  • Notes
    • WEIDENHAMMER, FREDERICK J. was born in St. Clements on December 24, 1867, and died in Waterloo on December 31, 1921. He married Ottilia Conrad of Waterloo on February 28, 1906, and they had one daughter.

He attended the Elmira schools and the Berlin Model School and taught school for three years in Woolwich. He next went to the Normal School in Toronto and then taught in Elora, Dundas and either Thamesville of Kemptville. In 1896 he received his B. A. degree from the University of Toronto, and went to the West, On his return he taught at Leamington for five years and at Walkerton for one year. He then elected to study medicine, and graduated in 1905 from the University of Toronto.

He began in Hawkesville having bought Dr. More's practice, and remained there until February 1911 when he sold out to Dr. A. S. Thompson. While in Hawkesville he bought the telephone line between Elmira and Hawkesville, and ordered another line built from Hawkesville to Wallenstein.

His move in 1911 was mentioned in the Berliner Journal of February 8th.:

Dr. F. J. Weidenhammer who has for many years conducted a successful practice in Hawkesville, has purchased the residence of the late Dr. Armitage and will remove to Waterloo. We welcome Dr. Weidenhammer here and wish him success in our midst.

He had a thriving practice in Waterloo, and found time to take an active part on the public school board where he served for a number of years.

He died on December 31, 1921 at 54 of years of age, after an illness of about three years. He was survived by his widow and daughter.

He was relatively old - 38 years of age- when he graduated in medicine, and he had spent nearly as long a time teaching as he did practising. The extra stress, combined with his age may have precipitated intemperate habits. This appears to have been a factor in his early demise.
