim in this life seems to have been to prepare to meet his God in the world to come. This good old man was married to Maria Detweiler who was born in 1744, and died near Blair, Ontario in 1806. In 1800 he and his wife, in company with John Christian Reichart, moved to Canada. Old Mr. Betzner settled on the Grand River, opposite Doon, his farm adjoining that of old Joseph Schörg. Here he resided until his death which took place in 1813. They had quite a family. We know of five children"

Mathias Scheirich, "the ancestor of the family, was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was born December 6th, 1751. In 1805 he emigrated to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, nearly two miles south of Berlin. His old homestead is now possessed by George Histand. He was married to Catharine Mooney who was born in 1762 and died December 10th, 1825. He died February 6th, 1835. They had a family of eight (maybe they had more than eight) children"

Michael Groh, "the third son of old Hannes and Magdalena (Baumann) Groh, was born in 1757. In 1779 he was married to Elizabeth Witmer. In 1804 he, in company with others, came to Canada with the object of making a thorough inspection of the nature of the country. So well was Mr. Groh pleased with the appearance of the country (then all in its primeval state) that he took up a claim between Preston and Hespeler. He cleared about six acres and made it ready for fall wheat. On this clearing he erected a small log cabin into which he purposed moving on his return, with family, from Pennsylvania. In August of the same year he returned to his parental home in Montgomery County. During the first week of September (1804) he, (bidding adieu to his parents, brothers, friends and relatives, and not thinking of this being their last time of meeting here on earth) in company with his wife and family, set out on the journey for their Canadian home. They came as far as Buffalo where they crossed the Niagara River and proceeded on their journey to Mr. Boyer's who resided near the river on the Canadian side, where Mr. Groh, the father of the family, took sick and, after a few weeks suffering, died. The wife and two sons, John and Jacob, and one or two daughters, proceeded on their journey to Waterloo while the eldest daughter, Barbara, remained with her father to nurse him during his illness, and after his recovery they were to follow the family, but the mother and family had no sooner arrived at their new home when word came that the father was dead. He died about September 20th, 1804. Their family consisted of seven children"
