- Miss Elizabeth Fairgrieve Passes In 78th Year
The death occurred in Galt Hospital on Monday of Ayr's former librarian, Miss Elizabeth Fairgrieve, in her 78th year. She had been confined to hospital for three weeks as the result of a stroke. Born in Guelph, a daughter of the late Thomas Fairgrieve and Annie Hard, she removed to this village with her family as a young girl and had resided here the remainder of her life. Her father was appointed librarian in the Carnegie Public Library here, a position which he retained for many years. He was succeeded by Henry Griffin, who held the post for a short period. Miss Fairgrieve accepted the position a quarter of a century ago and retired on March 1 of this year due to ill health. During her 25 years of service, Miss Fairgrieve handled thousands of volumes and through her remarkable memory was able to discuss the contents of practically all of them with the many subscribers. She counted among her friends, children of two generations who came to respect her advice on matters of reading. Invariably, Miss Fairgrieve directed their attention to the wide variety of travel and educational books which she deemed suitable to the individual. She was a member of the former Stanley Street Presbyterian Church and later Knox United Church. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Annie Morrison, who made her home here with her sister until a recent illness when she went to the home of her son, George, in Galt. Also surviving are two brothers, William S. and Albert, in the West. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2.30 from the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor to the Ayr Cemetery.
