  The below edited letter was written by Mrs. Alexander (Louisa) Smith to her mother Lucinda Morse of Alabama, New York. Material in brackets inserted by the author. West Montrose, [Ontario, Canada] April 8, 1858 Dear Mother- We received your kind letter about the 20th of February with gratitude and joy that you should be so kind to write again to us. As we had not answered yours and brother's letters of last winter which we received. I had made several attempts to answer but was always prevented by my work or some other hindrance. I had been anxious to hear from you all for William [brother of Louisa] wrote that you were all sick. We are glad to hear that you are better. We were at Preston [Ontario] to see Dr. Folsom [his wife was a sister of Louisa] and family a few weeks ago and they were in good health at that time. Mrs. Folsom wishes much to see you-your grandchildren Louisa Clemons and her husband were here the 27th of February. They were all well. They have three children living....... CAPTAIN THOMAS SMYTH.
