  • Notes
    • Physician, world champion canoeist, horseman, two time president and one of the original directors of the Galt Horse Show, veteran and enthusiastic sportsman, Dr. Harry Frederick MacKendrick was born in Galt on June 1, 1866. He was the youngest of five sons of James MacKendrick and Clara Crane. Dr. MacKendrick was educated at Galt's Central Public School and, for a short time, at William Tassie's Galt Grammar School, later the Galt Collegiate Institute. After leaving Tassie's school in 1881, following an altercation with the Head Master, Dr. MacKendrick served an apprenticeship as a fitter in a machine shop. He worked at the Goldie & McCulloch foundry for a few years before deciding, in 1888 at the age of twenty two, to study medicine. He first returned to the Galt Collegiate Institute to complete his high school education and matriculated ten months later in June 1889. In October the same year he enrolled at the University of Toronto Medical School and in May 1893 received his medical degree. He had worked as a student doctor under Dr. J. S. Wardlaw and established his own practice when he returned to Galt on May 18, 1893. Mr. MacKendrick started canoeing at the age of twelve or thirteen and in 1886 he won the U.S. singles canoe championship in a regatta held at the Thousand Islands near Clayton, New York. He added to this accomplishment by winning the Canadian singles canoe championship in 1888 in a meet held at Sturgeon Point. In 1890 Mr. MacKendrick, along with his father and two of his brothers William and John N. MacKendrick, went to New York to compete in the international canoe races off Long Island. Mr. MacKendrick won the world's single one mile canoe championship clipping sixteen seconds off the previous record. With his brother John, he also won the tandem one mile race. Dr. MacKendrick served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from the spring of 1915 to July 1918 rising to the rank of captain. He acted as chairman of the War Memorial Committee which erected the cenotaph in Queen's Square in 1930. In 1924 he retired from his medical practice and became the manager of Cruickston Stock Farm working for both Katherine Wilks and her heir Matthew Wilks Kiefer. He died at "Bromley Cottage", his home on Coronation Boulevard, on April 30, 1950. He is buried in Mount View Cemetery.
