  • Notes
    • MR. JAMES WARNOCK was one of the leading business men of the town of Galt A man of large intelligence and great enterprize. A man of principle and sterling integrity. A man whose word was his bond. A strong-minded man, strong at both poles in his loves and in his aversions. He was upright, honest, honorable a man to be relied on. His life was preeminently a business life. But passing beyond that into the sacred circle of the home, where the tender, sweet, fragrant graces grow, there he was most kind, loving, sympathetic He was a devoted husband and a loving father. One who was at rest in the bosom of his family, finding there the highest earthly satisfaction. He was a true, staunch friend. He had a high esteem of my predecessor, Mr. Bentley, and his friendship for him continued to the end. He had been bred up to a respect for God's house, and a reverence for His law, and he was constant in his attendance on the Sabbath services. He thought more and felt more of religion than he expressed in words. He belonged to the old school, who were reticent and who thought these things were not for public talk, but for private and personal enjoyment.

When his last sickness came, his faith was in the Only One who can send succor, and on Him he rested with child-like confidence. How thankful we should be that in our earthly extremity we can say:

" O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for time to come ; Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home."

Colvin & Fraser, Wholesale and Retail Hardware, Etc.

Their store is on Dickson street; warehouses No. 2 Hawthorn street ; 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Walnut street. This house is one of the oldest and most reliable in the trade west of Toronto. Fifty years ago Mr. James Warnock began or organized this business, continuing until 1881, when Mr. A. C. Fraser entered the firm. This partnership continued until 1887, when Mr. Warnock retired. Mr. Fraser continued the business when Mr. Colvin entered the firm, the business being removed to the present large premises. The firm make a specialty of heavy hardware, bar iron, steel and black-smiths' supplies, and carry a heavy stock in these lines. They are also heavy dealers in coal, wood, fire-brick and oils. Their coal houses have a capacity of some 15,000 tons. Mr. Fraser is a native of the Granite City, in Scotland, coming to Canada in 1863. Mr. Colvin is a native Canadian, born near Galt. Both gentlemen by virtue of their proud nationality are the material of which sterling men are made, rising from the ranks as they have to the proud position they hold, not only as business men, but in social circles as well. Mr. Fraser is chairman of the Board of Management of Knox church and Mr. Colvin is Secretary of the Board of Management of Central Presbyterian church.

      Messrs. James Warnock & Co
., Hardware and Coal Merchants, Main Street

A careful review of the extensive commercial interests of Galt reveals the fact that there exists a class of houses in every respect prepared to compete in the several lines they represent with rival establishments in any other city in the Dominion. Among such a foremost position must be ascribed to Messrs. James Warnock & Co., hardware merchants, Main Street. The business of this house was founded forty years ago, and has grown from small to very extensive proportions. The premises occupied in prosecution of the business consist of a three story and basement stone structure 22x125 feet in dimensions. Of the variety and character of the stock carried it would be impossible to speak too highly. It includes every description of domestic, British and foreign hardware, iron, steel, nails, lead, tin, cutlery, paints, cordage, etc., and carriage builders' supplies; and a full line of everything of this nature, of the best quality and most careful selection is here to be obtained. In addition to this business the firm are large wholesale and retail dealers in coal, having two extensive sheds covering half an acre of ground on Hawthorn Street. They give employment to fourteen hands, and use five teams in the prosecution of their business, which extends through town and country, over the western division of the Grand Trunk Railway and its branches, on Credit Valley from Toronto to Woodstock, and the Northern & North-Western and Midland Railways. The business is steadily increasing annually, and at the present writing is reported to be excellent. Both members of the firm, Mr. James Warnock and Mr. A.C. Fraser, are natives of Scotland and are active, energetic and enterprising business men, and are held in the highest esteem by the community. Mr. Warnock was a member of the Town Council for a great many years, and rendered valuable assistance in its deliberations.
