    • KILLED AT THE PORTAGE

A Traveller Meets a Horrible Death While Jumping From a C. P.R. Train at Portage la Prairie.

The only thing to mar the enjoyment of the Queen's birthday festivities at Portage la Prairie yesterday was the untimely death of a young man who reached that place yesterday afternoon on the No. 2 train from the west, which ran into Portage la Prairie about 2.20 in the afternoon. From particulars obtained it, appears that as the train was pulling into the old station (which it now runs through and stops at the new one opposite that of the NI. & N. W. R) a young man thinking it that it was not going to stop at Portage, attempted to alight. The train was going at a good speed and he was on the front portion of the rear car. He made a spring for the platform and either missed his footing or held on to the car too long, for he was dragged between the car and the platform and instantly crushed to death. Provincial Constable Cox, of Portage la Prairie, was immediately informed of the occurrence and hastened to the C. P. R. station, where he took possession of the body. Upon searching the dead man he found a pocket book containing the name "William L. Le Kuntz, Berlin Ont." It is believed that he was a student of the Ontario Veterinary college, and when the body was seen by several residents of Portage la Prairie they gave the opinion that, he was a veterinary surgeon practicing at Delornine. He had a gold watch and chain on him but no money.

      HIS IDENTITY.
It is learned in the city that Mr. Kuntz is a veterinary surgeon who has been practicing in Boissevain.
